ST. ALBANS — A Franklin County man apparently took his own life by having an Amtak train run over him this morning on Lake Street in St. Albans, officials said.
Vermont News First is not providing his name as police attempt to notify next of kin.
Police, fire and rescue were called to the scene about 9:15 a.m. for a report of a man had walked into a train near a railroad crossing on Lake Street.
Police Chief Moe Lamothe said first responders found the pedestrian deceased.
The train, which did not realize there had been a collision with a pedestrian, continued traveling south on the railroad tracks, the chief said.
It eventually stopped after being notified.
Lamothe reported the following:
Preliminary investigation revealed the train had just left the St. Albans station. As it crossed Lake Street, the street crossing bars were down. The male approached the crossing from the west, walking east, when he collided with the train.
Franklin County State’s Attorney Bram Kranichfeld was spotted walking from the Vermont Superior Court House down Lake Street to the scene to confer with police, Vermont News First was told.
The railroad crossing is near Food City at 101 Lake Street.
Traffic in the area was disrupted.
Police said this is an ongoing investigation and no other information was available this morning.
