By Paul Bean
I attended the Trump rally on Sunday at Madison Square Garden in New York City and I am at a loss for words.
But I’m a reporter, so here goes…..
Watching how the mainstream media has reported on the event has been genuinely eye opening and sad. MSNBC compared it to a Nazi rally hosted there in the 1930s, the New York Times calling it “A Closing Carnival of Grievances and Racism, CNN saying “Trump loyalists spew racist, vulgar attacks at Harris and Democrats at New York City rally, and CBS writing “Trump rally at Madison Square Garden features offensive, crude commentary,” which is if anything the most accurate but still false.
Having never been to a Trump rally (nor any kind of major political rally) I did not really know what to expect. On Sunday Oct 27, I was up at 5 am and on the road. On my way I listened to Donald Trump on Joe Rogan which was of course very “on theme” before seeing MAGA in person. Between the Rogan interview and the MAGA rally my opinion of Trump and his supporters have changed immensely.
As a teen, I “hated” Trump, but had no idea what I was talking about. It was all just based on what pretty much everyone else around me was saying, what I was being taught in Vermont public schools and what I saw on the TV. What I had in my mind about him and his supporters is that they were brash, rude, racist, inflammatory person, and I was surprised by how much I was still holding on to those sentiments about him prior to attending this rally. My perspective of Trump and MAGA was still today slightly poisoned by a media narrative that we have been conditioned by for the past 10 years.
Trump, and his supporters, are not racist. In fact they are some of the least racist people on the planet. “I have never felt more welcomed in my life,” said Mohit, an Indian born gentleman who I met while waiting in line. “Everything the media says about Trump and his supporters being racist is a complete lie. Look around us right now, there are people of all walks of life.”

Looking around the crowd we saw all kinds of Trump supporters. I spoke with Chinese Catholics that love Trump. I chatted with black men from the Bronx who support him and are actively hoping he will flip NY. Despite the endless fake news claims that “Trump is Hitler” I saw literally thousands of Jewish people and many of them wearing “Jewish voices for Trump” merch.
For even me, these sights are eye opening.
While the media is literally freaking out about a single comment Tony Hinchcliffe made, he is a comedian and made many more jokes like it. Maybe instead of watching a single clip of the event, go and watch everything he said… And notice the media doesn’t talk about any of the other speakers that were in attendance, just the one white dude who made a funny joke.
Speakers included a diverse mix of races including, former Presidential candidate and Indian American, Vivek Ramaswamy, former Congresswoman and Hawaiian, Tulsi Gabbard, and Death Row records CEO Micheal Harris, who is black.
Look I don’t mean to make this a game of naming off races, but it needs to be pointed out just how diverse the group of speakers were as well as the supporters there in NYC. This cast of characters was not some forced diversity and equity mandate either, it was a serendipitous grouping that was created naturally and you could tell. The speaker’s list was a star studded cast. Some people I admire greatly, Bobby Kennedy Jr, Elon Musk, Tucker Carlson, Dana White, Rudi Guliani, and JD Vance.
“I saw the Grateful Dead in this arena in 1987, I was seated right there…how weird,” said Tucker Carlson as he took the stage at MSG. “It’s such an honor to be here, and it’s wild. Just another day following Bobby Kennedy Jr at a Donald Trump rally in Madison Square Garden..HAHAH I mean what? It’s totally normal. Liz Cheney’s out there with Kamala Harris and there’s Bobby Kennedy calling to protect women’s sports at a Trump rally. It’s a realignment.”

That is exactly what it is. A realignment of truth, diversity, merit, and of the Republican party as a whole. Today’s democratic party is the party of hate, war, big pharma, corporations, corporate media, manufactured division, and incompetence. It is a party that is based around lies. The Democratic party literally does not even have a real platform this year, it is all “orange man=bad.”
Admittedly, I did not make it into the arena. We were literally at the gate when they cut off attendance. Only about 20,000 people got in, meanwhile around 200,000 people rallied around the building. While I was a little upset, it didn’t really matter. From where we were we could hear clearly the crowd inside and we could hear the speakers outside the arena. It was a site to see outside the arena, mind you. There were way more people outside. The streets of New York City flooded with red MAGA hats and shouts of USA, USA, USA echoed off the skyline around us.
The talk the whole time was about the potential of New York potentially flipping for Trump. “I had a friend of mine, a smart guy. He’s a billionaire, texted me this morning,” Vivek Ramaswamy said during the rally. “And he said, ‘Why the hell are you guys wasting your time in New York City instead of going to a swing state?’ You want to know what I told him? I said, ‘Welcome to 2024. New York is a swing state’.”
While winning New York might be far fetched for some to believe, the last Republican President to win in NY was Ronald Reagan, who was also the most recent republican nominee to spend a significant amount of time campaigning in New York City.
With one week to go in this election season, I am thankful I was able to make it to a rally in New York City in Trump’s hometown and to see him and his creation of MAGA in the city he came from. Trump has been very clear, win or lose, this is it. This was like seeing Derek Jeter in his final game at Yankee Stadium….like Sinatra’s final performance in NYC. While I didn’t make it actually inside the building, we were there, we were part of it, and it was nothing short of historic.

Thank you for this great article. I wish some of “those folks” would be open- minded enough to read it.
Good article and reading from a grass roots person. Knowing the people that have been elected in NY & NYC, the mentality and their records, it’s difficult to understand how the NY’s became so Liberal. Knowing a event of that size in a Liberal state is mindboggling. This article gave a different perspective. Seen the MSG event on TV and video on YouTube was fortunate, great speakers all. Then to see the Liberal media bash it makes you wonder just what do they want America to become. Hope and trust the populaces around the country also has similar experiences of positivity. Goodness and greatness in my opinion overcomes evil and negativity. with time being a factor.
I envy you. The Andersons are originally from the New York area/North Jersey, and in 2016 I felt like “my” team won. Spirits seem high around here as well. Got my champagne and my Gershwin CD ready to play on Tuesday night, just like last time.
A TOAST
By Ellin Anderson
The wineglass elm
Of storied praise
That graced the realm
Of kinder days,
And rose to pledge
An endless toast
At empire’s edge,
Is now a ghost.
But on a day
Before the fall,
I made my way
Past wood and wall,
And from the grass
The pasture wore,
That graceful wineglass
Rose once more.
Vines wrapped the tree
As round a sheaf,
Quite prettily,
With flaming leaf,
And pendant from
Its tapered shape,
Hung hue of plum:
The ripened grape.
Could there be mist
In that warm shade?
Pale vapors kissed
A promenade
Of stateliness
In summer white
Where numberless
As stars at night
Were all the stitches,
Ruffles, pearls —
The handmade riches
Countless girls
Had sewn, by candles,
Patiently,
For rituals
Of courtesy.
As fine as ever,
Nod and bow,
The graces never
Thought of now:
Men tipped straw hats,
And ladies smiled.
White canes, white spats;
Each man, and child
And woman seemed
To walk in bliss;
No dream I’d dreamed
Was quite like this.
What gods held sway
With canes and fans
To rule the day?
Americans
Who lightly stepped,
And softly spoke
Through vigils kept
For modern folk
By one terrific
President:
He shook a stick
And bullies bent
Like feeble reeds
Before a gale.
Through his brave deeds,
We would prevail:
A Teddy bear
For all to love.
Though he was fair,
He was no dove,
And if he rode
A little rough,
When might’s bestowed,
You must be tough.
The day was late,
The light soon killed.
Above the gate,
The sky was filled
With sunset’s tranquil
Potency
Against the chill
Come over me.
But like a star,
Some hope still burned
As if T. R.
Had just returned:
A strong foundation,
Now as then,
To make our nation
Great again.
When my husband and I attended a Trump rally in Manchester, NH, a few years ago, it was life-changing for both of us. We left our home at the crack of dawn to arrive in Manchester at 8 in the morning. (There were some folks there who had camped out at the door the night before!) We had a 12-hour wait and it was so much fun! The crowd outside was diverse in age, economic class, and ethnicity, and everyone was respectful and the vibe was positive and happy – yes, a love fest! Once inside to see and hear Donald Trump speak — it was amazing — the positive energy coming from our diverse group of people, from all walks of life, affirming the USA and reacting to the positive message President Trump was speaking about. It was so uplifting, it gave us hope, and it affirmed the decent goodness of the USA at its best.
I feel sorry for those with TDS who have bought into lies, cling to delusions, and have darkened their minds and hardened their hearts to truth and goodness.
I went to the same rally that ‘cpage’ did (winter weather, early 2020 )and it was SO energizing! Hard to explain the excitement of everyone being happy, friendly, dancing, singing and no negativity at all – no hecklers. We had to leave water bottles and some bags and jackets outside, but they were all there when the rally was over. No theft!! That is what MAGA is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have written hundreds of reports throughout my career. We can’t ever judge our own work because we are biased toward yourselves. I’ve noticed lately that Paul Bean is a good writer. The best way for writers to get their message heard is to use plain language and words we all understand. This article was exactly that.
The other element for good writing is to tell the truth. With the truth you never have to look over your shoulder to see who’s coming after you. A lie has to be supported by other lies, but the truth stands alone. We have so many people who refuse to see the truth even when it’s staring them in the face.
Those people who refuse to see the real Trump and believe the manufactured media lies will suffer in the end. There are no people as blind as those who refuse to see. I hope Paul’s simple but descriptive words reach some of those people. Hate will never win, good will never die and the truth will always reveal itself. Miserable people will remain miserable.
Thank you, Paul, for the truth. The real America is at the turning point. Trump will win and Vermont can go to hell right where it’s headed.
Speaking of good writing. The spaces in my comment are from the site not my writing. There’s no way to edit once it’s gone and it looked fine when sent.
The left is full of angry people who think they are superior to us knuckle-dragging conservatives, but sadly, their anger makes them easy to lead (or mislead). No doubt, a liberal decided that since Hitler didn’t drink, smoke, or eat meat, Trump must be just like that lunatic. And its an easy caricature for liberals to digest and regurgitate so that they can make more little demonrats, who like to feel superior to conservative values they too deem to be Nazi-like.
But the wise man Tim Walz drew a “parallel” between the Trump rally and one that took place there about 90 years ago, that had nothing to do with a presidential election…
Taking the man out of the equation – the message is clear – Americans are showing up, in large numbers, to say “enough is enough.” The proof being that there are liberals, in secret, confessing they will vote for Trump. Why? As one party-line or die person stated, they run a business and they don’t want to lose their business. They continue to post the rhetoric, carry the water, but their ballot will speak otherwise.
Even the Left knows how dire the situation is, what is at stake, what they stand to lose and have all ready lost. Saving face with friends, clients, family and associates shows they live in fear of blowback and being cancelled. Very sad to live a disengenuous life, yet many do and it is said 4-6% are lost for good and are true nihilists.
Great reporting Paul and so glad that you made the trip. When you told me that was your plan I was more than a little jealous because I have been to a couple rallies. They really are amazing. I was thinking of you and wondering if you were there as I watched on TV. It would have been nice to have gotten inside but being there outside with 80k like-minded patriots is something you will never forget. I am glad that you made it and shared the experience with your readers. Now that you have seen the bright lights of MAGA SQUARE GARDEN their is probably little chance that you will hang with me at Dan and Whit’s anymore.
Thank you for your article.
Just one comment: If MSG. Rally was a love fest, we are all astronauts.
