Swastikas spray painted at pro-BLM Alexander Twilight museum

By Guy Page

Police are investigating the weekend spraypainting of swastikas and anti-semitic remarks at the Old Stone House Museum and Historic Village, a not-for-profit dedicated to the memory of anti-slavery leader Alexander Twilight and to the values of Black Lives Matter.

Authorities say they were notified of a vandalism that took place at the Old Stone House Observation Tower on Hinman Settler Road in the Northeast Kingdom town of Brownington at around 9:45 a.m. Swastikas and antisemitic remarks were painted on the tower with orange spray paint.

This offense – termed “ Vandalism/Hate Motivated Crimes” by state police – is believed to have occurred between 7 PM Saturday night and 9:45 AM Sunday.

Over Labor Day, the observation tower – up the hill from the imposing, original four-story “Athenian Hall” built by Twilight now known as the Old Stone House – was the scene of a public music and dining event that featured a ‘star-gazing’ astronomy viewing led by Vermont Rep. Bobby Farlice-Rubio, a bi-racial Democrat from Barnet who once taught astronomy at the Fairbanks Museum.

In 2020, the museum trustees issued a statement affirming its solidarity with Black Lives Matters: “As an institution committed to celebrating the life and legacy of Alexander Lucius Twilight, the Staff and Board of the Old Stone House Museum stands in solidarity with the recent Black Lives Matter protests. We believe systemic racism, built on the backs of each succeeding generation of African Americans, has no place in our society. To this end, we plan programs and exhibits on our campus and online that underline not just how much black lives matter now but how much they have always mattered. At the core of our institution surges a tide to reverse societal racism.”

Born September 23, 1795, Twilight led a life devoted to education and faith. As the first African American to gain a college degree in the United States (from Middlebury College in 1823), “his often-noted strong will and dynamic leadership made Historic Brownington Village what it is today,” the museum website says.

In 1829, he was hired to be headmaster of the Orleans County Grammar School and was minister of the Brownington Congregational Church. Under his leadership, the Orleans County Grammar School thrived as a co-educational institution attracting boys and girls from throughout New England and Southern Canada who came from as far away as Boston and Montreal. Between 1833 and 1836 Twilight designed and led the construction of the four-story granite dormitory he called Athenian Hall—now our Old Stone House Museum.

Twilight became the first African American to serve in the state legislature in 1836  after his election to the Vermont House of Representatives.

Twilight began his life indentured at a neighboring farm at the age of eight. He chose a path of education, while still performing farm labor, by reading and studying mathematics at Randolph Orange County Grammar School before continuing to Middlebury for a college degree.

  1. Likely yet another lame set-up by Vermont Democrats & their “socialist” & “progressive” buddies (aka: ACTUAL Nazis and totalitarian groupies) attempting to make it appear as though true Americans who support Trump, as opposed to the D.C. swamp rats, are a “danger” to the nation. Good thing we’re getting close to Halloween….BOO, DemocRATS!

By the way, exactly what are the “values” of BLM? As I want to be clear, I surmise that they are stealing millions of dollars in donations to help defund the police & cause over 2 BILLION in damages to federal & private property — and then buying multi-million dollar homes for themselves with the $?

Any police with information that may assist ME, is asked to call MY home.

    • How could you say such things about Antifa/BLM? They also ruined countless lives by destroying mostly Black owned small businesses such as that of Flora Westbrooks in Minneapolis. You forgot about that. I’m trying to be witty. The point is that it’s even worse than is realized by many people.
I also surmise that they very well may have staged the incident.

  2. Black Lives Matter is a response to 400 years of slavery, racism, lynchings, discrimination in housing, redlining, gerrymanders to negate votes. With the advent of the cell phone camera it is easy to find, on line, scores of black homicides committed by police forces, beatings, false imprisonments and torture every year.
The ‘defund the police’ meme has been twisted by racists. What is asked is for the re-allocation of funds from police repression to funding social and mental health workers to handle situations that result in unnecessary shootings. Like the obviously pregnant black women who, hands raised, was shot because she would/could not lay face down on the ground. Or the black man dragged behind a pickup to his gruesome death. JUST LOOK.
It is very tiresome, and a political ploy of party dogma over a sense of morality, ethics, to yell “Black Flag’ rather than cleaning your own house. nazis in uniform carrying torches marched in Charlottesville chanting hatred against Jewish people (trump’s “good people”). American nazis marched in Times Square before we entered the WWII, in support of hitler. Conservatives kept America from saving Jews, gypsies, and others from the ovens. But of course, knowing history and understanding how we got to where we might hurt feelings. Never mind the feelings of those persecuted.

    • You are a prime example of how many people have been taken the the BLM organization. As they like to say in public schools “Open your mind and heart.” Yes, I am being sarcastic.

The founder of a Black Lives Matter chapter in Minnesota said he quit after learning the “ugly truth” about the activist group’s priorities.”

“In 2015, I was the founder of Black Lives Matter in St. Paul,” Rashad Turner, the president and executive director of Minnesota Parent Union, said in a YouTube video called “the truth revealed about BLM.”

“I believed the organization stood for exactly what the name implies — black lives do matter,” he said in the video for TakeCharge Minnesota, a group opposing the idea that systemic racism is to blame for problems in US society.

“However, after a year on the inside, I learned they had little concern for rebuilding black families,” he insisted.

He said BLM “cared even less about improving the quality of education for students in Minneapolis,” adding it was “made clear when they publicly denounced charter schools alongside the teachers’ union.”

“I resigned from Black Lives Matter after a year and a half. But I didn’t quit working to improve black lives and access to a great education,” he said.

Turner said he first started the local BLM chapter under the assumption the group would want to fight for black people from troubled backgrounds to get educated and find success, just like he had.

“When I was 2 years old, my father was shot and killed. My mother wasn’t able to take care of me, so I was raised by my grandparents,” he said, detailing how he went on to become the first person in his family to get a degree, going on to get a master’s degree in education.

“I am living proof that no matter your start in life, quality education is a pathway to success,” he said.

Resigning after realizing that BLM would not help him gain “the same success for our children and our communities,” he now leads Minnesota Parent Union, which aims to bring parents and educators together.

His video appeared on the YouTube channel for TakeCharge Minnesota, which calls itself a “new organization committed to countering the prevailing narrative … that America is structured to undermine the lives of black Americans.”

“We acknowledge that racist people exist in the country, but explicitly reject the notion that the United States of America is a racist country. This is a subtle, but significant difference!” the group says in its objectives.

“We also denounce the idea that the country is guilty of systemic racism, white privilege and abhor the concept of identity politics and the promotion of victimhood in minority communities,” the group says.

Instead, its objective is “to inspire and educate the black community and other minority groups in the Twin Cities to take charge of their own lives, the lives of the families and communities as citizens fully granted to them in the Constitution.”

    • If only half of what you said was true it woukd be a tragedy. However, having studied this in depth here are where your arguments fall short:

      1) Slavery has existed throughout history on every continent, especially Africa. Africans created their own slave trade, exploited by the rest of the world. 9 of the 13 colonies abolished slavery by the drafting of the Constitution. Vermont was the first. White, male, Christians led the charge to end it in the UK and here. White, male Christians died by the thousands to end it in the 1860s.

      2) The largest contributor to the scores of black homicides are black men, most of them fatherless. Not racism nor cops. Chicago alone dwarfs the number of homicides by police in one weekend alone.

      3) Social workers are unfit to solve the violent crime issue. Carceral remediation barely works. Keeping the black family together would flip the script over night. Fund that BLM. They won’t…why?

      4) They state on their websitw they want to abolish the nuclear family. This is about as anti-black as you can get. That and, they are openly Marxist, founded by lesbians martied to trans women which explains the tens of millions they donated to trans issues rather than black communities – explaining the comment below from BLM leader who quit from disenchantment.

      5) The Nazis in Charlottesville were also at Jan 6. They are Ukranian and American. Also funded by the Biden admin.

      6) White, male Christians tookdown Hitler and died by the thousands as well. Hitler was an Aryan socialist who fused Marx and Darwin.

      You don’t know your history.

Here is some reading to help you understand why this is considered to likely be another fake hate crime:

      • Aaron Warner, it might be a mistake to believe that these people actually believe their own false propaganda.

    • RETIRED NURSE, whoever, whatever, you actually are: You repeat the same tired Left fas**st cliches’. The lives of Black people, and others, have improved in this country. Dr. Thomas Sowell has outlined how supposedly benign programs have actually regressed the progress of disadvantaged people, especially people of color. Check statistics on Black on Black crime and what is happening in Burlington since drug gangs have come in from Mass.
“Conservatives” vary all over the place. It is stereotyping, bigotry, to lump them together. In fact, it was Roosevelt, a Democrat, who failed to interfere when millions of Jews, Gypsies, etc. were being massacred. Just assuming a label, Liberal, Radical, Conservative, etc., for yourself or for others, is, I repeat, stereotyping, bigotry.
Furthermore, as obviously “neurodiverse”, with “invisible disability”, I myself have experienced discrimination that has crushed my life, and is currently taking it. Literally. This isn’t the fault of the “system”. It is the result of individualized bigotries and corruption. Had I been a member of an acknowledged minority, I might have done better. Blaming everything on cliched’ scenarios is false propaganda.

    • Crown colonizers called my elders “Dirty Irish” “Mics” and segregated them due to their religous beliefs. If only the Irish Americans had the notion to organize and grift the populous so we too can purchase multiple mansions in Los Angeles and money launder the rest to friends and relatives. Oh well, I guess my feelings don’t matter, but if I was cut a check, say for six figures, I could feel better.

      • Italians too – And what about women? Though we now cease to exist within the warped minds of democrat psychopaths, we were denied equal pay, refused entrance to higher education, lawfully beaten to instill “discipline” & denied legal ability to own property or even rights to the children we bore. Native Americans were stripped of their language & culture and forcibly placed on reservations. Japanese Americans, Jews, Catholics…the list is long for those who endured persecution and inhumane living conditions here, there, and everywhere. But most groups sought to overcome adversity and fought to live the American dream.

    • Furthermore, “Retired Nurse” who hides behind a pseudonym, it hasn’t been 400 years, liar. Policies have steadily changed. There have been countless billions spent on programs. I repeat, Dr. Thomas Sowell, who FREW UP IN HARLEM, outlined how much of this effort succeeded only in stunting Black prosperity and progress.

  3. Twilight’s father was Mulatto according to the census. his mother not black. So Twilight was at most, 1/4 black.
