A Georgia-Fairfax Republican legislator has gone public with her support for incumbent Jill Krowinski in the upcoming race for Speaker of the House.
Krowinski, a Democrat and former lobbyist for Planned Parenthood, faces a challenge from independent Rep. Laura Sibilia (Dover). The election will be held the first full day of the session, Wednesday January 8.
Bartley led the GOP end of the tri-partisan but unsuccessful charge to pass extensive Act 250 reform allowing more rural housing last year. Last session, she was a member of the House Committee on General and Housing.
Bartley said Sibilia was the principal reporter of the carbon tax and was a strong backer of the renewable energy standard and pupil weighting school funding formula.
She shared her endorsement of Krowinski on X yesterday. Her comments read in part:
“Many of us returning this biennium may share feelings of frustration from the last term. Yet, during those moments, I found myself in conversations with the Speaker, candidly expressing my concerns.
“While I didn’t always like the answers I received, I was consistently met with honesty, thoughtfulness, and a genuine willingness to hear me out.
“This is the kind of leadership that earns respect, even across differing perspectives. That’s why, on January 8th, I will vote for Jill Krowinski for Speaker of the House.”
Krowinski has denied repeated calls for a debate with Sibilia. Earlier this month, 18 members of the Democratic caucus voted against a resolution requiring Democrats only hold leadership positions. The vote was construed by some as internal support by a large minority for Sibilia.

Heads we lose, tails …. we lose . Run Gina, run !
Re: ‘Krowinski, a Democrat and former lobbyist for Planned Parenthood’… no conflict of interest there?
Unfortunately, supporting Sibilia, an expressed public education system socialist operating under the guise of ‘independent’, is tantamount to jumping from the pan into the fire.
Both women seeking the speaker’s position have demonstrated their capabilities as well as their elitism. Both have demonstrated their ignorance of the Vermont Constitution and their respective affirmations of office. Both are repugnant and have shown their allegiance to marxism and their donors. ms. bartley’s statements and endorsement seem antithetical to the party she claims to represent. Not a good start for this legislative session.
Just how many more years will the vermont voter continue their masochistic tendencies?
Laura Sibilia’s own legislative causes are hardly an enticement to Republican support, but they were not merely endorsed by, but were part of the Democratic super-majority agenda led by Jill Krowinski, so Krowinski offers no advantage on those subjects in choosing a Speaker. A key tenant of Sibilia’s campaign is that her personal priorities would no longer dictate in a role as Speaker: she is determined to foster inclusivity of all perspectives in setting an agenda, as well as to work to build consensus when possible rather than constantly butting heads with the governor.
In contrast, the concept that Krowinski is suddenly willing to listen, let alone work collaboratively, is the antithesis of her proven track record, where Republican voices were closed out. She allowed committees to meet during floor time to an unprecedented degree and often ran the floor with not much more than a quorum. Why even listen to points being made by Republicans when the vote outcome was pre-determined?
In my 22 years in the House, I have never seen as much disrespect for the values of an inclusive process. Yes, majority votes will ultimately rule, but building a culture of failure to listen to alternative perspectives first, is anathema to democracy.
Keeping the same Speaker in place after a campaign season that stressed the need to reign in super-majority excesses makes no sense at all. Republicans, joining with the significant subset of Democrats and Progressives who have identified disillusionment with her authoritarian leadership cabal and its consolidation of Chittenden County interests, now have the power to oust her.
Failure to take an opportunity to replace her disrespects the voice of voters who said that they are tired of the extremist agenda that she pressed for. Culture does not change if leadership does not change, and it is a culture change that is critical if Vermonters are to have an increased voice. Republicans now completely hold the cards on ensuring a change in House leadership.
(Donahue is a 22-year Republican, now an Independent, representing Northfield and Berlin.)
The more things change, the more they stay the same. With Paul Dame leading the faux-GOP pack and the RINO’s charging in behind him – apparently, NO, the republicans did NOT receive the mandate from the people. Vote. Them. All. Out.
Republicans really need to run their own candidate for Speaker. Period. The only way to demonstrate that you all “got” what the voters were saying on November 5 is to put up a candidate who will articulate a Republican agenda for turning around this state. Even if that candidate loses (and he/she probably will), it shows the voters what you stand for and who you’re fighting for. A vote for either Krowinski or Sibilia is a vote for the agenda the voters just rejected. It will not play well. Write in Jim Douglas. Do something!
Will you please let us know if we ever get any real republicans in the state of Vermont…
You yourself have diminished President Trump along with Phil Scott and the rest of the rhinos that we pretend are republicans
None of this is surprising to me when we have republicans that have supported the other side of the aisle…
A prime example is senator David weeks from proctor Vermont.
He sponsored a gun bill along with dixiers democrat senator from Bennington Vermont…
The people that we elect as republicans are a joke…
Until we have a real movement in the state of Vermont and we elect real republicans it’s going to be more of the same old same old…
How many republicans violated the Republican party rules in past elections and nothing is done about it
We even consider electing candidates who lie to us to represent us in office..
Just look at Phil Scott still supporting Harris and the damage that has been done to our United States of America…
Every time I mention that traitor’s name throw up comes into my mouth…
It’s disgraceful what has been done to our republican party from out-of-staters and even some of the locals.
Unless we wake up soon in the state of Vermont we will no longer have a steak worth living in..
I used to be so proud to mention that I lived in the state of Vermont now I hang my head in shame when someone mentions what was once a beautiful little state
And now you understand why the Vermont GOP is so pathetic, RINOs from the top down, yes I mean Flip Flop Phil ………………. Wake up, people !!
You taxpayers are not allowed to play in the sandbox. Your job is to supply and pay for the sand. QUESTION. Do you have to get strip searched to get into the statehouse???????????????????
The Republican caucus needs to stay out of the Democrat’s race and let them own the misery that they have put on working Vermonters. They created this mess, they own it.
Republicans need to run a candidate for Speaker, period! “We The People,” want better, we need leadership, not gamesmanship.
Rep. Jill Krowinski reminds me of Katie Hobbs (Gov of AZ.) Is it a coincidence some top Vermont Dem/Progs have doppelgangers in other States holding top jobs? They all speak the same, implement the same policies, feed from the same hog troughs, have the same “super nerd” bespectacled appearance, and dress like dowdy doll wallflowers. Low vibrational, but dangerously calculative and robot-like. Did Soros produce a harem of Stepford Wives – gender inclusive, of course?
Why do you attack people personally? You should keep your insulting opinions of what a person looks like to yourself.
Well Brian, I’ve listened to a number of strangers standing at podiums painting me and fellow citizens with a wide brush, implying I’m a racist, I’m a homophobe, I’m priviledged due to my skin color (which I’m still awaiting clues or instructions how to utilize such privledge – perhaps because I don’t have the secret banker lingo or
ethnicity to obtain interest free loans as divulged by a lawyer of the appropriate lineage?) I credit my attitude just the same as Jesus when he entered the Temple with a fashioned whip and righteous anger. He wasn’t so cool, calm, collected or passive after so much corruption and fraud unfolded before his very eyes was he? There are Words in the Bible that explain more – lays out rather clearly what is happening and why.
What is Bartley doing? Does she think she will get a better assignment if she sides with the dem/prog candidate? The Republicans need to publicly pick a REPUBLICAN speaker period! Short of that you’re a tool for the left. Pick someone from your party and stand behind them. That is why your there, not to pander and pucker for the other team. How do you ever set your agenda publicly if you’re voting for the other team?
Anne Donahue for Speaker of the House would be the best choice.
The Republicans need to put someone up. Laura and Jill are the worst of the worst. ANYONE is better than these two clowns.
Any suggestions, Karen?
