The 2024 election has completely changed with a single letter. It happened so swiftly and so absolutely that no one can be blamed for being a bit confused.
Where are we? What is the state of the race? What the heck is going on? These are all questions I’ve heard again and again. Well, let me do my best to answer them.
Here, as of Wednesday, July 24th, is where the race stands.
Since the disastrous presidential debate, American voters could only seem to focus on Joe Biden’s ascending age and declining abilities. For this reason, the president could not focus his campaign on Trump’s copious negatives—something he desperately needed to do. Now Biden is out, and his distraction has been removed.
Vice President Kamala Harris has checked into the game, and the race has changed.
Suddenly, the Democrats have a candidate whose resume, background, and skills perfectly fit running a campaign against Donald Trump.
Suddenly, Trump is the old white man, angry at the new Americans on his lawn.
Suddenly, his pick of JD Vance for vice president looks rushed and silly.
Suddenly, the Democrats have a prosecutor and former California attorney general to bring the case to voters against a sexual predator, convicted felon, and a guy who tried to illegally overthrow the government.
Suddenly, a sitting vice president and a woman can talk about reproductive rights and women’s health in ways that the Irish Catholic Biden never could.
Suddenly, the bank accounts of formerly scared but now hopeful Democrats are open, sending $100 million from a million people in one day—the largest haul in American history.
Suddenly, every cell phone of every American afraid of Trump’s threat to democracy is lighting up. People are asking, “Where were you when Biden dropped out?” and “Where do I sign up?’’
Suddenly, people are whispering that Trump should actually get out of the race and make a deal to avoid further criminal prosecution.
Suddenly, the macho white man Republican convention with Hulk Hogan and the Elon Musk crowd looks aged and silly.
And that’s just on the surface. By digging deeper into the political world, you will see that the race has shifted even further.
The Polls
The latest polls have the race at a dead heat. And that was before an avalanche of online and TV advertising introduced Harris to the country.
The Messaging
Harris will tell us she is a former prosecutor who went after sexual predators, scam artists, and financial cheats. (Get it?)
Trump will portray Harris as a left-wing incompetent from the failed city of San Francisco who will allow illegal immigrants to take our jobs.
Then, because he’s Trump, he will turn to outright racism and misogyny.
Harris is an angry black woman.
Harris is friends with Black Panthers.
Harris is a foreigner. (He said the same about Obama)
Harris slept her way to the top.
Get ready for ALL that filth from Trump.
Why?
Because his senior advisor is a guy named Chris LaCivita.
Back in 2004, when John Kerry ran for president against George W. Bush, LaCivita ran a smear campaign attacking Kerry’s service and questioning his patriotism in the Vietnam War. None of it was true—Kerry was a decorated veteran—but the attacks stuck. Kerry did not respond, and he lost.
Similar attacks will certainly be run against Harris. Mark my words, they will be the dirtiest, ugliest attacks in history. It will make the Willie Horton ads by George HW Bush against Michael Dukakis look like a tea party.
The question for Harris is how tough she can be in making her case and absorbing the body blows coming her way. She passed one test already, keeping Jen O’Malley Dillon as campaign chair and bringing on former Obama campaign manager David Plouffe as an advisor.
Those two are battle-tested and will not allow the Trump campaign to paint Harris as someone she is not and will aggressively paint Trump as what he actually is. They have a lot to work with.

Harris’ second test is her choice of vice president. The conventional wisdom, however insulting to her, is to appoint a straight white man to inspire confidence in voters who don’t want to vote for a woman of color. So, the names of Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro have surfaced. All would be fine. They are smart and articulate when making a case.
I am surprised that former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg is not on the list. I was impressed to watch him eviscerate JD Vance on TV the other night. He is the best political “athlete’’ of that bunch.
Don’t waste your time wondering if Harris should pick a Liz Cheney or a Mitt Romney as a way to unite the country. Won’t happen. There is no way any Democrat would allow any Republican to get a heartbeat away from the presidency and the ability to appoint anti-abortion Supreme Court judges.
Here’s a crazy idea for VP. A guy named Admiral William McRaven. His bio will knock your socks off. He is the former chancellor of the University of Texas and a four-star Navy admiral who ran the military operation that killed Osama Bin Laden. His speech at the University of Texas graduation, in which he urges everyone to start the day by making their bed, will inspire you.
McRaven would insulate Harris from Trump’s phony toughness. He is seared in battle and deeply patriotic. Trump looks small and petty by comparison. Any criticism of McRaven invites the media to immediately remind us of Trump’s lack of military service because of his “bone spurs.’’ Plus – McRaven would be a really good president if anything happened to Harris.
Whoever she chooses, we are about to learn a lot about Kamala Harris. The news will come fast and furious. We are about to find out if she has the political toughness and the imagination to be president.
One thing is for sure: it will be one heck of a campaign.

Will she tell us how she refused to release the DNA results that exonerated a prisoner on death row?
Will she tell us why she illegally extended the sentences of prisoners to make them work for $1/day?
Will she explain how funny it was to smoke weed while sending other users to prison for the same thing?
Will she apologize for her slave owning ancestry? I don’t think she should of course, but she seems to think that today’s huwyte peepel – whose ancestors were building railroads, working in factories and had nothing to do with slavery- are guilty for sins that her ancestors committed.
Look at that! She can be judged on the content of her character. Dems don’t like that whole personal responsibility thing.
Wow! What a surprise! The real behind-the-scenes folks who run everything in the Democrat Party got Biden to debate late enough for Trump to be the official Republican nominee but early enough to toss Biden to the wolves and anoint Harris before their convention. And it happened so FAST, with money pouring in like the Big Boys knew what was coming and just pushed the button on cue! Who could have predicted it? (Yours truly, over a year ago.) The real question is, are American voters stupid enough to believe Harris is a pro-cop-tough-on-crime-nothing-to-do-with-the-border-or-any-of-Biden’s-failed-policies moderate?

The real problem is that the “Never Trumpers” would cast a vote for Trump’s opponent no matter if it’s Kim Jung Ill or the like. Their hatred of anything Trump is real thanks to the fake news media, and most would rather see the USA go down in flames (pun intended) than have another 4 years of Trump.
Mr. Ellis, you live in some bizarro, upside down alternate universe from me. There can be no unity or common understanding with your ilk. One ideology must win and the other lose.

Wow.. Shocking to read Mr. Ellis’s Kamala love when all anyone has to do is look at how things are going in the U.S. right now.. blinders on much?! Love him or hate him, Trump would fix the mess this administration has gotten us into. Vermont is a perfect example of the damage this party is capable of doing when in power.
Kevin Ellis’s Substack subscriptions must not be doing well. Now he’s gaslighting reasonable conservatives here on VDC. Apparently, his Vermont Journalism Trust cronies at VT Digger aren’t generating any traffic for him there either. So now he’s ‘projecting’… attributing his own unacceptable urges to another.

If you don’t think Ellis is projecting, read his remarks carefully. Nothing of substance. Not one issue detail. Clearly, Ellis is the angry old white man. And he revels in his BS.
Sure glad I didn’t step in it.
One thing is certain, however. Kevin Ellis’s sudden migration to here means Vermont Daily Chronicle has the Vermont progressive establishment’s attention. VDC is ‘over-the-target’ for sure. So… Bombs away.

Hi Jay – VDC republishes selected Conflict of Interest columns because they are well-written, provocative commentary on current events of statewide interest.
Guy: ‘Well written’ does not mean ‘well thought’. The Kevin Ellis piece is nothing but a well written, gaslighting, BS, hit piece. It’s hardly worth our time because there’s nothing of substance to consider. The only way to respond to Ellis is in kind. And that serves no one’s purpose. Not even VDC’s.
Kamala Harris’ father was an avowed Marxist professor in the Economics Department at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA.
Both of Harris’ parents were active in the Berkeley based Afro-American Association; Fidel Castro and Che Guevara were the heroes of the Afro-American Association.
The group’s leader, Donald Warden (aka Khalid al-Mansour), mentored two young Afro-American Association members, Huey Newton and Bobby Seale; they created the Maoist inspired Black Panther Party which gained strong support from Communist China; the Black Panther Party served as the model for creation of the Black Lives Matter Marxist organization.
Khalid al-Mansour subsequently went on to arrange financing and facilitated for Barack Hussein Obama to be accepted as a student to matriculate at Harvard Law School.
Following her graduation from college, Harris returned to California and subsequently became the mistress of the 60-year-old married Speaker of the California Assembly, Willie Brown, Jr.
Brown’s political campaigns were supported and funded by Dr. Carlton Goodlett, the owner of The Sun Reporter and several other pro-Communist newspapers.
Brown was elected as Mayor of San Francisco, and strongly endorsed Harris’ Marxist political philosophy; he guided Harris’ political rise in California politics, leading to her election as California’s Attorney General.
Willie Brown, Jr. is a well-known long-time Communist sympathizer.
Willie Brown, Jr. was initially elected to public office with substantial help of the Communist Party USA. Today, Willie Brown is widely regarded as one of the Chinese Communist Party’s best
friends in the San Francisco Bay Area.
While serving as San Francisco District Attorney, Kamala Harris mentored a young San Francisco Radical Maoist activist, Lateefah Simon, who was a member of the STORM Revolutionary Movement; Simon currently chairs the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Board.
Simon has always been close friends with the founder of Black Lives Matter Marxist Domestic Terrorists, Alicia Garza, as well as STORM member and avowed Communist, Van Jones.
Harris has been openly and aggressively supporting Black Lives Matter Marxists; Kamala Harris is still closely associated with Maoist Lateefah Simon and Marxist Alicia Garza.
Kamala Harris’s sister Maya Harris was a student activist at Stanford University. She was a closely associated with Steve Phillips, one of the leading Marxist-Leninists on campus and a long-time affiliate with the League of Revolutionary Struggle, a pro-Chinese Communist group.
Phillips came out of the Left, and in college he studied Marx, Mao, and Lenin, and maintained close associations with fellow Communists.
Phillips married into the multi billion dollar Sandler family of the Golden West Savings and Loan fortune. He funded many leftist political campaigns, and the voter registration drives in the Southern and South Western states in order to help his friend, Barack Hussein Obama, defeat Hillary Clinton. Phillips has been a major financial sponsor for Kamala Harris’s political campaigns for various California elective offices.
Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff works for the law firm DLA Piper, which “boasts nearly 30 years of experience in Communist China with over 140 lawyers dedicated to its Communist China investment Services’ branch. He was just appointed to Professor at Yale to school future lawyers in the fine points of Communism.
When she was elected to the US Senate,Kamala Harris appointed a Pro-Communist Senate Chief of Staff, Karine Jean-Pierre. Jean-Pierre was active with the New York-based Haiti Support Network.
The organization worked closely with the pro-Communist China/Communist North Korea Workers World Party and supported Jean- Bertrand Aristide, the far-left Communist former president of Haiti and the radical Lavalas movement.
Fortunately for Harris, but potentially disastrous for the Republic, elected office holders are not subject to the security clearance process. If the FBI did a Background Investigation on Kamala Harris, she never would have passed, because of her 40-year close ties with Marxists, Communists, Maoists, and Communist China.
Harris would never have been approved for acceptance to any of the 5 Military Service Academies, been appointed to a U.S. Government Sub-Cabinet position, or would have been approved to fill a sensitive position for a high security defense contractor.
Yet, since Joe Biden was elected, Harris could be a heartbeat away from being President.
The U.S. constitutional Republic is being threatened by the People’s Republic of Communist China (PPC) externally, and by their very active espionage operations within the United States.
The People’s Republic of Communist China (PPC), with 1.4 billion people, is governed by the 90 million member Chinese Communist Party (CCP), that has been working with Russia to destroy the U.S. Constitutional Republic for over 70 years.

Thank you for your detailed assessment of Kamala Harris and her ‘associates’. While I intend to double-check the points you make, I appreciate your specificity…. notably absent in Ellis’s BS. And I challenge all Harris supporters to respond. If Mr. Stevenson is inaccurate in his assessment, please advise us right here in river city.
My guess is, however, that counterpoints to Mr. Stevenson’s assessment will not show up here for discussion because people like Kevin Ellis tend to hit-and-run.
