Bossange: Trump’s seeming hypocrisy on immigration

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

by John Bossange

In December of 2023, Mr. Trump told an audience in New Hampshire that immigrants “were poisoning the blood of our country.” He then stated that, “they were coming from Africa, Asia, from all over the world.” I continue to wonder what he means by the “blood of our country,” given that virtually everyone’s family either migrated or immigrated from somewhere to get to America.

When was the idea of  “blood of our country” established and by whom?  The idea is a myth.  Need proof?  Just ask presidential candidate Donald Trump and candidate JD Vance.  They know this idea is a myth and a lie.  After all, they both married immigrants and now have immigrant children.  Let’s look at the facts.

Mr. Trump’s third wife is from Slovenia, which used to be Yugoslavia.  Like most Slovenians, her heritage is a part of the south Slavic ethnic group native to Slovenia.  I’m sure Mrs. Trump is proud of her heritage, as she should be.  But the question for Mr. Trump is what about his most recent son?  Like his mom, I’m sure this son is a fine person, but does he carry “poison in his blood” just because his mom was an immigrant from a Slavic nation?

Even Mr. Trump’s heritage is from another country.  His father was the son of German immigrants, while his mother emigrated from Scotland.  Does that heritage of immigrants make Mr. Trump any less American?  Is there “poison” in his blood?  The answer is obvious. No.  Just like his third wife and their son, Mr. Trump is an American citizen regardless of his ancestral history and any notion of “mixed blood.”

We can see the same situation with his vice presidential candidate. JD Vance, who comes from Scots-Irish heritage and married the daughter of immigrants from India. I’m sure both JD and his wife are proud of their ethnic heritage and in his wife’s case, her race and religious background.  Again, is there any “poison” in the “mixed blood” of their three children, just because of their mixed race ancestral Indian background?  Again, the answer is, of course not.

All our roots are scattered across the globe, with a mixture of ethnic and often racial or religious characteristics.  It does not matter where we came from or when we arrived.  There is no such thing as getting here first and telling others that you are now the pure blood of the nation.  Further, there is no measure of unacceptable immigration based on one’s ethnicity, race or religion.  Slavic, German, Scots-Irish, and Indian are all a part of our American blood.

As our nation continues to grow, Mr. Trump and Mr. Vance need to be told that there will never be any poison in our collective blood.  Immigration is the 245-year-old heritage and strength of America.  Yes, immigrants need to be legal and the borders controlled, but it cannot be exclusionary based on one’s race, religion, or national origin just because someone decides that a specific heritage will “poison” American blood.

It’s also far past time for both MAGA Party candidates to end their divisive, fear-mongering comments about selected immigrants, especially those of color from different countries and ethnic backgrounds.  Mr. Trump and Mr. Vance need to look into a mirror, be reminded of their own family’s heritage, and understand what it has always meant to be an American.  You can bet their children would be most appreciative.

  1. Good points that need a good response. Obviously he wasn’t saying his parents, his wife, or his VP’s were poisoning anything, so what WAS the context it was being stated? That said, many Native Americans would agree with the statement.

  3. Tell us Bossange…..who established the “blood” (a SYMBOL, an oft-spoken METAPHOR) of a country such as Great Britain? How ’bout Germany? China? India? Canada? Australia? African nations? Etc.?

And further, please do tell us which countries around the world have never experienced “colonization” or pioneering or founding of organized governmental entities within the above?

And lastly, please also provide the litany of nations around the globe that allow unfettered emigration so as to despoil ancient or long-term culture and customs with intent.

We know you read VDC & have permitted inclusion of your left-wing propagandized columns to be published, therefore we would all very much appreciate your enforcing your convoluted opinions with verifiable facts.

  4. Oh and by the way – PLEASE explain how LEGAL immigration is synonymous to you with ILLEGAL immigration that violates extant federal laws?

  5. Mr. Bossange look to your own house!!!! Look at Vermont history!!!!
Vermont in the 1920’s wanted to clean up the gene pool in Vermont by using sterilization and abortion procedures to start reducing the population of undesirable groups including poor people, the feeble minded, French-Canadians, Irish Catholics and dare I say it the Abenecki (native Americans using sterilization and abortions to eliminate these groups. It was enacted in targeted cities….it was called Eugenics. Today the progressives use abortions and sterilizations (with gender reassignment procedures at any age) to bring eugenics back. They are trying to close down the pregnancy centers because they don’t want women who are pregnant unmarried to have their babies which is modern day Eugenics to control the population calling the culprit —climate change. Everything is climate change and because of it we are now all saddled with the taxes to pay for it. I’m still not convinced there is a problem with climate except for the government’s interference in it using geoengineering!!
The flooding events of the last year should be paid for by every progressive loosing their jobs and pensions. All they want is to dictate, grab control and hold on to power. They apologized for eugenics but never did reparations because they planned to re-enact the program. I dislike those politicians that want to control every aspect of my life-I will never vote for another progressive or any democrat, or Marxists like Harris. I want less government and will vote for republicans all the way.

  6. Could he have been speaking figuratively, not literally ? Blood maybe means here legally as opposed to being here illegally ? ? I hope I don’t have to remind people here how often what Trump says is exaggerated, misquoted, out of context, and even untrue.

    • And this author is a schoolteacher and should understand semantics and the way people use the phrase, the blood of our land. This man is brainwashed in the woke society of the control cult of progressives, then verbally assaults Trump for using a well-known phrase and twists it to make his fraudulent point. A true liberal with TDS!

  7. What a pathetic straw-man critique. Trump was talking about illegal migrants and others gaming the refugee system, who have no interest in becoming “American”, in becoming part of the living “blood” of America.

  8. I’m pretty sure he is referring to those who have zero interest in actually becoming Americans. There is a gigantic and growing percentage of the population who want all the benefits without doing any of the work: they refuse to learn the language, demand government services and documents in their native tongue, and refuse to learn about, and cherish, the rights afforded Americans. And they’re certainly not interested in recognizing the principles that made this country the greatest in all of history.

Nope, they’re just here for the freebies.

And the Democrats have learned how to buy their votes.

  9. Hey John Bossange, your TDS is front and center in all your postings, as you mention
we have had immigration for 245 years, from all countries, and over the years these legal immigrants assimilated into our customs ” American Customs ” but keeping their family heritage values……………..

The Illegals swarming the borders and breaking our laws show they have no respect for our country, we are all from migrant heritage, but that’s where it ends, Illegals are
slap in the face to those who came here legally, illegals are “poison” to the country !!

  10. What is missing from this “opinion” piece? The facts of what is going on in Ireland, the UK, France, Sweden, Canada, Germany, Australia…aka our Western allies. How are their border issues working out these days? It appears this was a planned and well funded upending of Western civilizations. China doesn’t have illegals pouring into their country, nor does Isreal, India, Russia, Pacific Rim nations, Turkey, or Africa. Gee, I wonder why? Putin did offer refuge and sanctuary to Western asylum seekers…he sees what is coming and he’ll take all the smart ones under his wing.

When globalist, depopulation ghouls spew off showing their real colors and fruits, believe them. They should be careful what they wish for because they will be eliminated and are targetted for elimination just as billions of people are in Western nations. They believe the collapse won’t touch them – oh contraire matey – they want you gone, no matter the flag you wave or how diverse you pretend to be. Deemed useless eater if you are breathing and don’t have a seat at the big tables.

  11. Another foolish screed from the retired middle school principal and resident of South Burlington. Thank God he’s not teaching our children his Marxist ideology to our kids anymore. If you don’t the difference between legal and illegal immigration that’s one thing, but you do and you are justifying the Commiecrats open border policies and use it to let illegals vote to keep the party of your choice in power.

My Uncle Nick was the last of our family to come from Italy legally through Ellis Island where he was documented, deloused and quarantined. He had to have a sponsor which was a family member, a place to stay, a job. There were no free cell phones to use or debit cards for him to buy things with or free hotels for him to stay in, no free healthcare for him to use. Most importantly he had to go to classes, study and take a test he had to pass on our Constitution, history and how our government worked to become a citizen of the United States. It was immigrants like my Uncle Nick of all nationalities that contributed to the life blood of the United States and strengthened the “blood of our country” it by assimilating to be American.

Now Mr. Bossange wants us to believe that the illegals flooding into our country not going thru the process above is somehow not harming our country and that Trump using the analogy he did about poisoning the blood of our country like the fine people on both sides of the Charlottsville hoax can’t be differentiated by the American people. Anyone who had an Uncle Nick could. Instead, Mr. Bossange knows full well what he is espousing is the Cloward & Piven theory and is saying because Trump is on to it and telling everyone that he’s the bad guy.

  12. Fear is a great motivator. Trump is an expert at getting folks to fall for his over simplified, uninformed, and prejudice remarks. If one looks at the regular comments from the majority of this forum’s contributors, one can see the effectiveness of this tactic. Fear of immigrants, fear of the media, fear of the courts, fear of home invasions, fear of the IRS, fear of higher education, fear of public schools, fear of books, and let us not forget fear of validated fair elections.

    • Political propaganda is a great stratagem.

If one merely glances at the ramblings of the radicalized socialists, like jdevino1791, who occasionally, though unsuccessfully, attempt to provide reproach to the otherwise sensible and constitutionally adept posts of the conservative contributors – one immediately senses how successful the left has been in instilling their propaganda.

In fact, the “democrat-socialist” party headed by Biden/Harris is keenly adept at such subterfuge in using jargon such as fifty percent of the American public are “threats to democracy” and slaughtering one’s own progeny in utero being “health care”. And as with the above-referenced poster’s own words, we can surmise:

Opposing the use of pornographic, age-inappropriate material in public schools is “fear of books”,

Proclaiming that violating long-term extant federal immigration laws that protect the sovereignty of any nation, including this one, is “fear of immigrants”,

Opposing the US Justice System being weaponized so as to persecute & prosecute political opposition as in all banana republics is “fear of courts”,

Mourning the loss of a free, objective, unbiased, & non-partisan news-disseminating agencies as the US Constitution intended is “fear of the media”,

Objecting to the indoctrination of students and the implementation of programs & admission policies requiring “equitable” outcomes in publicly funded schools and within institutions of higher education as “fear of higher education”,

Possessing fear about crimes such as home invasions in a State wherein homicides, sexual assaults & drug addiction rates are at a historic all-time high due to the democrat’s dangerous & failed “Defund the Police” movement is “fear of home invasions” is indeed both rational and reasonable!

And free and fair elections can NEVER be assured without voter identification which most first world countries ascribe to, allowing challenges to purported election results based upon credible claims of voter fraud as allowed by Federal Law, and the prevention of mass election interference by social media companies through their collective prohibition of Freedom of Speech and omission of public information as disseminated by any and all individuals, organizations, and agencies regardless of political affiliation or persuasion.

Just as an aside interestingly enough however, the poster above who is known only as “jdevino1791” also intentionally disregarded the rules & regulations for posting on this site which requires disclosure of actual names must possess “fear of identification”.

    • Hellooooooo…..? I’m still awaitin’ a reply to my post below that thoroughly obliterated what you originally believed was your quick-witted post. Try again.

    • To Kathleen, interesting your comment to jdevino1791. Noting your translations of what is stated and what the real meaning of a phrase is. I have noted government meanings which differ entirely from the words they use for the public. I have under took an effort on the NET to get a dictionary of the government meanings relative to Webster’s. People have to be aware what politicians really say in their environment.
Regarding J’s year 1971 I wonder what was the significance vs 1776 (Constitution). Some interesting US 1791 highlights:
Feb 25 1st Bank of US chartered
Mar 3 1st US internal revenue act (taxing distilled spirits & carriages)
Mar 3 Congress establishes US Mint
Mar 4 President Washington calls the US Senate into its first special session
Mar 4 Vermont admitted as 14th state (1st addition to the 13 colonies)
Mar 10 John Stone of Concord, Massachusetts, patents a pile driver
Mar 11 Samuel Mulliken is 1st to obtain more than one US patent
Mar 21 Captain Hopley Yeaton becomes 1st commissioned officer in the Revenue
Marine, later the Revenue Cutter Service, the forerunner of the modern US Coast
      Guard
Aug 2 Samuel Briggs and his son granted US patent for a nail-making machine
Aug 26 John Fitch granted US patent for his working steamboat
Dec 15 1st US law school established at University of Pennsylvania
Dec 17 NYC traffic regulation creates 1st 1-way street

These facts don’t seem to relate to J’s comments as being Liberal and anti-Trump who is concerned about this country, not Jdevino1791. When did his cross over happen and where? He must have waltzed into VT. That’s why I ask, where do these Liberals get brainwashed? Must have been “educated” by Bossange, What might the reason J didn’t use 1776, being more important to make believe he’s a Conservative of mind.

    • How ridiculous. Fear was the primary tactic of Obama and his Progressives going back to 2008 while at the same time claiming the “other side” is the fear mongering. Hillary and Biden took it to new levels (fear of the end of democracy! fear of the right to choose! etc etc) Meanwhile, so called “Democrats” still don’t know how to explain their new modern day Manchurian candidate. Evidently, having the censorship industrial complex choose your candidate is not fearful. It is for many citizens.

  13. Trump and the GOP are always attacked as anti-immigrants. They are not. They are anti-illegal immigration, there is a huge difference. We need to follow set quotas of how many people are let into our country AND we need to vet people and bring people in who can provide meaningful contributions. Our country is broke financially and we cannot support millions of non-English speaking, non-skilled people.

  14. There has been over xenophobia in this country for the longest time. Certainly in the early 1900s there was significant bias against those of eastern European and Italian heritage. There has been Bias against individuals of various religions, Catholicism, Judaism, and now Islam. We all came from some other culture.

Of greater concern to me is the illusion that the individuals coming from other countries now are mentally ill, criminals, rapists, murderers, etc.

While there are certainly incidents of immigrants/illegal immigrants committing crimes. I have yet to see evidence that they commit crimes with higher frequency, greater severity, or suffer more metal illness than persons of other backgrounds. Without someone producing that data, subject to scientific scrutiny, such an assertion is simply groundless.

    • Xenophobia? A false dichotomy to be sure.

Do ‘illegal’ immigrants commit more crimes than ‘legal’ immigrants? They’re all ‘foreigners’. So, why characterize those of us who support law abiding immigrants, not criminal immigrants, as xenophobic?

All ‘illegal’ immigrants are here ‘illegally’, which means they’ve all committed a crime. But they aren’t being arrested, in many cases not detained and prosecuted at all. And when they’re not arrested, for whatever crime they may have committed, there’s no record (i.e., data) of the crime to compare ‘scientifically’ with other demographics. Perhaps, then, it’s just as reasonable to say that it’s your assertion that ‘is simply groundless’.

Of greater concern to me is that the denial that ‘illegal’ immigration through an uncontrolled border isn’t a crime or doesn’t exist, isn’t just an ‘illusion’, it’s a ‘delusion’.

“An illusion is a distortion of the senses, a misinterpretation of a true sensation, while a delusion is a false fixed belief that is not amenable to change despite conflicting evidence. Illusions are about sensory distortion, whereas delusions are about false beliefs.”
