WASHINGTON — The U.S. House voted Tuesday to condemn and denounce “socialism in all its forms,” approving the resolution 220-192 largely along party lines.
The Sept. 1 vote on H. Res. 1490 drew support from 211 Republicans, eight Democrats and one independent. No Republicans voted against the measure. Of the Democrats voting, 192 opposed it, while two voted present and 11 did not vote. Seven Republicans also did not vote.
Vermont Democratic Rep. Becca Balint voted against the resolution, according to the official House roll call. She has not referenced the vote on her social media.
The resolution is titled “Providing for the condemnation and denouncement of socialism in all its forms, and for other purposes.” It passed at 5:47 PM on a yea-and-nay vote. The resolution states that the House of Representatives:
- condemns and denounces socialism in all its forms, including the Democratic Socialists of America, and opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States;
- reaffirms its support for free, fair, and secure elections and calls for enactment of the SAVE America Act;
- reiterates that American elections are for American citizens only; and
- recommits itself to upholding the U.S. Constitution.
The House has considered similar measures in recent years. In November 2025, it approved a concurrent resolution declaring that Congress “denounces socialism in all its forms” and opposes implementation of socialist policies in the United States. Supporters of that measure linked socialism with authoritarian governments, economic deprivation and restrictions on individual freedom, while opponents argued the resolution used an overly broad definition that could be applied to longstanding federal programs.
Balint voted no on that resolution, too.
Critics of the resolution say it’s a pre-midterm election stunt, intended to divide and intimidate Democrats into either voting against the reso and thus angering the DSA wing of the party, or voting yes and angering voters who oppose socialism. Supporters say the rise of DSA influence in the Democrat Party makes it necessary to distinguish which Democrats support socialism from those who don’t. In the final vote, only eight Democrats voted for the resolution. They were all from Red states like Texas, Florida and North Carolina. Several other Democrats voted Present or were not present to vote.

Wow, this vote isn’t telling, it is screaming. Very clever to take this particular simple vote just before the mid-terms, isn’t it. Easy to see who has purchased the Democrats and it tells us they are putting all their money on the Democrat Socialist group. My poor Dad is rolling over in his grave. What has happened to his party of and for the working man? They may actually hear him screaming all the way to D.C. Well folks, for those of us who haven’t totally lost our minds, it is all up to us now. We need to clearly explain what it means to live under socialism. Most of the people I have heard talking think it is just free s*#t. I would have to agree with the s*#t part. Remember, in both high school and college they have been told repeatedly socialism is good, fair and treats everyone equally. The definition of insanity applies here (trying the socialism experiment time and again only to see it treat the average person terribly and be agreed upon as an utter failure).
Investigate every single one of them that voted no. They are being supported by foreign interests.
…and the few Dems who voted yes are now being looked at for “discipline” by party leadership… If that doesn’t show where the power hungry socialists are, what does?
And once again, Becca, the ‘boiled horse’, voted neigh.
Her socialist will never vote against the socialist or communist. What were you expecting?
At least Balint reminds of where she stands on the “I hate America” spectrum. Those who didn’t register a vote are no doubt part of the “silence equals violence” ideology, and their silence speaks volumes. Democrats overall have a dim sense of understanding the real and historic ramifications of socialism, including it’s death toll.
Amazing how, in the course of 160 years the democrat party has gone from promoting slavery, Jim Crow segregation laws and having the KKK as their militant wing to now becoming the party of communism-lite and anti-patriotism. It’s just as sad as seeing what has happened to Vermont over the past 60 years going from the most Republican voting state known for it’s Yankee self-determination to a welfare state that attracts vagrants, junkies and other assorted deadbeats from all over the country.
Don’t forget, Norman Rockwell. Most iconic paintings. There were no NGOs. Marxist never were the majority.

Not a fan of Balint but it is telling that the tRumpublicans are focused on this piece of legislation at this time. It is their attempt to divert voter attention away from the high cost of gas/ food/and just about everything, that the country is yet in another war with tRump having no idea how to get out of it, that tRump and his family are getting rich at the expense of all Americans, that many Americans cannot afford healthcare and on and on. History will not be kind to tRump and tRumpublicans.

You like to blame Trump for the price of gas and food. The costs of everything depend on the price of moving goods from one place to another. Under Trump the United States is now the world’s biggest oil producer. However, the last oil refinery was built 50 years ago. The last major grassroots oil refinery built in the United States was the Marathon refinery in Garyville, Louisiana, completed in 1976 and brought online in 1977. Commiefornia, one of the biggest states with the most cars and special blends of gas for different seasons, how many refineries have they allowed to be built in there? It wasn’t Trump that shut down drilling and fracking and stopped pipelines from being built. You know exactly who it was and who stops the refineries from being built.
And why would a Socialist condemn Socialism. Wouldn’t that only defeat what the Socialists are trying to do, overthrow our constitutional republic.
It’s time to bring back the House Un-American Activities Committee. It’s not that hard; all Congress has to do is pass a law that says taking your oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution is under the penalty of perjury. Then expel those members of Congress that violate that oath. Protect our Constitution. It is our only salvation.
I think we are fooling ourselves about socialism. It is a good thing our capitalism system works so well that we can donate our taxes for all the socialist programs we have. Socialism has been here.
