Editor’s note: TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk, who was shot to death in Utah today, spoke in South Burlington in October 2021. The VDC article about his visit is published below.

It’s a little-known fact that Charlie Kirk visited Vermont as a child. He admires much about Vermont government and culture. He thinks Vermont is “one of God’s gifts to America.”
Wait – is Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, derided by local cultural Marxist Kirk Kancelers as a fascist outsider, praising Vermont?
Indeed he is – as he told hundreds of (mostly) supporters Monday night, October 18. And he admits that yesterday, anyway, Vermont surprised him.
“Wow! This is Vermont?” Kirk told the standing, cheering mixed crowd of college students and older people that filled the ballroom at the Doubletree – Hilton (the former Sheraton). “I wasn’t sure what to expect in Bernie Sanders’ hometown.”
Technically, Kirk wasn’t in Burlington, Bernie’s adopted hometown. And therein lies a story.
What the Turning Point USA founder did expect was opposition. His Exposing Critical Racism Tour had already been cancelled from one venue – the Battery Street Hilton in downtown Burlington – under threats of boycotts and, Kirk said, violence from cultural Marxists. The cultural Marxist group CopWatch claimed a ‘victory’ in forcing the cancellation. However, their presence Monday night was relatively small and muted, compared to the large, enthusiastic crowd of Kirk supporters. A strong security presence no doubt dampened the “anti’s’ enthusiasm level as well.
Kirk praised the yellow-shirted student organizers who made the night a success despite such opposition. “It’s very difficult to be a conserative today. It’s more difficult to be a young conservative college student, especially at (he chuckled) the University of Vermont. So you deserve a lot of credit.”
The Arizona resident and Chicago native “grew up coming here, visiting Lake Champlain. It’s one of the most beautiful states in the country. It’s one of God’s gifts to America,” Kirk said. “Your politics are a totally different story.”
In addtion to its natural beauty, Kirk praised Vermont for preserving the little against the big. “Sometimes it’s important that we recognize that we want local communities to stay strong, families stay strong, and that we want limited government and we don’t want overreaching corporations destroying family businesses handed down.”
“This [Burlington] is one of the few cities that has still kept from an aesthetics point the smalltown America, not letting these soulless, godless corporations come in and destroy small business and entrepreneurship.”
Vermonters embrace the notion that “we want to keep things the way they are – which is actually a kind of conservative idea…. In the last 18 months, we as conservatives have stopped being corporate cheerleaders. We should stand for the good, the true, the beautiful, the local and the decentralized, not the foreign and the corrupt.
“We don’t want to be ruled by Washington DC, and we also don’t want to be ruled by Pfizer, Johnson and Johnson, and Astrozenaca.”
Second, Kirk praised the principle and practice of Town Meeting – “That kind of idea of participatory government is a uniquely American idea – that we’re going to take a day off from work and show up” to practice “the consent of the governed.”
“We don’t want to be ruled by the same 100 companies. We don’t want to be ruled by Big Government and Big Google.”
And finally – “The third thing I love about Vermont – I love your gun laws!,” Kirk said. “You have great gun laws!”
Kirk said he’s concerned that Vermont is the third-least churched in the country, because when faith in Something Bigger goes, so does freedom, either to collectivist or authoritarian rule. People who reject God always fill the vacuum with something else – often government or materialism, Kirk said.
Kirk told the crowd Monday night he is inaccurately, unfairly criticized as wanting the U.S. to become more white. “Vermont is the whitest state in the nation is Vermont, and their politics are pretty screwed up.” However, he does criticize self-consciously ‘white oppressor’ supporters of Critical Race Theory who see their role in American society as “It’s our position as white allies to blow it up.”
“Please go explore the world, explore the Scriptures, explore a relationship with God and Jesus Christ,” he implored the small group of assembled, mostly-quiet protesters. “There’s so much more that’s beautiful out there than just trying to cancel other people. It’s not a great way to live.”
Kirk said he always gets a chuckle when Bernie Sanders talks about White Privilege: “Which of your three homes are you going to donate to the disadvantaged population of the state?”

My condolences to Charlie Kirk’s family and friends – particularly to his young children. To those responsible and involved in this heinous act, let it be known: those who walk through your dark valley of death and destruction, know you by your fruits and know your all seeing eye is no match for the eyes that created it all – sees all, hears all, knows all – from beginning to end and back again. Charlie knew that as well – now he is in a place, with a bird’s eye view of the entire battle field and trenches he traversed through with courage and unshakable faith. When Jesus Christ lifts up one of His warriors after an act of evil – Ezekiel 11:21 But as for them whose heart walketh after the heart of their detestable things and their abominations, I will recompense their way upon their own heads, saith the Lord God.
Make no mistake: This fiendish and cowardly act was not carried out by any lone individual with “mental health” issues but was executed, figuratively & literally, by a highly organized plot carried out by the equally organized and murderous and reprehensible, atheistic revolutionaries & their numerous groups who are bent upon destroying this Republic and replacing it with their deranged dystopia of Marxism/Communism, and the fantastical and grotesque “democrat socialism” – an oxymoron if ever there was one – which they spew.
You succeeded in but taking another life of now a true martyr as “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of their righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven”.
You failed miserably in extinguishing the light & the determination of the movement that God Himself along with His millions of disciples continue to disseminate throughout this nation through the truths of the Bible and of the Judeo-Christian faith.
I remain a Christian.
I remain devoted to the principals of the U.S. Constitution and to the “Gospel truths” and tenets of the Bible and all of its righteousness.
I remain knowing that abortion & “assisted suicide” is nothing less than murder, that males can never become females and females can never become males, and that God most certainly exists and is the ultimate victor. Your refusal to accept that does not diminish reality.
I remain, very obviously, in being outspoken of what I believe in and will continue to make that even more readily apparent in the days to come for as long as the Lord, NOT those who pursue and enact pure evil, will allow.
I remain knowing that ultimately those who do pursue & enact such will lose not merely this war which you have initiated against the forever free people of this country, but that you will lose the ultimate gift which is that of your eternal soul now enveloped in darkness and potentially destined for perdition, as: “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it”.
I remain within this state and within this country knowing full well there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING you can ever do to alter my convictions, silence my/our collective free speech, or limit my/our good works, as: “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear Him who can destroy both body and soul in Heaven.”
I “fear” you not in the least. I instead openly mock your frail and feeble efforts to suppress Godliness and all that is good.
Charlie Kirk is dead because we let communists take a foothold in America. They knew they could not do it thru the working class of America as Marx wanted, so they did it by infiltrating our education system, warping race relations (Obama did that), our Judeo-Christian culture, our history. Getting people to believe men can be women and women men. Creating a Trans movement and letting men compete in women’s sports. Pumping our kids at an early age with Ritalin and other psychotropic drugs turning them into unhinged murderers. Creating the Climate Change hoax. Besmirching our Founding Fathers and founding documents. Calling the United States a democracy and using frases like “our democracy” when we know that the United Stats is a Constitutional Representative Republic. Calling us Nazi’s and Fascists when they are the ones that use Nazi and Fascist and Communist tactics. A Communist is a Socialist with a gun and now they are doing what Communists do. They kill people that do not agree with them. People who like Charlie Kirk were exposing them for what they are and what their tactics are. Don’t be fooled by what they call themselves like Bernie, “Im a Democratic Socialist” or I’m a Progressive. No, they are Communists that are pushing us towards Civil War. Senator Joseph McCarthy was right.

Is anyone else with a conscience feeling the same sick unease today as we all did 22 years ago? Back then it was a coordinated attack on the entire Country by radical moslems. Yesterday’s assassination has to be assumed to be part of the incessant attack by radical leftists, also directed at the soul of this Nation. On Sept. 11, 2001 there were pockets of malevolent people worldwide applauding the deed, and we have to assume there are mentally-twisted leftists cheering today after Charlie Kirk became a latter-day Martyr. May God hold dear and give comfort to his family and supporters and help deliver us all from from the ravages of this malignant enemy in our midst…

A true loss in many ways. President Trump said in response to this killing, “It is long past time for all Americans and the media to confront the fact that violence and murder are the tragic consequences of demonizing those with whom you disagree.” I could not agree more.

I’ve been reading VT Digger, Seven Days, and VT Public web sites off and on for a while now in order to at least be aware of a social perspective other than VDC. Fair and balanced as some might say. But what is curious, or telling, is not just the limited discussion of the Charlie Kirk assassination on these Vermont media outlets but that there is not a word, not a mention, not a letter to the editor, nothing referencing anyone even mentioning Charlie Kirk’s name. Perhaps I’ve missed something. But as of this morning’s scan (9-14-25) of the VT Digger, Seven Days, and VT Public web sites, nothing. Not a peep.
WCAX did a story. Just checked, nothing on Digger or 7D. Not sure about Vermont Public.
I think it just doesn’t register.
