Fellow governor stumps for Trump while Scott looks on

As Gov. Phil Scott looked on, North Dakota Governor and reported VP candidate Doug Burgum effusively praised 2024 GOP presumptive nominee Donald Trump at the Vermont State GOP convention Saturday, May 18 in South Burlington. 

Scott is an outspoken Trump foe. At his press conference this week, Gov. Scott said he wouldn’t support a Trump ticket even if his good friend Doug Burgum is the VP pick. Scott said he voted for Joe Biden over Trump because Trump (among other shortcomings he cites) is too divisive.

Lots of chatter about Burgum for VP

Burgum recently visited Trump’s Florida home of Mir-A-Lago recently and also spoke glowingly of Trump outside the New York courtroom where Trump faces charges. 

Burgum spoke at great length Saturday in praise of Trump, using the phrase “Make America Great Again” and referring to “Hollywood elites.” 

After his strongly pro-Trump speech, VDC asked Burgum if he’s a VP candidate. 

Burgum first said Trump himself says the list of potential candidates is long. He said he’s not actively soliciting the job – unlike others.

Then Burgum said he would accept any job offer from the president that could make a strong positive difference – and that during Trump’s first term, the VP was given important duties. 

During Burgum’s exhortation to support Trump, Scott stood quietly at the back of the room, accompanied by former Caledonia County state senator Joe Benning. As he was leaving the room, VDC asked him about Burgum’s strong pro-Trump words.

“I don’t agree with everything he says, but he’s still my friend,” Scott said. He said he agrees with Burgum on energy issues and border protection.

Border protection? Phil Scott?

Yes indeed, Scott assured. He believes the U.S. border should be inviolate and that both Democrats and Republicans in Congress have failed to take action. (VDC regrets we failed to ask him for specific policy suggestions – we’ll follow up with him.)

  1. Border protection? Phil Scott? Talk about cognitive dissonance.

    So, Scott ‘believes the U.S. border should be inviolate and that both Democrats and Republicans in Congress have failed to take action’? And VDC regrets it failed to ask him for specific policy suggestions?

    No follow-up necessary. VDC should have mentioned that the Republicans have NOT failed to take action. How convenient of everyone (including Phil Scott and VDC) to ignore the fact that the U.S. House passed and forwarded H.R. 2, known as the “Secure the Border Act”, more than a year ago. And while Chuck Schumer refused to consider it, everyone else conveniently ignores the effort.

    • The only pledge Phil ever made was “no new gun laws in Vt”, we all know how that went. He uses the word divisive, yes today we have many divisive issues, and if he doesn’t stand for morality ,he’s nothing more than a sock puppet. In Vt we’ve had contentious issue right here at home, in Randolph, he never supported the the girls transgender locker room issue, title IX, and stood idly by as courts awarded the the girls father a settlement against the school district, he obviously doesn’t stand for real woman’s rights either. Now immigration is too divisive, I made the mistake more than once to vote for him, never again. He’s a coward and a liar and he needs to be fired!

    • Republicans and Democrats put forward a border bill in February that had widespread bipartisan support and was sure to pass. Trump ordered it killed and the brainless GOP allowed it.

      Apparently, the February 2024 border bill was not so sure to pass – because it didn’t.

      Why did the Senate version fail?

      Because the bill contains a phony “border emergency authority” that allows about 1.3 million known illegal aliens annually—and therefore likely several million more unknown.

      It cripples its own “border emergency authority” by a variety of mechanisms:
      – allowing any immigration officer to unilaterally and unreviewably exempt any number of illegal aliens from the count triggering the authority.
      – exempting illegal aliens from “noncontiguous countries” from the count triggering the authority.
      – effectively sunsetting itself across three years through an arbitrary limitation on the number of days per year the emergency may be invoked.
      – allowing the president to unilaterally and unreviewably suspend any invocation of a border emergency.

      In addition, the bill:
      – gives more than $2.3 billion to NGOs that have, wittingly or not, abetted the border crisis and the human-trafficking cartels behind it.
      – fails to show any understanding of the Mexican state-cartel nexus that has created the invasion at our southern border.
      – provides funding for diplomatic activities on behalf of Ukraine and Israel, but not on behalf of the United States’ own border crisis.
      – provides hundreds of millions of dollars in unaccountable and discretionary funding for President Biden to give to corrupt foreign governments that are complicit in the border crisis.
      – provides a blank check for the Biden Administration’s DHS Secretary to release illegal aliens upon declaration of an intent to seek asylum — dropping a requirement for an actual asylum claim.
      – provides no meaningful oversight for illegal aliens who are released into the United States.
      – purports to shorten the broken asylum-claims system but does not actually reform it.

      And yes, Trump recognized these shortfalls, as did the other Senate Republicans who managed to stop it.

      … in case you forgot that too.

Calling Trump’s resort ‘Mir-a-Lago,” rather than the correct ‘Mar-a-Lago’ is appropriate as it makes a connection to the Russian Mir space station and to the name for a self-governing community of Russian peasants, both of which ideas are orbiting mighty close to the Vermont GOPs beloved Gov. Scott. Thanks for drawing that connection.

    Too divisive? Trump is so divisive that Blacks and Hispanics are leaving the Commiecrat party in droves to vote for Trump.

He is the perfect chameleon puppet picked by the super-majority Commiecrats of Vermont to be their figurehead pretending to veto their communist agenda knowing full well that that veto can be overridden at any time.   5. I will retract my moniker of Governor Empty Suit and refer to him now as Governor Wind Sock – whichever GOP celebrity blows into town, he’ll swirl to and fro for brownie points and advisement. Trump has his number from the COVID days as does the State Department, military brass, and the Chinese consolate. The Feds know all about the Governor’s Association meetings and the dirty deals done not so cheap. The likes of Burgam, Kemp, Abbott, Desantis, Huckabee-Sanders, Youngkin, Justice, Ivey, Sununu, Dewine, Noem – you can determine clearly who are the wolves and who genuinely is defending the USA and the American people. All through their actions, not their empty platitudes. Some do have a pair, some do not.

  6. Since at this moment we don’t have a Republican who will dominate Scott in November, we are stuck with a choice between Scott and Dean. With Dean we know what we are getting. We might not like it or him much, but he won’t surprise us. Scott on the other hand is not now or has ever been a real conservative. An Independent with conservative views is fine as not all Republican’s are. Scott is a disappointment as he says one thing, and votes for another, or doesn’t bother to vote (veto) at all. To many times we have hopped that he would grow a spine, only to be disappointed.
    Come November I am not sure Dean would be any worse, because we would not bother to hope for a conservative vote. Our state (if you are a real Vermonter as I am) is lost ! Apart from the intervention of God, every year will be worse than the year before. Every year going forward our taxes will increase (not decrease). Sooner or later every major business in Vermont will pack up and move to a state with less intrusion, less taxes, cheaper electricity, and no extra fees on using fossil fuels. Vermont likes to be first, and they will again be first to have the majority of the state in lower income / poverty status. For some, the homeless will be living better because the state is paying them to be homeless.

    • There is a conservative governor candidate but people don’t know him because no news media will even talk to or about him. He is a real conservative. Kevin Hoyt is his name. Like Trump, he is not a politician like the other people that are ruining our country and our state into the ground.. Check him out on Grassroot Network on Rumble. At least he has a plan to fix the corruption in our state and should be looked at by all that are sick of the way our state is being led to the slaughter. How much harm could he do? What we have now is destroying our beloved country and state. Scott needs to change his party so a real republican can run.

    • Oddly enough, Dean was a Park Avenue Democrat. Trump was from Queens and was a blue-dog Democrat who built up Manhattan. Bernie Sanders was a Brooklyn community organizer. Between the three, their economic policies were moderate to centerist. Bernie sold out to the far left and Hillary, Dean got punked by Hillary, Obummer, and the DNC dirty politics, and Trump took the road he had the best chance to beat Hillary and the DNC by switching to the floundering GOP. If we are to vote on policies, particularly economics, Dean (if he hasn’t entirely sold his soul to the DNC and Satan) could not do as much damage as Scott has in a shorter stint. Dean may have enough clout to whip the VTDNC into submission and do the right thing when needed the most. He isn’t saying much – perhaps there is another straw drawing at the next cocktail party to get the script right. We are in dire straits nonetheless.

    • I am also a born and raised Vermonter and conservative. This is not the state I grew up in. Real Vermonters are leaving in droves because Vermont has been taken over by outsiders. I agree with all you said and sadly will be leaving Vermont to retire soon; in a state that has a legislature/governor that represents the majority instead of their own corrupt marixist agenda. This state has been lost to major league corruption. Everyone has rights, but just because certain people have strange ways doesn’t give them a right to be treated special. I. E. LGBTQASDREBHUYTR🙄can you imagine having a heterosexual month. No wait that would be called racist. 😡Nothing makes sense anymore 😭

  10. My email today to Phil Scott today: Please do something to support conservatives and conservative causes in Vermont. Stop with this childish obvious hatred of Trump. You are killing we in rural Vermont. You need to start acting like a Republican. Start supporting our causes. You are embarrassing with your open borders, appointments of liberals/progressives, and again your hatred of President Trump. You need to get off this bandwagon. Remember we in rural Vermont. We largely support Trump. You had an opportunity to shine with Burgum in the State. You wasted it. Burlington and Montpelier are not the best examples of Vermont. Close our northern border, support Republicans. Appoint only Republicans/Conservatives. It’s time to shape up or ship out. Vermont is such a mess. You can begin to fix the mess!

  11. Phil Scott is a disgrace to Vermont, I would say he’s a disgrace to the Vermont Republican party but the Vermont GOP thinks he walks on water……………..

    I am a 73-year-old Conservative Vermonter, I just don’t see it, as the party including the Governor is tainted, they just want to get along even when it is blatantly wrong, that’s pretty pathetic.

    I hope I’m wrong and the GOP shows me that they will fight and win !! as there is plenty of data showing the progressive nonsense ………….. but I just don’t see it.

    How about a balanced budget, no new bill until the budget is balanced then we can see who’s destroying the state !!
