Hartford CT man jailed after homicide bust

A Hartford, Connecticut man and two Vermont men have been arrested in connection with a pair of Sept. 7 early morning assaults in Caledonia County.

State Troopers stationed in St. Johnsbury were notified Tuesday Sept. 7 of an assault that had occurred earlier that morning in Barnet.

Police say several suspects entered the home of Matthew Goodell, 26, of Barnet and assaulted him with a weapon, causing significant injury. Goodell was treated for his injuries at a local hospital and released.

Several of the assailants were known to law enforcement, however several others were not and were known only by street names. It was learned that officers from the St. Johnsbury Police Department were working a case that involved the same suspects who were involved in the same type of incident in St. Johnsbury Village, also on 09/07/21.

Monday afternoon, detectives from the St. Johnsbury Barracks located a vehicle believed to be used by the suspects in St. Johnsbury Village. While police were watching the vehicle, several people attempted to leave the area in it and were detained. While continuing to watch the apartment that the suspects came out of, another previously unidentified male was seen leaving the area on foot.

This male had been identified by his street name, “Rico,” and was the main suspect in the investigation. While attempting to apprehend the male, a short foot pursuit ensued, after which time he was detained on the Portland Street Bridge.

During the arrest, traffic on the bridge was temporarily stopped, causing a short delay. Detectives were assisted in the apprehension of the suspects by members of the Vermont Drug Task Force and officers with the St. Johnsbury Police Department.

During processing, “Rico” was identified as Jashawn L. Hunter, age 33, of Hartford, Connecticut.  Hunter was charged with attempted second-degree homicide; assault and robbery; kidnapping; unlawful restraint; and false reports to a law enforcement officer. Also arrested as a result of the investigation was Vincent Schwab, age 38, of St. Johnsbury. He was charged with possession of a depressant. Kyle Goodell, age 23, of Barnet was arrested and charged with accessory/aiding in the commission of a felony.  Further charges are pending for those involved as well as further arrests of other suspects.

  1. I am glad to know that “foot pursuit” of felons have not been abandoned by all police departments, in favor of whatever more “progressive” (?) municipalities have adopted as being safer, and more in line with other policies (defunding, taking their firearms away, etc.) that are being foisted upon law enforcement to employ.
