GOP adds 21 write-in, party nominees, has 96 House candidates for Nov. 5

By Guy Page

In addition to the candidates selected in the August 13 primary, the Vermont Republicans have added 21 candidates to the House of Representatives by write-in or expected party nomination, GOP State Chair Paul Dame announced yesterday.

With the addition of 21 new House candidates, this brings the total of Vermont Republicans running for House to a near high of 96 candidates.

State law allows parties to nominate candidates for seats in which there were no candidates on the primary ballot. Also, candidates who secure enough write-in votes may be added to the November 5 general election ballot.

The write-in/expected party nominees are:

Addison 3, Joe Baker

Bennington 1, Bruce Busa

Caledonia-Essex, Deborah Dolgin

Chittenden 6, Deb Mayfield

Chittenden 19, Spencer Sherman

Chittenden 20, Joshua Cropp

Franklin 3, Joe Luneau

Lamoille 3, Paul Sciortino

Lamoille-Washington, Charles Burnham

Lamoille Washington, Nick Lopez

Rutland 6, Cindy Laskevich

Rutland 7, Chris Keyser

Rutland 9, Todd Neilsen

Washington 3, Michael Boutin

Windham 4, Lynne Wilkins

Windham 5, Cathy VanSickle

Windham 6, Pam Baker

Windsor 3, Keith Stern

Windsor 5, Steven Sadonis

Windsor 6, Joe Trottier

Windsor 6, Patrick Danaher

“I haven’t seen this kind of excitement and energy from Vermont Republicans since I won my own race back in 2014,” Dame said. “By competing in more districts, it gives us a better chance to sustain the Governor’s veto in either the House or the Senate. If we win just 52% of our House races, we can give Gov. Phil Scott the backstop he needs to stop the kinds of additional taxes Democrats are talking about already.”

The Republican surge comes after what Dame called “a very disappointing Primary night for moderates on the Democratic ticket.”

Further-Left progressives ran the table in Democratic primaries, beating everyone they challenged, Dame said – continuing a trend from the 2022 election as well.

“I think a lot of voters who are looking to cut back on some of the taxes and fees realized that the approach of working through the Democratic party to just make it “less bad” was a failed strategy,” Dame said. “Meanwhile moderates like Gov. Phil Scott and Sen. John Rogers prove that common sense candidates have a prominent place in the Vermont Republican Party for anyone who wants to help them stop the massive tax increases.”

  1. Great going as always, VT GOP!!!

Write-in candidacies are almost always wildly successful! Plus, very little $$$ needs to be expended on their “campaigns”. Yay!

You can’t get GOP’ers motivated enough to get off their duffs to check off a few boxes, but they’re going to recall full & properly spelled names of write-ins.

    Awesome strategy.

  2. vermont is run by all party zoo masters//// you had better plant a larger garden and load up on more firewood////

    • Pretty sound advice there…….some others are planting corn this week, expecting to get a bumper crop by fall, I think they are sorely misguided. You have to sow and plant way ahead of time.

Our course for the next two years has been set. After the election, it will be time to plan for the next growing season. Hopefully we have some crop rotation.

We need to get rid of the round up, it’s really not healthy. Get some organic growth, healthy for everyone in this astro turf state.

    • Vermont is at the end of its life cycle, thanks to parasites known as planning and development engineers. I’m afraid its too late for a garden to offset the damage already inflicted.
For the last 60 years the only people thriving have been the central planners and engineers, “the parasites”. They keep planning for resiliency and weakening the host, what will sustain them, when the host is dead?

  3. Vermont GOP, this is a good start, probably a little late but it’s a start, the only way to change the political landscape is to start picking up seats, these write-in candidates should be front & center every day, get their names out, so they are ingrained in our minds for election day, maybe conservatives that have given up will stand up and vote to save the state !!

Places like Chittenden County ” Burlington ” are a lost cause for any type of GOP conservatism, the liberals have turned the ” Queen City ” into a cesspool and until they get flushed out it’s a dying city, and things won’t change until that happens.

Good luck to all the candidates, you’ll need it.

    • This is cannon fodder. It’s rah rah feel good thing they do every election.

They couldn’t get well known people to win their primaries with support from the most popular governor on the planet. the most popular governor in an entirely dominated marxist political climate…..so if all the marxists love him…..then what does that make him a best friend of?

We are being played, again. Will we ever learn?

  4. Candidates should not overlook Front Porch Forum as a way to communicate with voters. Its free, widely read, and published almost daily. Incumbents can be questioned about their positions on particular issues such as the pending vote on the Clean Heat Standard, the lawsuit filed against the state thanks to the Global Warming Solutions act, or how to control education property tax spending. Challengers can propose solutions to these issues even if incumbents fail to respond.

    • Steve, Front Porch Forum is not conducive to conservative commentary or conservative candidate recommendations. My FPF account was cancelled without notice or explanation. I did nothing to breach the FPF rules and was ignored when I asked for an explanation. And, apparently, my experience is not unique. Unfortunately, progressive democrats frequent FPF, not VDC. FPF is nothing more than a ‘mutual admiration society’. Conservative views are not welcome.

    • They likely won’t let someone with “bad think” post. FPF is completely intolerant of any posts it may deem conservative in nature. This is how marxist communists role.

    • Mr Thurston,
Conservatives are extremely limited in their use of FPF. I have been threatened with the closure of my account for simple saying that science is not “settled” as at one time, the world thought the Earth was flat and the Sun revolved around the Earth and that Four Humors made the body. That was settled science at one time. And that we should remain open to new data, new information.
Abby Crosby had hers closed without forewarning. Because she dared to contradict the very things you say we should discuss.
I have read other commenters state we should sue FPF. Clearly, they don’t know the first thing about suing someone. Firstly, who has the 6-10 grand in lawyer’s fees to do that? Would you spend that much money fighting FPF? I can’t. Then you have to find a lawyer willing to go to court in this state against them. Good luck.
      Easy to say, sue them.
Literally, VDC is the ONLY place conservative people have of getting their ideas and questions out there. And we are preaching to the choir. We have very little chance of actually engaging the citizens in the msm here in Vermont. Our only avenue is knocking on doors. Which I will start doing next week. As many as I can do every day.

  5. Question for the VTGOP officials.

Did these write-in candidates win their primaries and, if so, will their names appear on the November ballot?

Are the names listed above as they appear on the certified voter checklist that the town clerk will recognize and deem acceptable?

Are there any requirements for the write-in candidate’s consent?

Are write-in candidates required to file ‘disclosure forms’ with the Sec. of State, Town Clerk, or other authority?

Re: § 2587. Rules for counting votes
    (A) On each tally sheet, the counters shall add together the names of candidates that are clearly the same person, even though a nickname or last name is used.
    (B) (B) Names of fictitious or deceased persons shall not be listed and shall be recorded on the tally sheet as a blank vote.

What leeway does the Town Clerk have in determining whether a write-in vote is for someone with a legitimate ‘nickname’ or a ‘fictitious’ person?

    • Mr. Eshelman,
To get on the ballot the “normal” way, one needed to start in April/May and get a petition signed. They needed 50 signatures. Write in candidates needed 25 people to write in their name on the primary ballot.
All the names on the list above “won” the right to have their name printed on the ballot for November because 25 or more people successfully wrote the correct name in the correct place.
I do not believe the designated “town” clerk for the District is required to check their name against a voter checklist. That being said, they “certify” the result and send the certificate to both the individual and the Secretary of State.
The candidate must sign a Consent form and send that along with a financial statement to the SOS.
I cannot answer the last question and I suggest you reach out to your own town clerk to ask them. They might have the answer.

    • Pam: My main concern was being able to write-in a name correctly to be sure it would be counted. If the names listed above won their primaries as write-in candidates, they will be printed on the November ballot. But if a write-in candidate runs in the November election, the name must be entered in a form acceptable to the Town Clerk and local election officials. And, according to the election handbook (see link below) there is ‘wiggle-room’ for these officials to discount a write-in candidate.

      https://outside.vermont.gov/dept/sos/Elections%20Division/election%20info%20and%20resources/election%20law/title-17.pdf

But thank you for clarifying that the names listed above will be printed on the official November ballots. For them (and for you), a vote for you will not have to be an actual ‘write-in’. You’ve been there and done that. So, best of luck to you. If I lived in your district, you would most certainly have my vote.

  6. When are people going to wake up. There is no Republican Party in VT. I have not seen one article on VDC where Paul Dame and Phil (the Phony) Scott are supporting Trump for president so real conservatives and don’t want to run, and the write ins are nothing more than people trying to plug the holes in the leaking VT Republican Party dike. Get ready for more governor veto overrides.

The Jellyfish should replace the Elephant as the logo for the Vermont Republican Party. It fits perfectly, spineless, brainless, heartless, eats its own, craps thru its mouth and is full of poison.

    • Mr. Vitolanese,
I always enjoy your comments and insights here on VDC. I have agreed with you many times over the last few years.
I don’t necessarily disagree with you here, but I will tell you that I am not a “plug the holes” candidate. I have a very full plate caring for my wheelchair bound sister and my mother who now requires supervision. So much so that I couldn’t work as a nurse any longer.
But I also couldn’t stand by and watch a progressive be the only candidate for my district run and win by default. I have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning. But by GOD, I will not go gently into that good night. I may have decided at the 11th hour to run, but I will do my best to get the word out. I will tolerate the hate that will come my way as I knock on doors and try to forgive them when they say and do what they will.
I am asking you, to accept your disappointment with the GOP, put it aside and help us. Help us. Fight with your last breath.
Do I sound like a naive, idealistic teen… probably. But it doesn’t make it any less true. I have fought with myself over the last few years. Fought the mindset you write about.
I am asking ALL of you to pull up your big boy/girl drawers and roll up your sleeves and let’s get this DONE.

  7. jamesvitolanese,

listen to Pam Baker. She is ready to change her life and represent all Vermonters while caring for her family. I am a Democrat working to get Addison County Republican Senate candidate Steven Heffernan elected.

He could be the eighth Republican Senator to support Governor Scott’s vetoes. We need three more to sustain those vetoes. That will give the Republican legislators power over the super-majority Chairmen bringing bad legislation to the floor. The Governor and his 11 Republican Senators can force those Chairs to negotiate a bi-partisan solution that would avoid a veto.

Move heaven and earth to get those candidates elected. They can right our Ship of State.

  8. So, the VTGOP Chairman and Republican Governor were openly hoping for “moderate Democrats” then somehow stir up 21 write ins for the GOP post-primary? Did 21 folks change out of their costume or are they friends of friends, co-workers, associates, in-laws, partners, future or current board/commission/task force members?

Sorry, several months have passed as well as “gawd awful” legislation and policies also passed since 2020. The VTGOP spent most of that time pointing fingers at the Dem/Progs as well as badmouthing and subverting the MAGA supporters. All smells to me like freshly sprayed skunk whizz a few months before a major election cycle.

Stick a fork in it – the tomfoolery from both sides of the fence has turned Vermont and the United States into a tailspin. Too late and many, many petro dollars short. I suppose that be the problem – they see it coming clearly and continue to chicken dance their way out while preparing to flee to parts unknown.

By the way, why are National Guardsmen from Florida and Texas in the region? Asking for a friend.

    • Ms Casey, I generally agree with you. But I take exception to being labeled as “folks change out of their costume or are they friends of friends, co-workers, associates, in-laws, partners, future or current board/commission/task force members?”
And I wrote sincerely above in reply to Mr. Vitolanese. As I am doing here with you.
I am just exactly who I say I am. I am deeply flawed and pretty idealistic. I think I can make a tiny difference. If only to inspire someone else to do the same or similar. I just know that not one single person in my district stood up to run against Emily Carris-Duncan. And I prayed someone would. I literally, do not know how I am going to provide personal care for my sister from January to May. She will have to come with me. I will have to find w/c accommodations. I am looking for adult day care who can support her needs while I’m in Montpelier.
I do NOT want to be a politician. I despise them. I am a citizen doing my civic duty. Because someone MUST.
Laugh at or scorn me if you will. That’s okay. I’m sure I’ll hear worse out in the community. Just don’t let them win. Don’t let them divide us, spiritually defeat us. We can do this. We can. I know we can. And if we can’t, we’ll go down swinging.

    • Pam, I respect your opinions, I empathize with the situation concerning your sister, I applaud your efforts to change the minds of the reprobates, and I join you in praying for positive changes and outcomes for Vermont.

This war has nothing to do with American politics at all. It is a global war that is simply good v. evil. Globalists want a one world government, one world religion, one body having control and power over every issue, every person, in every country. The crown jewel of this war is taking down the United States of America and selling out every citizen to a cruel, ruthless, diabolical, evil entity. We are in the fight for all the marbles, make no mistake on that fact. The puppets running Vermont are simply not grasping the concept of they too will be immediately disposed of once their services are no longer needed.

Sadly, many in Vermont still believe in the safe bubble effect – somehow what is going on in Philadelphia or Los Angeles won’t happen here. It is happening here and it’s going get a lot darker and a lot worse than what we see now. It is high time that some of these “leaders” fall upon their swords and tell the Truth for once. They are lost in the ether for their love of money and covering up criminal conduct, either their own or that of they’re associates.

Above all, this is about children. The missing children, the exploited children, the trafficked children. Do you see how they treat children? All children? There is a mobile abortion clinic sitting blocks away from the DNC convention! Reprehensible! How many gun crimes involved children vs. how many children’s lives snuffed out by Planned Parenthood in their ghoulish, evil mobile killing machine?

Crimes against humanity shall not stand. God will not be mocked! I too am only one voice. I will raise it in righteous indignation and condemn them all to Hell with the authority God installed inside me at conception. People need to rise up against evil or get swallowed up into it. There are no other options at this juncture.

      .

  9. I too want to see the VT GOP do well this election cycle. If anyone sees any gov, house or senate debates scheduled anywhere, televised or not, please make certain that Guy/Paul at VDC has the date, time and location please. I don’t frequent FPF because they are not GOP friendly but they might have any debates……everyone should attend. I would love to ask the governor why he supports transgender surgery on minors and why do tampons need to be supplied in the boys bathroom’s?

  10. I hope that Larry Hart Jr. will dislodge Mark MacDonald from his senate seat in Orange. You know, Mark MacDonald from Williamstown that said, “If it’s cold and you haven’t enough heat, just put on another blanket”. Oh please Larry, I’ll go anywhere to watch you debate him!!!
