Vermont’s most stunning scenic mountain view to the east – Mt. Washington, the largest peak in New Hampshire – faces a possible name change. But public opinion is running against the change to Mount Agiocochook, the Journal-Opinion reports.
InDepthNH.org reviews state opposition to proposed named changes for Mount Washington and the Baker River.
“[Easton NH resident Kris] Pastoriza urged the U.S. Board of Geographic Names to change the name of Mount Washington to Mount Agiocochook as it was known by native Americans before European settlement, because the first U.S. President owned slaves, and that the name for the Baker River be changed to the native Asquamchumauke River, noting Lt. Thomas Baker, for whom it is now named and his troops destroyed a Pemigewasset native village near Plymouth in 1712.”
The U.S. Board of Geographic Names meets this morning, but neither Mount Washington nor the Baker River are on the panel’s meeting agenda.
“As of August 8, the BGN has received 65 emails from individuals, 14 in support of renaming Mount Washington and 51 opposed; many of these also referred to the Baker River change,” according to BGN meeting minutes from August.
Pro-Hamas panel discussion – Tuesday October 17, 7 pm, at the O.N.E. Community Center 20 Allen St in Burlington, several pro-Palestinian groups will hold a panel discussion.
“Early on Saturday, October 7th, Palestinian resistance fighters broke through Israel’s siege of Gaza. In response, Israel has declared total war against the people of Gaza, completely cutting off access to food, water, and electricity, while bombing the Strip and killing entire families,” the statement said.
This panel, featuring Wafic Faour (Vermonters for Justice in Palestine), Debra Stoleroff (Jewish Voice for Peace), and Nolan Rampy (Tempest Collective), will discuss how to understand the current situation in Palestine, the 17-year siege of Gaza, and questions of resistance, colonialism, the role of Biden and US imperialism, and mass struggle.
The event is sponsored by Burlington Tempest Collective and Vermonters for Justice in Palestine.
Outdoor recreation grants – The State of Vermont today announced $6 million in Vermont Outdoor Recreation Economic Collaborative (VOREC) funding will be available to strengthen their local outdoor recreation economies, including support for communities to recover flood impacted outdoor recreation resources and projects to expand outdoor equity.
The Vermont Office of Racial Equity will collaborate on the administration of the Outdoor Equity track. Shalini Suryanarayana, Education and Outreach Associate for the Office said, “We are so pleased to see a focus on outdoor equity and the way equity considerations have been woven into all the other funding tracks. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to work together to change the landscape in Vermont in ways that can lift everyone up.”
The online application portal is open through December 15, 2023, for all grant tracks. Projects should begin in summer 2024.

Just more foolishness, to appease a few woke Idiots, I assume all these social justice warriors are just trying to justify what their ancestors probably did, and this will help them sleep better at night………….. Mt. Washington will always be just that !!!
And Mt. Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Adams, Pierce etc. in N.H. Which one would face the “holier than thou” apologists next ?
To heck with the apologists ! I’m sick and tired of their B.S. If they have a problem with our history maybe they should move to a country that is politically, and ethnically pure enough to meet their standards, if such a place exists.
Let he who is perfect cast the first stone.
The indigenous peoples of America were know to hold slaves as well, and if they did not like you (as a slave), you might be burned at the stake or beaten to death with rocks and clubbed sticks in a gauntlet. If I had to choose one from the other I would happily live the life of a slave at George Washington’s place. I’m not saying this to pick on indigenous peoples, only pointing out that, if you think about it, the justification provided for the name change is hypocritical and narrow minded.
A fun Saturday night for the Comanche was to bury the victim up to their neck in an ant hill with their eyelids cut off while getting high on peyote. Not to be outdone, the female Comanche would physically disfigure and cripple females taken as slaves so the menfolk wouldn’t want to bed them down. Men who survived Comanche raid would be dragged behind horsed till they were dead and to speed things up they would flay the skin of the soles of the victims feet.
Colonialism? Yes!
I wish they’d stop the woke BS and leave things alone. By the way are they going to discredit George Washington Carver too?
I am speechless. If this is allowed to happen then people need to mobilize to stop this crap. The country’s culture and history is being dismantled before our eyes. The United Nations is working with Indigenous people and is responsible for this crap. Indigenous people hold a position of power at the UN, since I inception. I read a recent Club of Rome document and it stated the plan is to give all the land back to indigenous people to be environmental stewards. This is why diversity and equity statements center around stolen land from indigenous people. The Club is Rome and United Nations have a shared agenda. The ex executive director of the United Nations, served for 17 years, said that the UN and Club of Rome have been corrupted and no longer serve their initial purpose. No kidding!
Spot on – as usual – Christine…
Indeed.
So, who are those so-called indigenous peoples? Life on earth goes back a long, long way. And, if the typical logic of these power-hungry globalists is any indication, they will choose a segment in history that supports their narrative, take it out of context, and declare it an unequivocally reasonable perspective.
But who are those so-called indigenous peoples? And why do they have rights to anything based on the sole and arbitrary assignment of their existence in the timing of life on earth?
FYI – there is a place in Salem, NH called America’s Stonehenge. Archaeologist’s radio-carbon analysis of charcoal on the site shows that there were humans occupying the area 4,000 years ago. And artifacts have been found that indicate a Celtic society created the site.
Of course, the claims of hoax and conspiracy theory about the Celtic relationship abound. What else would anyone expect from those adhering to the globalist, Club of Rome, World Economic Forum, New World Order, types.
It is the logic and the method of the globalists that must be questioned and not taken as gospel.

I couldn’t agree more. The document I read did not define indigenous people or explain anything in detail. Here is a UN link that provides more information and insight. I have not dug deep into this sight due to limited time. See the reference to 5.a.1 (land). You may find this interesting.
Sorry Jay, I esponded by failed to provide the UN link about Indigenous Peoples and the 2030 Agenda.

Liberalism is a mental disorder…
Seems more than reasonable cause then they could put a culturally appropriate casino on it . Club Agiocochook has a nice ring to it don’t you think.
That may not be possible as under the new stakeholder capitalism system, created by finance, WEF and United Nations, companies, municipalities and cities are rated on the new Environmental, Social, and Governence metric. Alcohol, cigarettes and casinos are excluded industries, which means they will be denied capital from investment firms and banks. The UK is already phasing out cigarettes. The ESG metric scores are based on compliance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Vermonters whose finances and economic property depends on these things excluded industries should research this topic.
$6 Million Vermont taxpayer dollars for outdoor equity!? A rather excessively large grift that could provide housing for a number of homeless people. No honor among thieves.
That’s a funny concept…”outdoor equity”. Does the Governor think it’s finally time to take down the “whites only” signs at all the State Parks, trail heads and fishing accesses? This sick obsession with race and equity in outdoor public spaces is not helping anything. A woke college professor a while back suggested that the reason that Black folks dont participate in outdoor recreation at the same level as whitey is because trees remind them of lynchings (people of all colors were victims of lynchings). Should we chop down all the trees on public lands to alleviate this unease? Some businesses are virtue signaling by posting signs saying that “all are welcome here” with a rainbow/transgender flag…isn’t that already the case with all of our existing civil rights and public accommodation laws on the books? Enough already…
The Truth is the millions of dollars poured into the grift of “recreation” is a front to the grease palms of the participants. Suddenly, as people are forced to sleep outdoors, fend for shelter and sustenance like characters from a Dickens novel or the Great Depression, the despots are seizing upon their final opportunity to feather their own beds. Disgusting, immoral, unethical and above all, evil to the core.
If you study history, it is obvious that the status of being “indigenous” is a relative term. Peoples have migrated all over the planet since the dawn of recorded history.
If Europeans came to what is now called North America in the post-Columbian age, then their descendants are “more indigenous” than the Asians who arrived 2 centuries later. Should white folks who can trace their ancestors to the Mayflower pilgrims be given special privileges over those of Asian and African ancestry? Where does this all end?
