Teen, 16, dies when car hits tree

A 16-year-old boy died Friday afternoon, May 8 after the Volkswagen Passat he was driving crashed into a tree on Creek Road in Clarendon, according to the Vermont State Police.

Police said the the driver, identified as Jacob Smith of Proctor, was traveling south on Creek Road when he failed to maintain his lane of travel. The vehicle left the east side of the roadway and struck a tree head-on. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

Road conditions were dry and normal. Smith was wearing a seat belt. The crash remains under investigation.
