A former vault supervisor at Jay Peak Resort has been charged with embezzlement after Vermont State Police say she stole more than $70,000 from the resort over several months.
Police allege Lisa Gaylor, 41, of Barton, took cash in increments of $2,000 to $6,000 from a secure vault between the fall of 2025 and spring of 2026 while working as the resort’s vault supervisor. Investigators determined the total loss to Jay Peak Pacific LLC was $70,790.
The investigation began April 21, 2026, after the theft was reported. Gaylor was taken into custody on July 22, processed at the Derby Barracks, and released with a citation to answer the embezzlement charge.

Here we go again.
Unfortunately, historical research identifies Vermont as one of the states with the highest per-capita rates of reported embezzlement losses.
Industry studies have consistently found that women account for a majority of these cases, largely because they disproportionately occupy bookkeeping, payroll, accounting, and office management positions.
The typical offender is a respected employee in her late 40s who has spent years earning the confidence necessary to exploit organizational trust.
Sad.
The big distinction Vermont bares is the low deterrence value of our inadequate prosecution of property crimes. IF you embezzle, you MAY have to give back, SOME OF the money.
and it often turns out they were using the funds for cars, vacations, homes, and rearely because they “needed” the money for essential living expenses.

A Westfield, Vermont, woman was in court Friday to plead guilty to stealing $63,000 from the Westfield Fire District.
Kelly Randall embezzled the money over four years from the Westfield Fire District while she was the department’s treasurer, according to court documents.
It appears Jay Peak does attract more than its fair share of charlatans.
They do rely on a large foreign base for their revenue. Recreation tariff…anyone?
Bill Stenger, and Ariel stole millions. Biggest thefts in VT history. But they are, and will, get much less punishment. This is America. Just stealing thousands? Naw, you will get punished!
It’s a popular resort and apparently lots of cash transactions… places like that are cherry pickins, especially for those who are cunning and sly. I had my taxes done by the “volunteer” AARP folks, and one older gray-haired gal literally said to me that if she could get away with stealing from Walmart, she would do it, too… as we had a conversation about shrinkage at the place I work. A tax preparer said this to my face. What does that tell you all? There is no shame in America regarding breaking the law. It’s a badge of honor among many right around us.
That comment was unfortunate, however I did have a Home Depot Loss Prevention Manger tell me when I commented on so many different faces at cashier stations, seemed high turnover, “It’s not hard to find cashiers, it’s hard to find honest ones”! Pretty much same thing said to me by a Branch Manager of a huge east coast bank about tellers and Banks rarely complain to authorities due to word getting around unless it is massive, they just handle it by agreement to leave.
