SPRINGFIELD — Springfield Police, assisted by the heavily armed Vermont State Police SWAT Team, conducted an early morning drug raid at 26 Litchfield St. on Friday.

About a half dozen people were taken out of the single-story home about 6 a.m., a witness told Vermont News First.

The homeowner, John Congdon, 40, was later cited for a series of drug and gun charges, police said.

Springfield Police said he is due in Vermont Superior Court on Aug. 11 to face charges of narcotics sales, and possession of cocaine and heroin.   He also is cited for possession of a deadly weapon during a felony and knowingly permitting drug sales within his residence, police said.

Vermont State Police said they were there for backup and referred questions to Springfield Police as the lead investigative agency.

Weathersfield, Chester and Hartford Police also assisted.

A local resident said the site was considered a problem house by neighbors.  Plenty of activity was reported with people coming and going on a daily basis.

Attempts to reach Windsor County State’s Attorney Ward Goodenough were unsuccessful.
