The South Burlington City Council has approved new measures aimed at public drinking, drug paraphernalia and electric motorcycles while adding a social-services caseworker to the police department, according to a Sept. 9 report by WCAX.

The council voted Tuesday to update city ordinances to prohibit drinking alcohol in public and standing on traffic islands. Certain electric motorcycles, or e-motos, also will be prohibited on recreation paths and sidewalks.

The new rules also ban disposal of drug paraphernalia in places where children tend to gather, including parks and areas near schools, WCAX reported.

Councilors also approved adding a Howard Center caseworker to the South Burlington Police Department. The caseworker will help connect people who violate city ordinances with services intended to address what officials describe as “unmet social needs.”

The measures come as communities across Chittenden County deal with concerns involving drug use, homelessness and public safety.

Councilors also discussed, but took no action on, Burlington’s proposal for a 100-bed low-barrier homeless shelter on Williston Road.

According to WCAX, councilors expressed support for the idea of providing more shelter space but want to determine whether a 100-bed facility is the right size and whether the proposed location is appropriate.

The proposed shelter has drawn interest in South Burlington because Williston Road is a major commercial corridor connecting the two cities.
