Pledges to break stalemate between Legislature, Scott

by Guy Page

Rep. Laura Sibilia, a five-term independent representing the Windham County towns of Dover, Stratton, Wardsboro, Somerset and Jamaica, announced Tuesday afternoon she will seek election as Speaker of the House.

In a letter to legislators, Sibilia cited “need for improved communication, collaboration and nonpartisan problem-solving, principles that have historically defined our state,” Sibilia said. “While the governor shares some responsibility for the current climate, we must hold ourselves accountable as legislators and improve our communication with all members, branches of government, and, most importantly, Vermonters. Vermont and our public institutions cannot afford an extended political stalemate.”

Sibilia currently is the vice-chair of the House Committee on Environment and Energy, where she worked to pass the Affordable Heating Act and the Act 250 reform bill, among other high-profile bills passed by the committee and then the Legislature this session.

Current Speaker of the House Jill Krowinski has held the office since January, 2021. She had been Democrat Majority Leader since 2017 and is a former vice president of Planned Parenthood of New England.

Sibilia emailed out this announcement at about 4 PM:

As I conclude my fifth term in the Vermont House of Representatives, I want to share with you that I have informed my fellow members of the House of my intention to run for Speaker of the House. The challenges our state faces—particularly regarding affordability, housing and the urgent need for adaptation in our economy and communities—demand effective leadership and collaboration. Despite a legislative supermajority, significant work remains undone, and many voices are not being fully heard.

I believe it’s time for an approach that prioritizes nonpartisan problem-solving and open communication. We need to focus on the urgent issues facing Vermonters, such as education and healthcare, while ensuring that all members of the legislature have the resources and support they need to participate meaningfully in this process.

As Speaker, I would play a vital role in shaping our state’s legislation and guiding the legislative process. This position involves leading discussions on key issues, setting the agenda for our sessions, and ensuring that all voices are heard—especially yours. By fostering collaboration among legislators, I can help create bipartisan solutions that directly benefit Vermont’s communities.

For you, this means having a leader committed to putting your needs and concerns at the forefront of our legislative work. My goal is to create a more inclusive and responsive government that truly serves all Vermonters.

I am grateful for your ongoing support. Additional support is welcomed in order to ensure that, should I be successful, the legislature is fully prepared to begin it’s work on Day One.

Thank you for the trust you have placed in me for these past 10 years. I am confident we can build a brighter future for Vermont.

Sibilia said sent the following letter to House Members today:

Dear Members – As I conclude my fifth term in the Vermont House of Representatives, I want to address the significant challenges our constituents are facing, particularly around affordability, housing, and the urgent need for adaptation in our economy and communities. This past session has highlighted a deteriorating relationship between the legislature and the governor, ongoing leadership changes, and grave concerns about the sustainability of our public education system, healthcare, and our communities’ ability to adapt to the times as we emerge from COVID.

After extensive discussions with my legislative colleagues, family, and constituents, I am announcing my candidacy for the position of Speaker of the House for the upcoming biennium. My priority is to ensure we take effective legislative action to meet the needs of all Vermonters. Too many voices are going unheard, both of Vermonters and of legislators, and important work remains unfinished, even with a supermajority.

In my communications with fellow members, I have emphasized the need for improved communication, collaboration and nonpartisan problem-solving, principles that have historically defined our state. While the governor shares some responsibility for the current climate, we must hold ourselves accountable as legislators and improve our communication with all members, branches of government, and, most importantly, Vermonters. Vermont and our public institutions cannot afford an extended political stalemate.

If elected Speaker, I will prioritize increasing the capacity of the legislature to effectively address our most urgent issues. This means providing our committees with the resources and support needed to tackle these critical challenges head-on. Additionally, I am committed to developing the capacity of all members to participate meaningfully in this process. We must narrow our focus to the most urgent issues and the most effective actions.

I’m grateful for the encouragement I have received from members across all parties. As an Independent, I have a long history of bringing people together to collaborate on finding solutions. I take this decision seriously and am fully committed to being prepared to do the necessary work from day one. I look forward to continuing conversations with all members about our shared concerns, so we can take effective action and make the progress Vermonters expect from us.

Thank you for your work on behalf of your constituents. We all know these challenges are hard, but our state is full of promise. If we can take the time to listen to each other and work through these challenges, Vermont’s future will be bright.

VDC has asked several legislators to offer comments on Sibilia’s announcement. We have also emailed Sibilia questions about whether, if elected, she will move forward with a vote on the Affordable Heating Act.

Rep. Anne Donahue of Northfield – a former Republican running this year as an independent – responded with this comment: “I was pleased to see Laura’s announcement, because the process is always strengthened by having a contested election. I was the sole ‘no’ vote for last term’s vote for Speaker ‘by acclamation,’ which did not even allow for expressions of dissent to the nominee.”

  1. Rep. Laura Sibilia, better state her position on the so-called ” affordable Heating act ” which is “not affordable” for most Vermonters, and we know Jill Krowinski is pushing this nonsense bill……………………..

Wake up people, vote these progressives out, starting with Krowinski needs to go !!

    • Sibilia is the lead sponsor/lead advocate for the Clean Heat Standard in the House. She was also chief pusher of the Renewable Energy Standard, and the lead on the new pupil weighting law that blew up the property tax. She certainly has the reverse Midas touch!

    • The reverse Midas Touch for average Vermonters, perhaps. But Sibilia and Krowinski are both gold mines for the crony capitalists and NGOs milking our billions of taxpayer dollars under the false premise of saving us from our alleged collective ignorance.

  2. Ms. Sibilia as Speaker and the rest of the Marxist gang running the State of Vermont couldn’t manage their way out of a paper bag, and all she wants to do is point fingers. Everything they have touched has turned to spit. (but we need a pay raise)

It will be interesting to watch if DJT wins and the money that has flowed from DC stops, its a 3rd of our current budget. Will be interesting to see them work there way out of that HOLE, wait till you see the pearl clutching and horror stories that will emerge from Montpelier when the PINK slips start to roll.

    • krowinski and mitzi johnson before her did an excellent job herding their minions to approve legislation that moves Vermont to a marxist state. I suspect sibilia isn’t pleased with the speed at which this is happening. sibilia is, as evidenced by her statements and actions as state rep. far left of the current cabal under krowinski’s rule. she wants a faster trip to the totalitarian utopia- and might just succeed, should the super-majority remain come Jan 1 ’25.
Beware of this woman, she is dangerous, disingenuous- a wolf in sheep’s clothing

  3. Stay tuned, this dog and pony show will continue until we have a bond default in this state and this whole ponzi operation comes crashing down. The debt credit system is falling apart. You can not inflate your way out of this. Now have a good day and the property tax has to change.

  4. Hey ain’t that cool that our elected representatives have the same choices we have ? I wonder if they will pinch off their nostrils and throw a dart at a board knowing you lose either way !

  5. “Bipartisan solutions” sound like the continued destruction of humanity. I think you should stick to “nonpartisan”, and worry about REMOVING all the previous failed “bipartisan solutions” of prior years before attempting to “do” anything.

“putting your needs and concerns at the forefront of our legislative work” – This is how we got in this mess in the first place. Let us take care of our own needs, and get government working on undoing all of their previous attempts and *fixing* our “needs and concerns”

“… address the significant challenges our constituents are facing, particularly around affordability” – Easy fix, stop stealing our money.

“housing” – Easy fix, stop stealing our money, and maybe people wouldn’t let their homes fall into disrepair. Are you a home builder?

“… grave concerns about the sustainability of our public education system, healthcare, and our communities’ ability to adapt to the times as we emerge from COVID.” – What year are you living in? We didn’t have an issue with COVID, we had complete devastation 100% created with government’s and big pharma’s “response” to COVID. Public education is an EASY fix see my response here: https://vermontdailychronicle.com/future-of-public-education-commission-cant-meet-deadline-chair-chastises-legislature/#comments

“… prioritize increasing the capacity of the legislature” – This sounds like a terrible idea, cut their hours and cut cut cut their prior failed programs. Enough with the dog pile on dog piles.

“… providing our committees with the resources and support needed to tackle these critical challenges head-on” – ENOUGH ALREADY! Just stop it. They have completely destroyed this state. Give us back OUR resources, cut ALL the dang committees, and undue everything they have done in at least the last 10 years at minimum!

“We must narrow our focus to the most urgent issues and the most effective actions.” – Very very simple – every single urgent issue is an issue that has been created by derelict of duty, failure to obey the oath to the constitution, and trying to “fix” things by bankrupting the working people, then forcing them on “government help”. The focus needs to be find all the failed previous attemts and remove them. Let the people fix these issues, we can’t afford you. Get out of the way.

“… have a long history of bringing people together to collaborate on finding solutions” – The last 10 years have been absolutely abysmal! Solutions are for US to figure out. Your job is to protect our right to come up with our own solutions, and nothing more.

Rep. Laura Sibilia can write a whole bunch of words that say absolutely nothing. I guess it really takes an idiotic person to win a position voted for by the generally dumb public, even though the voter roles in that district are completely fudged, so it’s probably mafia BS.

  6. I heard Ben Carson say the other day about voter sentiments and our (s)elections: voting for the lesser of two evils – unless Jesus is on the ballot, our elections are voting for the lesser of two evils. The audience erupted in applause.

The statement and response pinged my spirit bigly. Is Ben Carson saying our system in irrevocably evil? Sure sounds like it to me. How demoralizing and imperialistic. So, for all the Christians out there – vote for the lesser of two evils as directed by a proclaimed Christian speaking at the 11th Hour Faith Leaders Conference.

I don’t expect a candidate to be flawless or a devout Christian. I expect them to be Truthful, ethical, and follow the law of the land, the U.S. Constitution. I do not accept voting for any man or woman who is yoked or tethered to evil of any sort. Yet, apparantly, according to Mr. Carson, that is what I and millions of Americans have done for many, many election cycles. In that case, I repent for the sin of supporting ear ticklers, worshipping false idols, and false prophets. I rebuke that evil in the name of Jesus Christ.

God will not be mocked. I have heard said, their tongues will twist and instead of lies, the Truth will come out instead. 2024 – the year of exposure. His hand is moving and He is lifting the veil. Revelation 14:15 And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe.

  7. Laura Sibilia saying “too many voices are going unheard” as a campaign tactic towards other out-of-touch legislators is awfully rich. In her town of residence, Dover, 78% of homes are owned by out-of-state residents, who probably support her out-of-touch, out-of-state, out-of-left-field priorities around global warming, electrifying everything and giving schools a blank check (while requiring nothing in terms of student outcomes).

Who knows, maybe she just got her own property tax bill and finally realized what we’re all dealing with and maybe she had a change of heart based on her own self-interest?

Nobody but Republicans in the Vermont legislature actually care about us or our pocketbooks.

  8. Sibilia has been in VT politics since 2014, 10 years. That’s too long as they get entrenched into that political thinking People “serving” (?) should not be in government more than 6 years and give others to serve with new ideas and principle. Also lobbists can’t influence them as much. Given 6 years perhaps they can truly represent the people in their district. Power shouldn’t have a chance to corrupt given a limited time frame. Likewise need only two Senators per county, being 28 and no district can control VT as the Burlington / Washington areas do. Current government and MVRA Make Vermont Real Again.

    • Of course, you are right or correct. Now let’s remind everyone that Bernie is running again for another 6-year term, he’s 82. He has been suckling the government, taxpayer teat for 30 years and has passed 3 bills in congress, 2 of which were to name two buildings. Will the voters please wake up and send this guy to retirement at one of his 3 homes. My God, haven’t we had enough of him already. The 3 stooges from Vermont are the laughingstock of the normal people. Six more years of Bernie (who only lives in Vermont during parade season) is enough to make normal people gag. It’s time for the snake oil salesman from Brooklyn, NY to retire. He made his fortune, but his supporters
(the Bernie Bros.) are still broke and waiting for the Bernie miracle to lift them out of their poverty. It’s been 30 years; it hasn’t happened and it’s not going to. You see, Bernie’s work will never be done because the USA will always reject the socialist, democratic so-called independent or communist and Bernie’s mission has always been to turn America into a socialist country. Vote him out!

    • They’re both disgusting to say the least period.
