Colchester rep rips 30-day gun purchase waiting period

Rep. Pat Brennan (R-Colchester) explains to GOP Chairman Paul Dame what’s wrong with H30, the gun control bill approved by the Legislature and now awaiting Gov. Phil Scott’s veto-or-not decision.

The Vermont Legislature wouldn’t agree to cut in half the 30-day (or more) gun purchase waiting period in S30, the gun restrictions bill passed by the Legislature and now awaiting Gov. Phil Scott’s veto decision, Rep. Pat Brennan tells VT GOP Chair Paul Dame on a recent video.

S30 also would make carrying a firearm on hospital property a criminal offense.

Brennan said he was acting on the recommendation of a legislative committee when he proposed a last-minute change to 15 business days. He said he figured it was better than the 30 days the bill now requires gun purchasers to wait if the federal government background check is delayed.

He was turned down, leading him to this conclusion: “it’s a gun-grab.”

“This is just an anti-gun bill,” Brennan said. “They don’t want to make it easy to buy guns.”

  1. Thank you Rep.Brennan. This bill is not about the “no gun zone” in and around hospitals, as that could already be addressed under existing trespass statures. This bill is and always was about what would happen to it once it went to the House. This is no more than a bill to placate Gun Nonsense Vermont, and the Bloomberg supported gun lobby. If there is any doubt as to how much money Bloomberg and the “Gifford Group” spend every year to this end, it is publicly available through the Sec. of State’s office, or subscribe to the excellent, “Vt. Guns” blog written by Evan Hughes. Evan is “The” go to gun rights guy in the State of Vermont.

  2. Ok so what if I had a emergency and have a gun in my truck what would I do then thought it out side of the road No I gest my emergency would have to wait and take my gun home first so much for saveing lives

  3. It’s a perfect storm for criminals. Where do they keep lots of drugs, . . . a hospital. When drug addicts know they can come into a hospital with a gun to get drugs without fear of anyone else having a gun on the premises, they will come. Count on it ! Unfortunately, and most likely innocent people will be hurt or killed. Vermont gun safety is one of the best in the country. But then, there are a lot of gun owners in Vermont. Criminals are cautious for that very reason. I am convinced the prerequisite for being a Representative or Senator (with just a few exceptions) is being a few bricks shy of a load. Certainly not the sharpest tool in the shed. We don’t have a legislation in Montpelier, we have a circus with lots of clowns !

  4. Waiting periods and background checks under our Constitution are illegal, here’s why.
The federal government is not delegated the authority by our Constitution to compel us to waive our guaranteed 4th Amendment right to be secure from unwarranted interrogation, search, or seizure in the absence of probable cause of criminal conduct. Or compel us to waive our guaranteed 5th Amendment right to due process as a precondition to being allowed (or denied) the exercise of our right to keep and bear arms. This violation of our 4th and 5th Amendment rights happens every time that we are interrogated under penalty of perjury without probable cause that a crime has been committed when we fill out B.A.T.F.E form 4473 to purchase a firearm. The government is not delegated the authority by our Constitution to compel us to waive our 10th Amendment right to a federal government exercising only those powers delegated to it by the United States Constitution, and State governments are prohibited the exercise of any power prohibited to the States by the United States Constitution.
The government is not delegated the authority under the 14th Amendment to make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States.

  5. This is just a stupid, stupid gun bill. It will cause a black market just like New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and California. Maryland. So how does this no sense bill stop crime. It just doesn’t make any common sense. This is a gun grabe for the law abiding American gun owner and collector. What criminal goes into a gun shop to buy a firearm the answer is none. So I think maybe Phil Scott should Veto this bill . I belive the people of Vermont should stand against this bill and start voting some people with brains and get the clowns out of our government. Buy the way Vermont has one of the lowest gun crimes in the nation. THINK BEFOR YOU VOTE.
