Mahdawi ordered deported – but staying pending appeal

An immigration judge has ordered Mohsen Mahdawi, the Fairlee resident and Columbia University anti-Israel activist, deported, the ACLU of Vermont reported June 10.

However, Mahdawi may remain in the U.S. pending the outcome of his appeal of a separate federal court case.

Mahdawi, a green-card holder, became a cause celebre among Vermont’s anti-Trump resistance movement last spring when Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered him detained and deported. He fought the order and won in U.S. federal court in Burlington. Several Vermont state senators held  press conferences in support of him, and he was applauded from the floor of the Vermont House.

Rubio maintained in his deportation order that Mahdawi’s speech in support of Palestinian human rights undermined U.S. foreign policy, grounds for deportation under  the Immigration and Nationality Act).

Mahdawi disagrees.

“I come from a refugee camp in Palestine, where my family still resides. I know what it means to live without rights, without voice, without safety. America was the first place I ever felt true freedom and dignity,” Mohsen Mahdawi told the ACLU. “For over a decade I have built my life here, loved this community, and chosen this country’s ideals as my own. That is the country I chose — and now the administration is abusing immigration law to silence me for speaking the truth about Palestinian suffering and genocide….the First Amendment is sacred, and I refuse to be silenced.”

Neither Mahdawi nor the ACLU mention state police citing his attempt to return from an overseas trip over a decade ago with illegal drugs and a large amount of cash in his possession. Nor do they mention the police report (cited and brushed aside by the federal judge in his decision) about his alleged effort to work for a Vermont gun repair shop, also over a decade ago, citing his expertise acquired in his homeland.

  1. With that degree he coul sell his property pay off his debts and help his refugee family in Palestine !

  2. It’s interesting to see the differences in reporting of this issue between VDC and VT Digger.

It’s like two different worlds. It’s no wonder Vermonters are so confused, the propaganda is very sophisticated in our state and very extensive.

So, in finding the truth, it’s oft good to look at peoples heart and the actions and words they provide as evidence. What about this man’s family? Abandoned? Why wouldn’t some on go to the neighboring country with family as asylum law dictates?

Why only the United States? Since we are the most racist country in the world? Why is? We do have laws….hence why we are a republic.

  3. Your little bungalow in Fairlee has a beautiful lookout view of the bowl below, Moshen. You talked of peace accords in your background. Why are we now learning about guns and drugs in your background? Do you really seek peace then seek the one who gave His life so all may know the peace of forgiveness from God. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLfQ97DueWo&forced

  4. Deport him. Stop trying to protect these troublemaking pot, stirring criminals. We want him gone and we want every illegal gone from the state of Vermont as well. Democrats are domestic terrorists

  5. If this guy is so happy here in this country then why does he stir up so much trouble and attention. Deport him and take some of his supporters with him. Let’s make it stick this time.

  6. This is taxpayer money being wasted on a Mother that sud the city after called the cops to arrest her kid that has mental issues! The mother should be arrested for child abuse. This is the dumbest thing that’s ever happened. Let me guess it’s because she’s black. They are the biggest racist in this nation and they cry race every time this cause ripples in the water!

  7. Violating any immigration rule could result in removal from the country.
In general, a green card holder can be deported under the following conditions.

They were inadmissible at the time of entry
Their permanent residence status was conditional based on family or employment, but the status has been terminated
They knowingly helped smuggle someone into the country
They committed marriage fraud to obtain a green card
They have been convicted of a crime that warrants removal
They failed to advise immigration authorities of a change of address within 10 days
They falsely represented information to obtain a green card or other immigration benefits
    They engaged in terrorist activity
    They became a public charge
