It’s been a while since I wrote a Publisher’s Letter. Here’s what’s new…..first of all, we’re officially seeking to hire a full-time, skilled, experienced news reporter.

THAT 404 ERROR – recently, some readers searching online for stories to read or share from April 23 or before have gotten the dreaded ‘404 error,’ meaning the search engine can’t find it. This is probably due to a settings-gone-wrong goof by yours truly. I’m working on a permanent fix but in the meantime you can always go to www.vermontdailychronicle.com and enter key words in the Search Box (located at the 2 o’clock position above the Vermont Daily Chronicle masthead/logo). 

MORNING DRIVE – In our effort to promote solid journalism around the state, Vermont Daily Chronicle will soon publish a link for Morning Drive, WVMT’s 6-9 AM, Monday-Friday public affairs call-in program. Kurt Wright and co-host Anthony Neri aren’t afraid to schedule politically-incorrect guests and then ask them challenging, politically-incorrect questions. That makes them two of the good guys, in my book. Check out the April 28 interview with longtime reporter Mike Donoghue. 

SHORTS column – We’ve started a more-or-less daily column that compresses five or six news stories into one news story by distilling a news story into just one paragraph. When he wasn’t saving western civilization from a thousand years of fascist tyranny as the wartime prime minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill made his living as a journalist. In his writing and speeches, he lived by the adage: “It is slothful not to compress your thoughts.” SHORTS is also a sign of healthy growth in our news-coverage capacity. Committed as we are to limiting each issue to 10 news and commentary posts per day, SHORTS helps us quickly and easily communicate ‘all the news that’s fit to print’ (to quote the NYTimes’ motto). 

OBITUARIES – Readers sometimes ask why we don’t publish them. Answer: we would if we could! Vermont funeral homes let the survivors decide about obituary media placement. If you want an obituary to appear in the Vermont Daily Chronicle, please tell the funeral home that our email address is news@vermontdailychronicle.com. They, and we, will take it from there.
