Segregation, not talent, prevents women from playing big league baseball, state-paid women’s advocate tells Legislature

State of Vermont women’s advocates claims women can throw baseballs as fast as men

By Guy Page

Vermont’s chief advocate for women testified to the Legislature yesterday that women can throw baseballs as fast as men and that only segregation is keeping them out of the Big Leagues.

During the same testimony, Carrie Brown, Executive Director of the Vermont Commission on Women, also declined to answer the question “what is a woman?” when asked by a legislator.

The exchange took place Tuesday, April 21 during a House Judiciary hearing on PR4, the proposed constitutional amendment that would add gender orientation and nation of origin to the list of protected classes of people under the Vermont Constitution. If approved by the Legislature, the proposed amendment will go to voters in November.

For the record, the fastest softball pitch by a woman is 79 MPH. An excellent major league fastball travels at 95-100 MPH. There are no extensive statistics on fastest hardball pitch by a woman, although the Guinness Book of World Records states that Lauren Boden threw 69 MPH in 2013. An online news report claims that Olivia Pichardo, then 17, threw 82 MPH in 2021. Women are active in professional baseball as umpires, coaches, trainers, and front office personnel.

The following transcript was taken from Golden Dome VT, the AI-powered reporter of all Vermont Legislature committee hearings:

Rep. Tom Oliver, R-Sheldon: How do you feel about males competing in women’s sports?

Carrie Brown (Executive Director, Vermont Commission on Women): Well, I mean, I think if you really want my honest answer as a parent of kids and who play sports, I would much rather see a world where sports were not necessarily segregated by gender, but by ability. So I know we don’t live in that world, but I would be a lot happier about that. I know that there are women who could pitch a baseball fast enough to be able to be a pitcher in MLB, and it would be great if there were no segregation that way.

Oliver: You said pitch in baseball fast enough to pitch in the MLB?

Brown: I’m sure of it. I could be wrong, but I believe it.

Zachary Harvey, R-Castleton:  I appreciate that. I have one more to say. How would you define a woman?

Brown: I’m not gonna answer that question. Sorry.

Harvey: Why?

Brown:  I’m not gonna answer that question.

Harvey: It seems to me that the head of the Vermont Women’s Alliance [sic] should be able to answer that.

Brown: I’m not gonna answer that question.

Harvey: Okay. I think the silence is deafening. I would just say that.

Martin LaLonde (Chair): Thank you very much, Cari. Appreciate you being here. And we’ll go to Arnold Thomas next……

According to her VCW bio, Brown served two terms as a VCW commissioner before joining the staff in 2012. She has worked as the Director of Girls’ Programs for Vermont Works for Women, a non-profit organization supporting education, training and careers in non-traditional fields for women and girls, and directed the Women in Technology Project, a national award–winning summer technology camp for girls at Vermont Technical College. She has served on the boards of Northern New England Tradeswomen, Turtle Island Children’s Center, the New England Association for Cooperative Education and Field Experience, and the Norwich University Alumni Association. Cary received her bachelor’s degree from Haverford College, and a Masters of Public Administration degree from Norwich University. She lives in Montpelier with her family, where she is a Justice of the Peace and also serves on the Montpelier City Council. According to a State of Vermont website, Brown earns $110,448 per year.

  1. Great question Zachary, this theme is going to be the way the Radical Left is going to continue to fight for biological men in woman’s NCAA and other young persons sports

    • Maybe she isn’t Roberts opponent. Maybe his comment was simply made in response to Carries ridiculous statement about women throwing a baseball as fast as men. It is never wise to talk about something that you know nothing about. Roberts word is perfect. I worked with Carrie many years ago and like her and respect her. But Carrie should have done some research to learn how a Jugs Gun works.

  2. It’s delusional to claim that women can pitch as fast as men, but a different question emerges when the issue is whether trans women (i.e, biological males pretending to be women) can pitch as fast as real men. I suppose some can, but should trans women be allowed to compete in women’s sports? Heck no!

  3. Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet has definitely lost something off his trademark fastball. Maybe owner John Henry, with his Quechee ties to Vermont, can persuade Ms. Brown to find the team a female fastballer to replace him. Heck, the Green Monster is a solid 310 feet away, and as long as Bucky Dent isn’t in the batter’s box, there shouldn’t be anything to fear with a new pitching recruit from Montpelier on the mound at Fenway.

    • That is a great idea Gary. Google says Garretts fast ball averages 96-99 during starts and 100-102 as a reliever. Based on the last 2 starts his fastball must have slowed down all the way to around 95. Heck, my granddaughter plays softball in high school. She said they lost a game last week and the other teams pitcher threw a no hitter. She said she must have had a 100 mph fastball. Red Sox, send a scout.

  4. Such ABSURD statements, should and does, remove ALL of that persons credibility. This is embarrassing.

    • As a woman, which is defined as an adult human female, I wholeheartedly agree. Men should not invade women’s spaces and women should not invade men’s spaces. We can thank toxic feminism.

  5. Each MLB team is affiliated with four primary, full-season minor league teams
    (Triple-A, Double-A, High-A, and Single-A).
In addition to these four, franchises typically operate complex league teams (Rookie level) – so to Ms Brown’s point, it might be possible for a woman to pitch competitively for a major league team – in the minors.

As an executive director earning $110,448 in 2025 (according to public payroll data from Vermont Commission on Women) ya think she might have taken a stab at answering Mr. Harvey’s question. Over the full recorded period from 2015 to 2025, her salary increased by approximately 40% ($31,624)! Her compensation was 33% higher than the average salary at Vermont Commission on Women and 35% higher than the average salary in the broader State employer category!

As a paid commentator at VT Public Radio, one would think she might be able to give testimony as to what defines a woman.

She works for Vermont Commission on Women yet stonewalls an elected representative of the people …. what a cheap poke in the eye.
    Wannabe academic elitist?

  6. How can she call it Vermont Commission on Women? Shouldn’t it be changed to Vermont Commission on We Don’t Know! Or, the Vermont Commission of the Unknown?

  7. “I’m sure of it. I could be wrong, but I believe it.”

Women can play in the NHL: “I’m sure of it. I could be wrong, but I believe it.”

Men can have babies: “I’m sure of it. I could be wrong, but I believe it.”

Anthropomorphic CO2 is killing the planet: “I’m sure of it. I could be wrong, but I believe it.”

Land owners must be stopped from destroying wildlife corridors: “I’m sure of it. I could be wrong, but I believe it.”

Vermont voter rolls are perfectly clean: “I’m sure of it. I could be wrong, but I believe it.”

This is the evidentiary standard in Montpelier. Sobering.

    • Yes, to these people, what’s important are their feelings and beliefs—facts and evidence be damned.

    • Very Good Examples Tyler!

What would the positions and beliefs of the Leftist/Progs/Dems be without their redefinitions of EVERYTHING?

They live in an alternate universe of their own fantasies and feelings.

  8. Just found $110k we could be saving the tax payers, plus the collateral damage of this employee would probably be in the millions of dollars saved in fighting stupid legal battles. This would definitely be a good fire, refusing to answer the question what is a woman, also grounds for firing and inability to hold the job. How can you be on the commission of women and not be able to define women??????? Only in Vermont.

Come on Governor Scott, say it,,, you can do it.

We will no longer be needing your services, we appreciate the work and effort you have put in. We wish you the very best in your new endeavors, well have James escort you out and hand in your keys.

    • Great Point Neil!

I say we should ALL write to Governor Scott to ask him to fire Carrie Brown. If she can’t define what a “woman” is, how is she qualified to be the Executive Director for the Vermont Commission on Women? The first qualification for an Executive Director should be to know the difference between a woman and a man.

  9. Hmmm, the world that Carrie Brown wants is women trying to compete in MLB and failing to get beyond single A and trans women entering women’s track and field and replacing real women. Thank God World Athletics decided years ago that trans women would not be allowed to compete against real women in track and field meets sanctioned by World Athletics.

  10. There’s not a thing wrong with men’s and women’s sports being segregated. I think one sex infiltrating the other’s sport degrades the whole sport. The same goes with boy and girl scouting or other institutions where same sexes can learn and grow from each other. Men learn to be good men by being around each other and building each other up. The same goes for women. The phrase from the Bible “steel sharpens steel” comes to mind.
