Evslin: Republicans fell for Democrat’s brilliant (unintentional) head fake

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Now Rs have the wrong player at bat.

by Tom Evslin

Year-ago polls said that lots of Republican could beat Biden but that Biden had his best chance if Trump was his opponent. Also looked like Trump’s best chance was against Biden. The Ds decided to anoint Biden, who had moved to the Bernie-left on many issues, and did all they could to spare him the effort, risk, and exposures of a competitive primary. Legal moves against Trump, some clearly political, were a win-win for the Ds because they strengthened Trump in the Republican primaries while potentially weakening him in the general election. Rs, angered by the lawfare and the arrogance of the woke left, took the bait and nominated Trump, believing that his opponent would be beatable Biden.

And then there was the debate. Ds hadn’t had their convention so they still had time for a roster change. Joe, thank you for your service in the last four innings. Unfortunately the bases are loaded and we can’t risk you giving up the big one. We’re bringing in Kamala from the bullpen.

Trump twists himself in a pretzel trying to hit her first pitch. Predictably, he disputes the umpire’s call. She looks a lot better than when she came up from the minor leagues four years ago. She’s grinning at him from the plate and he’s frowning furiously back. Kamala then throws ball one to the left of the plate because she feels she needs support from the left of her party.

The game has changed but it’s hardly over. Neither candidate has made a solid move to the reasonable center although Trump has changed on abortion and Kamala has said she won’t ban fracking or cut off arms to Israel. Rs don’t have any path to changing their batter.  Kamala, especially after her concession to the left, has room to move solidly towards the center.  She could:

  1. Make clear that border enforcement is necessary and a goal.
  2. Support relatively clean American extraction of fossil fuels (including pipelines) to bloodlessly crush the petro economies of Russia and Iran and aid the economies of the US and our European allies.
  3. Praise the necessary Ukrainian incursion into Russia with American weapons; “wars are over when the good guys win”. Trump is vulnerable on Putinphilia.
  4. Give a harsh warning to Iran that they will be attacked when their proxies attack US troops or Israel.

I’m not voting until election day. The game is changing too fast.

  1. Mr. Evslin’s musing seem more geared to vtdigger than VDC readers- and as he opines from his isolated and insulated worldview, he fails to consider or remember that harris’ pick for VP is a vociferous liar, staunch advocate for marxism(socialism) and was one of the extreme authoritarian governors during the covid debacle. harris herself is a marxist, whom has done less than nothing to justify her current position as vp.
I would remind mr. evslin that harris has had 42 months to enact or even speak to the issues raised in evslin’s rant- not even as “border czar”, a position given her and now refuted by her.
There will be no move to the middle by harris, her controllers shall not allow it.
Perhaps the players changed in this game, but the game has not. After 42 months-
Harris is still a nothing and has done nothing constructive- backed by the ultimate gamesmanship by the ultimate gamesman, barakobama. Harris will, if elected unburden us of what has been- namely our constitutional republic and freedoms-
Perhaps that’s the way Evslin wants it.

  2. Trump has not changed his position on abortion. He has always been a realist about the issue and has admonished Republicans on it. And Trump is already where Evslin would like Kamala to be on fracking, and he is already a realist about energy in general. As for Russophobia and its proxy war in Ukraine, that is not what most Americans want. What Evslin calls the center is business-as-usual neoliberalism/neoconservatism, the heedless machine of the Reagan/Clinton/Bush/Obama… tag team. Evslin wants Harris to run against herself, which she does indeed appear to be doing. It’s an obvious sham. Trump is running on his record, and endless war, including against the American worker and taxpayer, is not part of it. That does not please Tom Evslin, and that’s probably a good thing.

  3. The “brilliant… head fake” intentional or not is nothing more than a slap in the face of Dem primary voters. But then Dems have always had nothing but contempt for their base.

Also, your first two policy proposals would be laughable positions for Dems to take given that they opened our borders wider than ever, closed down oil pipelines and banned drilling. All while Kamala was VP.

The war mongering proposals are in line with Dem current policies. They are extremely dangerous, though.

  4. Please vote early. They are already saying election day will be “hacked”. Vote as early as you can. Are you really on the fence? The U.S. is in dire straights today thanks to the policies of the current administration and Kamala is essentially the incumbent. Trump 2024.

  5. -If you don’t like millions of Venezuelan immigrants it’s probably a bad idea to impose crippling sanctions on that country. Also, having that be your primary issue as a Vermonter just means you consume too much media.

-America is pumping more oil now than ever before because corporations dictate policy. I don’t think you have to worry about this one

-Most Americans do not want to join Israel in its wars and slaughters and no one is voting based on Ukraine aid.

  6. She could move to the four positions you list during the campaign, but do you really think she would follow through if elected?

  7. If one is a fan of the Twilight Zone series, this piece reads like a prelude to the episode we are living through now. Any day now, I do expect Rod Serling to address the nation.

“She looks a lot better than when she came up from the minor leagues four years ago.” The US Senate is the minor leagues? Don’t tell Bernie and Peter they’re in the “minor league” Considering the “major league” bank roll they’ve made from “representing” the State of Vermont while colluding with foreign interests and mega-corp CEOs (those stock options are invaluable!)

Perhaps Mr. Evslin watches too much mainscream[sic] media or reads the Washington Compost[sic] or New York (end)Times believing it is factual journalism. Perhaps too many boosters or fear that this country could actually turn around rather than implode into it’s own cellar hole. Who is minding the USA store these days or over the past four years? Anyone?

If there actually is a selection event on November 5th, the concensus is there will be much chaos and calamity to unfold in the 83 days remaining. After seeing what has unfolded thus far, the odds are very good for more targetted mayhem to be unleashed upon the staggering, bewildered population.

  8. If Republicans play it right, Walz alone, the guy who called the National Guard on BLM, can dismantle the platform. Plus, with Biden confirming to the press that he was actively pushed out by his own party, and Harris’ record (both before and as VP), it shouldn’t be hard. We’ll have to see if they do.
