A homeless man with a lengthy history of arrests is being held without bail after Burlington police say he assaulted a woman, threatened a firefighter with a hunting knife, and resisted arrest Friday evening on North Avenue near Gosse Court.
Police identified the suspect as Wayne M. Butchino III, 29.
According to Burlington police, firefighters witnessed Butchino violently assaulting a woman while young children were present. When the ranking firefighter intervened, Butchino allegedly threatened him with a large hunting-style knife.
A passing motorist stopped to assist, and the two men were able to restrain Butchino for more than two minutes until Burlington officers arrived.
Police said Butchino continued to resist officers during the arrest. Investigators recovered the knife at the scene.
He was ordered held without bail pending a July 20 arraignment and is expected to face charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, domestic assault in the presence of a child, and resisting arrest. Final charges will be determined by the Chittenden County State’s Attorney’s Office.
The latest arrest follows several previous encounters with law enforcement.
In January 2025, Vermont State Police accused Butchino of driving under the influence after a rollover crash on Interstate 89 in Milton that seriously injured his passenger, who was ejected from the vehicle. Police said Butchino fled the crash scene on foot before being located nearby. Troopers also discovered he had three active arrest warrants, including one alleging first-degree aggravated domestic assault with a weapon. He was later charged with DUI resulting in serious bodily injury, grossly negligent operation, and leaving the scene of an accident.
In June 2023, state police charged Butchino after a domestic disturbance in St. George. Investigators alleged he assaulted a family member in the presence of children, interfered with the victim’s attempt to call 911, and damaged a parked vehicle before fleeing the scene. He was charged with domestic assault, interfering with access to emergency services, and unlawful mischief.
Earlier, in April 2021, Butchino was arrested after state police alleged he poured gasoline on his former partner’s vehicle in Fletcher and set it on fire. He was charged with third-degree arson and held on $1,000 bail following that arrest.

LIFE IN PRISON
This story is a textbook example of the failure of the state’s attorney office and our judicial system.
Is there a defensible reason why the story doesn’t itemize his prior convictions, incarceration for same, or which courts released him to wander the streets with a Bowie knife?
I understand his criminal history is somewhat varied to be kind of vague.
They are going to wait until he murders someone, then they may give
him 6 months.
Now that he is in jail, he is not homeless.
This is not a surprise. Look at the statistics of violence against women in VT. And yet for years the court advocate for domestic violence victims had been previously jailed for putting a child in their own family in the hospital….typical VT cronyism.
Criminals know where is the best place to get away with various types of crimes, and often they will travel there for ease of their criminal behavior.
One might assume the right wing tribe to not care about women’s safety, but the most disturbing aspect of VT is how the left wing tribe has reduced “women’s issues” to nothing beyond abortion, which is more of a convenience for rapists than any kind of boost for women.
Did anyone notice how the faux left of Vermont made not a peep about the Epstein files until Trump was elected?
Becca Balint did not care about women and girls. She only cared to use their suffering to take down a political opponent when it serves her agenda. Vile woman.
The right generally does not care about any women and children outside of the “ownership”. The left loves to appear like they care, but they are liars.
Toss a coin to decide who is worse.
I am surprised that any man stepped up to help the woman being assaulted. I have witnessed violence/abuse against women here while men and women alike watch, some with a glimmer of a smile or chuckles.
“Brave-little-state” much?
So, whoever these men were that stepped in to protect this woman should be publicly awarded. Erect statues of them at the Capital.
More of these guys, less of the troglodytes and rat-tat boys, please.

After watching the interview with the Samaritan traveling nurse who stopped to help, Leceadricke Young, it is obvious that he was not raised around here and so was spared the leftist culture of victimhood and defeatism that pervades Vermont. He specifically cited that he saw that a woman being victimized and that inspired his motivation to action. We used to call that chivalry, but that is probably on the bad word list in woke Vermont.
(I would like to give WCAX praise for covering a story of a citizen intervening in a violent crime but I have to wonder if they would have done the clarifying interview with Mr. Young if he was white.)
