Cops say fraudster transferred 18K from couple’s bank accounts

A 22-year-old Winooski man is facing multiple felony charges after Vermont State Police say he fraudulently transferred more than $18,000 from a Moretown couple’s bank accounts and was later found illegally possessing a firearm.

Tyrin A. Smith was arrested July 29 following an investigation that began after police received a fraud complaint on July 28. Investigators allege Smith used electronic means to deceive Brian Woodard, 41, and Rosanna Woodard, 42, both of Moretown, into providing access to their bank accounts. Police said a total of $18,002.46 was transferred into an account controlled by Smith.

According to state police, Smith also opened a bank account using identification belonging to another person. EastRise Credit Union in Colchester was also identified as a victim in the case.

After locating Smith in Winooski on July 29, troopers executed a search warrant at his Bellevue Street residence. Police said they seized evidence linking Smith to the alleged fraud, along with a firearm.

Investigators said Smith is prohibited from possessing firearms because of a previous burglary conviction involving an occupied dwelling.

Smith was charged with false pretenses or tokens, grand larceny, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, identity theft, access to a computer for fraudulent purposes, and false personation.

He was processed at the Vermont State Police Berlin Barracks and ordered held at the Northeast Regional Correctional Facility in lieu of $8,000 bail. He was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday afternoon in Washington County Superior Court, Criminal Division.

The investigation remains ongoing.
