A national education watchdog group says dozens of Vermont school districts have policies that may allow student gender transitions to be kept from parents, according to a report released April 20.

Defending Education identified 37 Vermont school districts and supervisory unions — representing 199 schools and more than 52,000 students — with policies it says permit staff to withhold information about a student’s gender identity from parents in certain circumstances.

The report also states that many of the same policies allow students to participate in sports and use facilities based on their gender identity.

The group’s findings are based in part on guidance issued by the Vermont Agency of Education, specifically its 2016 “Best Practices for Schools Regarding Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Students.” That document has been used as a model for local district policies across the state, according to the report. The 2016 policy can be viewed, and downloaded, in the report.

Among the districts listed are Burlington School District, Champlain Valley Unified School District, Montpelier Roxbury School District, and Winooski School District, along with numerous supervisory unions statewide. See full list below.

The report raises concerns about parental notification and involvement. It says some guidance instructs school personnel to prioritize student privacy, particularly if disclosure to parents is believed to pose a risk to the student.

The Vermont Agency of Education guidance emphasizes creating supportive environments for transgender and gender-nonconforming students, including respecting students’ names and pronouns and ensuring access to programs and facilities.

The report does not evaluate how frequently such policies are applied in practice, nor does it include responses from Vermont school officials or state education leaders. VDC has reached out to several of the schools listed below and will publish results from them, or other districts, as they are received.

The districts cited in the Defending Education report include (see policies by clicking on link):

  1. This is not like a policy on the use of nicknames or one that prohibits dark-soled shoes on the gym floor. Their reasoning, and what they refer to as a “best practice” is that “disclosure to parents is believed to pose a risk to the student”? Common sense should dictate that withholding such substantial info from parents is posing a much greater risk. It sounds as if Defending Education is one of those pesky watchdog organizations that the left would like to define as a “hate group” and have it banned. The public education system in Vermont is not only financially irresponsible but also socially reckless.

  2. This is demonic, pure evil and must be stopped, and those doing this fired, and never be permitted in a job dealing with youth ever again…or banish from the state of Vermont.
    This is truly evil.

  3. To me, this is a criminal act by “our” “education” “authorities”. Charge em & fine em.

  4. I am sure glad my three adult children were not educated in Vermont. A Parent is the Guardian and caregiver for any minor child below the age of 18 unless removed by a Court of Law…… or so I thought. The education system is out of control. Stick to teaching and nothing but teaching and stop with the social engineering. Gender confusion? Not on my watch. After “kids” are 18 they can prefer to be whatever but I’m sick and tired of want-a-be social workers playing God. Teachers as I say….stick to teaching.

    • I am currently facing off in my town on the topic of property tax, you will find as I have, that no where in our VT constitution will you find the delegated authority to tax private property, quite the opposite, they have no authority to tax your coat and they have non to tax shelter, or land, despite long standing practice to the contrary. Further they have no instructions to link property owners to a tax that goes to government designed and executed schools. Education IS mentioned in the VT constitution, but not with express instructions as a matter of government to implement. So, I have begun to show up at my select board meetings beginning with a request to this clarifying question: Do you claim superior title to my land? ( meaning they can seize it if I do not pay them) and can you show me the chain of authority that leads back to our Vermont Constitution, the highest law of the land which has not been repealed? So to proceed without risk, I have quite a few steps to go, and when I speak with them I don’t blame them, I say, we all inherited a mess, and they agree. I will eventually while the matter is confronted, begin to put my amount that goes to the school into a fund to fund homeschoolers. I will also denounce my participation in a Pharma-factory farm where the students are each and every one of them a means to pharma profitability by virtue of mandated vaccines that have been issued with a lack of due process, and which do not perform as described. Pharma is a special interest group who is offered undue liability shielding, not constitutional, and I cannot be forced to participate in a contract such as that.

  5. This is just one of many things’ parents are kept in the dark about. The more you become aware of the worse it gets. Vermont’s education system not only produces poorly educated students it also has created a whole new level of mental illness that will be carried by these students likely for the rest of their life.

    • Hopefully the lawsuits in the next 20 years when they finally come to their senses will kill this crap once and for all.

  6. When , Boys and Girls
    I say When !!!

Will anyone in the Vermont Republican party actually come out and Voluntarily Say ,

” There are only 2 Genders”

It factually took me 4 years to coerce one single Republican to say ” 2 ” and that was by pure trickery and deflection of the topic they were trying to press .

Vermont needs real people to get involved, not get Mad , but actively engage in Schools, Select boards , town and city councils, then legislature.

Get with the program and exercise your constitutional rights , my fellow Vermonter’s

  7. After 9/11 and 4 globalist POTUS terms into the 21st Century, the elites saw what happened with Bitcoin, and THAT was very worrying.
AI technology is to settle things forever — not to allow the lower classes ever to become Nuevo Riche. No more Elons.
No one is to come to them but through DEI worship.
Communism/socialism/progressivism all ensure that no individual will come out of nowhere and have a world-shattering patent, or cure, or method, or song, or book, or be a great leader, or shine in any way if they can throw a monkey wrench into it. Elites know that bureaucracy is deliberate bottlenecking, and it protects the aristocracy.

  8. This is 100% illegal. Schools are for education only. The parents are responsible for their children and the school cannot make decisions for the child or the parents. The school is responsible for reporting everything to the parents! The state of worthless Democrat Vermont has once again made stupidity into a rule that will result in major lawsuits that will be paid by taxpayers! Democrats are Domestic Terrorists! Stop voting for Democrats!

    • Ken, we need to remember whether it is in statute or not the only things that are unlawful are what Democrats say is illegal

  9. Perhaps Guy you could shove this article in the governor’s face and have him respond to it. Does he feel any shame? Has he seen Finland’s latest study that definitely proves that both the males to females and females to males reassignment surgeries were detrimental to their mental health. Their results prove it!!! They thought about suicide more after surgery. Poor body image because this surgery is a lifelong decision and the surgery scars are never going away!!!
