Good Samaritans rescue kayakers

A calm afternoon on Lake Willoughby turned into a scene of distress and quick action Sunday as two kayakers found themselves in trouble, prompting swift response from the public and local authorities.

Vermont State Police and EMS responded to the lake in Westmore after receiving several 911 calls from concerned citizens at around 4:15 p.m September 24.

Dania Dubon, 23, and Kevin Dubon, 19, had capsized their kayak in the middle of the lake, calling out for help and attracting the attention of nearby individuals.

A private vessel in the vicinity was the first to respond, initiating a rescue operation. With the combined efforts of the boat’s occupants, first responders, and members of the public, both were safely brought back to shore.

Following the incident, EMS evaluated both individuals as a precaution. No injuries were reported, and everyone involved was accounted for.

The Vermont State Police extended their thanks to the quick-thinking and vigilant members of the public whose involvement was instrumental in the successful rescue of the kayakers.

Crash, car fire in Colchester – A 59-year-old woman from Essex Junction was involved in a single-vehicle crash in Colchester today.

Authorities say they were notified of a vehicle fire on I-89 north at around 4:45 p.m.

Troopers arrived on the scene and located the Kia Sorento with the fire departments actively extinguishing the vehicle fire.

The driver, identified as Melanie Trudo, was able to safely exit the vehicle and there were no reported injuries.

The right lane of the interstate was shut down for about two hours as crews worked the scene.
