Vermont’s mail-ballot system will proceed without new federal Postal Service restrictions after the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday left in place a lower-court order blocking the rules for the November election.
Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas welcomed the Sept. 14 decision Tuesday and said Vermont ballots will be mailed by Oct. 1.
“This ruling is a win for all voters and for democracy,” Copeland Hanzas said. “Vermonters can be assured that they will get their ballots via mail and can enjoy the convenience of voting securely from home.”
The dispute grew out of a March executive order from President Donald Trump directing the U.S. Postal Service to develop new requirements for mail ballots, including new envelope and tracking standards and voter-list verification. The administration said the measures were intended to strengthen election integrity. USPS later adopted a rule implementing new requirements for the November election, but states and voting groups challenged it in federal court.
A federal judge in Massachusetts blocked the USPS rule from taking effect for the election. The Postal Service asked the Supreme Court to allow the rule to take effect while the case continued.
The Supreme Court declined that request Monday, leaving the lower-court injunction in place.
Copeland Hanzas thanked Vermont Attorney General Charity Clark’s office for its work in the case and said state and local election officials could now move ahead with preparations.
“The Constitution is clear: states control elections,” Copeland Hanzas said. “I look forward to putting the chaos of this month’s long legal battle behind us and continuing our work to hold a free, fair, accessible, and secure General Election here in Vermont.”
Ballots will be mailed to Vermont voters by Oct. 1. Copeland Hanzas recommends that voters returning ballots by mail send them by mid-October.
Voters may also return ballots through their town’s secure drop box or directly to their town clerk before Election Day. Ballot status can be tracked through the Vermont Voter Portal.
Vermonters who want to vote in person on Election Day may do so. Copeland Hanzas encouraged them to “BYOB” — bring your own ballot — by taking the ballot they received in the mail to the polls.

SOS applauds so people like Peter Welch, who since his election to the Senate, saw his personal net worth increase 5000%…you heard me right…5000% and didn’t answer when the FBI director asked him how that was possible .So she applauds, so people like this, can remain in power, and rule over us, or Dirty Bernie with 3 houses and the legacy of a crime ridden city ,a college gone under, and the investigation of that, covered up by his offices, in DC squashing it…she applauds so he can continue. These people are supposed to make the Vermonters richer, and not ride the Vermonters backs towards untold riches. Throw these bums out. VOTE REPUBLICAN! Even if you don’t like the candidate, vote GOP and when we have majority we can work the kinks out. Do yourself ,the state, and the country, a favor, and throw these bums out, who rob from the poor, to get rich, and rides their collective backs into lifelong power, over their subjects, like the royals families of old. Leeches…blood sucking leeches every one of them.

If you have to have a panel, to discuss and try to convince the public our elections are without fraud, you already lost me. They’re all crooked, especially the demoncrats. How can we allow non-citizens to vote only in our local elections? And not in the federal? Who’s keeping track, that’s right, the democrats, counting all their new voter base, while not giving up the roles for review. They know exactly what they’re doing. Ladies and gentlemen, the fraud is not only in Washington it seems, Montpelier is riddled with slimy politicians too. Wake up, if anyone on this state votes Democrat in November, they alone should bear all responsibility for what happens. Leave us common sense voters alone.
Anytime someone says “It is good for Democracy”, what they really mean is that it is good for the Democratic Party.
The reality that in progressive Vermont, fraudulent voting isn’t needed. With that said, no one should be happy with what the Secretary of State of State said about our voting system. No where does she mention about the validity of the voter registration lists or the addresses that the ballots get mailed to. In areas with high turnover of housing, there is a high potential of ballots being delivered to bad addresses and voted. I am sure all votes get counted as the Secretary of State likes to say, but there is little or no oversight as to whether the people voting the ballot are valid.
It’s all about chain of custody. There is no chain of custody when you drop a ballot in the mail. Would anyone like that if law enforcement did that with evidence?
