Montpelier VT – The Vermont Agency of Education announced the availability of summer meal sites for all children, 18 and under, through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). This federally funded program ensures that children across the state have access to nutritious meals throughout the summer. Meals are served at a wide range of locations including schools, parks, housing complexes, and libraries. Families can find information about open meal sites by:
- visiting fna.usda.gov/sfsp/sitefinder,
- visiting www.hungerfreevt.org/summer-meals, or
- calling the United Way resource hotline at 2-1-1,
“Access to nutritious foods is critical for child development during both the school year and the summer months,” said Secretary of Education Zoie Saunders. “Summer meal sponsors have worked hard to make meals available in every corner of the state. In summer 2025, Vermont served over 1.5 million meals at almost 300 sites across the state. Every family is encouraged to access this important resource to support their child’s growth and health all summer so they can return to school ready to learn.”
Many locations offer prepared meals for children to eat on site. These meal sites can also provide social and educational opportunities for children and their caregivers. Other sites offer rural non-congregate meals. This option allows for meals to be provided via “grab and go” or household delivery. Local site sponsors have the option to allow parents and caregivers to pick up meals on behalf of children, without the child present.
In addition to children 18 and under, persons over 18 years of age who are mentally or physically disabled and participate in a public or nonprofit private school program established for the mentally or physically disabled are also eligible to receive summer meals.

Parents can’t feed their kids?
Without means testing, this takes tax revenue from poor people to give food to wealthy kids. Regressive. Why not give EVERY US family SNAP EBT cards? Same thing, and it destroys public support for programs created under the pretense of helping the poor — who are now taxed to feed the rich. Which is worse, the oligarchy or this failed bureaucracy? My parents fed me, and I fed my kids, and we were low income. Now taxes or pushing us into greater poverty as we approach a retirement in which we don’t want to burden our children.
Don’t these families already get WIC and EBT? Just curious…

I’m sick of supporting people who just breed in order to get handouts. More virtue signalling from the party with no virtue. How do you think these kids will be raised? Oh, I know, to vote for the party that gives them handouts so they can sit around high in the lobbies of our hotels.
The overall public education system in Vermont has failed miserably in their primary function so they try to justify our huge property taxes and make up for it by filling in with what parents should be providing during the summer. Vermont has other food subsidy programs available that parents in need can avail themselves of, and show their kids that they are responsible providers by cooking for them. Providing meals during school is entirely appropriate, but extending catered meal service during school vacation is over-the-top nanny government meant to instill a sense of dependency.
