South Burlington, VT — The Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport (Leahy BTV) will conduct a full-scale emergency simulation on Saturday, September 12, 2026, in partnership with local, state, and federal emergency response agencies. The exercise is expected to begin around 9:00 a.m. and conclude around 12:00 p.m.

The exercise is part of Leahy BTV’s ongoing emergency preparedness program and is required every three years by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for Part 139 airports, including Leahy BTV. It gives airport staff and emergency response partners an opportunity to practice working together during a large-scale emergency in a safe, controlled setting.

The simulation will test emergency response procedures, communication, and coordination among the participating agencies while helping identify areas where plans and processes can be strengthened.

“Being prepared for an emergency is a responsibility we take very seriously at Leahy BTV,” said Nic Longo, Director of Aviation at Leahy BTV. “While we hope we never have to put these plans into action, this simulation allows us to work side by side with our fantastic emergency response partners, test our readiness, and learn how we can be even better prepared to protect our travelers, employees, and community.”

“We want to thank over 200 community members who are volunteering to participate in this event,” said Jeff Bartley, Director of Innovation & Marketing. “Their support not only allows us to create a realistic exercise, but also enables other organizations, such as our local first responders and hospitals, to test their own systems and readiness.”

Following the exercise, participating agencies will conduct a formal review to assess the response, identify strengths and areas for improvement, and capture key lessons learned. The findings will help inform future training and strengthen emergency preparedness and response planning at Leahy BTV.

The exercise will not affect normal airport operations. Travelers and community members may notice an increased presence of emergency vehicles and personnel in and around the airport during the simulation. There is no actual emergency taking place.
