There’s been a lot of talk lately about the Republican ticket featuring a presidential and vice presidential candidate who are being accused of making “weird” comments during their campaign stops and interview sessions. Voters who are interested in their candidacies are now wondering if their recent remarks are weird or simply represent who they really are. I think they are both.
Mr. Trump has a long history of lying, and most recently making some very weird and politically unwise responses to questions that will alienate potential swing voters. But that is who he is. Mr. Trump speaks to his base and not to the larger public of American voters. That has not served him well, as evidenced by his inability to capture a majority of the popular vote in the 2016 and 2020 elections.
But it has been Mr. Trump’s most recent derogatory comments on race and religion combined with his sexist and disrespectful actions with women that will most certainly limit his appeal to a broader base of supporters. Being a convicted felon and of sexual abuse will haunt his reputation forever, and now challenging another candidate’s “blackness,” and then telling an audience of Christians that he will make our country the “United Christian States of America,” will cause millions of potential voters to move even further away from his candidacy, ignoring his divisive rhetoric and weird, uncomforting opinions.
Unfortunately, there is nothing new here. Race, religion, and sex have always been central to Mr. Trump’s political agenda. Challenging President Obama’s nationality, making disrespectful and inaccurate accusations about immigrants and Americans who are people of color, supporting white supremacists who chanted “Jews will not replace us,” bragging about fondling women, hiring a prostitute to service him while his third wife nursed their newborn son, are all examples of who Donald Trump really is. Weird and creepy yes, but at least we know what we are getting.
The same cannot be said for Mr. Trump’s vice presidential candidate, JD Vance. He has made weird comments as well. Questioning a woman’s right to an abortion and supporting a federal abortion ban even in the case of rape or incest, and mocking women’s choice to not have children are two distasteful, unappealing, and weird political positions coming from a candidate who is supposed to help expand the MAGA party base of voters. Mr. Vance’s demonization of women is strange and like Mr. Trump, deeply hostile to women. One must wonder why he is making these statements? Just two weeks ago he actually stated married couples should have their votes count more than single Americans. He seems to be getting more and more bizarre and weird.
Yet, unlike Mr. Trump, we really do not know who Mr. Vance is. He has a history of stating that Mr. Trump is unfit for office. His comments from just a year ago would never make him Mr. Trump’s vice-presidential choice. But now as Mr. Trump’s selection, he has done a complete 180 turn and is praising the “patriots” of January 6th, supporting the long history of lies made by Mr. Trump, and has entered race, religion and sex into his platform of issues as well. All of this is weird, strange, and worrisome again, for sure. But equally troubling is the fact that millions of voters are now wondering what Mr. Vance really believed before his abrupt pivot to gain the favor of Mr. Trump. Maybe Mr. Trump is wondering that too, and if he might need to throw Mr. Vance under the bus just as he did to Vice-President Pence.
Will Mr. Trump and Vance continue to use race, religion, and gender as campaign issues? If they do, only the loyal MAGA base, along with racists, religious extremists, and misogynists will drink that kool aid, and the base will not grow large enough to win either the popular or electoral college vote. Instead their bubble of fear, hate, and darkness and their offensive language will insult the intelligence of most voters and rub against the moral fabric that has made America the “shining city on the hill.” Hope and opportunity, not hate and fear, make up our nation’s DNA.
America and democracy are ideas that have evolved ever so slowly and often imperfectly over 245 years. Neither has ever been static and permanently defined. Most Americans do not want to halt our evolution and stop our progress towards becoming that “shining city on the hill.” If the MAGA Party believes it can defy America’s history, they have not studied America’s history. Political demagogues have come and gone. I believe that will occur again with Mr. Trump and Mr. Vance. Like others who have used the same playbook, their bubble will shrink and eventually burst.
America deserves better than Donald Trump and JD Vance. Their brand of weirdness is not who we are. America’s history has proven time and time again that voters will reject hate and fear, and see through the message of demagogues. Most Americans will vote for hope, light, and the opportunity to live the American dream in that “shining city on the hill.”

I think it’s weird (1) how the MSM either at the same time all independently stumbled onto the “JD Vance is weird” narrative or, more likely, agreed to parrot talking points from their Master; and (2) that any thinking, fair-minded person would repeat the nonsense. Check out “Hillbilly Elegy” by Vance; his biography does not seem weird to me at all. Seems to be an inspiring story of success from humble beginnings written by an intelligent young man. If you read his biography which you definitely didn’t, you’d know that Vance wrote that book when he was liberal, for liberals. Its thesis is that Appalachian’s are defeatist and responsible for their own suffering, not decades of Neoliberal policies. Vance only changed sides (much like Trump) when he figured out he wasn’t in on the joke in liberal elite circles, he was the joke. Hence both of their anger. Just like Elon, they would trade it all to be part of the circles which they eschew, because they’re weird. Too weird for NYC and Hollywood.

If you read The Smear by Sheryl Atkisson, it’s really eye opening to how much coordination there is, and she lays out who and how it’s all done.
Once you look for repeated words across all different platforms, you suddenly realize how scripted pretty much our entire media is. Soviet Russia is jealous of how much control and how powerfully the United States has mastered complete propaganda, control of the press.

It’s “President Trump” and Senator Vance”. They are certainly not “weird” compared to Harris and Waltz. Their weird. “Light and hope”, along with “the shining city on the hill” will vanish in a few short years if the Harris/Waltz duo are installed as Commander in Chief and alternate.
I recognize your 1st Amendment right to express your opinion. I also have the same right of expression, and would ask you, are you, and in the bigger picture, we/Americans, better off now than we were 3 1/2 years ago, (even considering COVID) than you (we) are now ? My experience is that my future looked brighter under the Trump administration than it does now, or has since the Biden administration came to power. My retirement funds have yet to recover to the level that they were at prior to 1/20/21. The border was being respected by those on the other side of it. The Russians were in Russia where they belong. Heating my home was cheaper, and no one was telling me how to heat it. Driving my vehicle was more affordable, and no one was telling me what type of vehicle I must drive. Going to the grocery store was nowhere near as painful as it is now. We had a respected, if not feared militarily by our adversaries. We were on our way to a safe, respectful, withdrawal of our troops from Afghanistan, instead, 13 lives were lost, and many more wounded, and billions of taxpayer dollars of military weaponry were given to an enemy in an ill conceived plan that was viewed by our adversaries as a sign of weakness. And we’re worried that someone is perceived as being “weird” ? Give me weird, prosperous, safe and respected any day !

Bossange, in this commentary merely regurgitates salacious rumors and ramblings from the internet, without citation. His accusations have been fact-checked and found untruthful, but his verbiage is flowery and oh so elitist. Not bad for a retired school teacher and part time community activist. Perhaps he should research his musings…
It seems that bossange is offering up the virtues of ms. harris, whom used sex to start her political career- as fact checked by Reuters and other news organizations-
Walz needs to atone for the fantastically repugnant lie of his military service, including accurate stolen valor claims. Methinks bossange needs to rethink his words.

It’s interesting that such an article was published. Instead of drilling a hole in his head to exposed the mental state of a Die-hard Liberal, for the most part it’s in black and white for viewing, what other subliminal . electrons are trying to make connections? People are born, raised, schooled with basic foundation of the Golden Rule. Getting older and more educated, outside influences take over, was it in Liberal HS and higher educations, influential groups, media, Hollywood, social forums, friends, parents, telephone (any form), etc. A person has the capability of being Left or Right based on their acceptance off the data and people. How did Mr Bossange get his position relative to Trump’s?—-exposure to the real world and surviving?

TDS – find a cure! A podcaster recently played a video of Trump appearing on ABC’s brooding, bitter hen show The View. The video was back when Barbara Walters was in charge. Barbara introduced DJT as her “good friend” and the other couch hens were all nice to him, respectful, and supportive. The audience cheered when he spoke of our country facing dire straits. There was another video of him appearing on Oprah – again he was treated nicely and respectfully, the audience responding favorably to his statements. Then there is Joe and Mika – Mika flew off her stool to greet Trump with a kiss and a leg kick to boot.
Interesting to contrast and compare the celebrities and newscasters, prior to 2016, fawn and celebrate DJT like a hero. After 2016, they turned on him like the vipors they truly are – seems they don’t like him after loving him and taking his contribution money for so many years prior.
I conclude he was on the inside, saw the disgusting and reprehensible things they do behind the scenes, and decided to bring their houses of evil down to the ground. Who was the only person who cooperated in the Epstein case? Who is the person who says they will declassify the secrets about JFK, 9/11, and other crimes against the USA? Who was given the sword dance in Saudi Arabia and chocolate cake in the Forbidden City? Not sleepy Joe, or Slick Willy, or Obummer. What was written on those cards at Bush Sr’s funeral? Jeb Bush looked like he was headed for the gallows while Junior stared down at his shoes.
Why is he hated so much? Because the ignorant populace would rather be lied to, manipulated, and controlled – perfectly comfortable being in a bubble of denial and delusion. One person called it “normal bias.” I call it a mind virus courtesy of the elites and demonic possession. I don’t worship false idols. I will say Trump made great strides in getting some people to wake up and find the Truth behind his statements. It is a shame many people don’t know how to research or look for alternate sources of information. No matter the number of degrees or masters they hold – they are still woefully ignorant and mind-controlled.
Three Cheers for having this article posted, I’m in agreement with others, we should have more of this, because it leads to a discourse of ideas and facts. While we’ll likely never change the ideas coming from the author, it will give other people, perhaps not so brain washed by propaganda and devoid of all wisdom, a look at opposing views and public discourse. This is vitally important because public discourse in Vermont has no forum.
The reason why Vermont Digger stopped allowing commentary is because they needed a legion of people to “moderate” aka censor and the posters were having far more factual, reasoned arguments than any of the people writing or reporting for Vermont Digger.

These articles should be used in media studies classes to showcase the nuts and bolts of propaganda.
* The repeated use of emotive words (convicted felon, sexual abuse, racist)
* The tone that creates a sense of “us” – reasonable, refined, friendly…. and “them” – misinformed, bigoted, angry.
* The claim that if you don’t agree you are creating uncertainty and introducing an unknown danger to all of us. (“ Weird and creepy yes, but at least we know what we are getting…..The same cannot be said for Mr. Trump’s vice presidential candidate, JD Vance. “)
Not one of the author’s accusations stands up to even minimal scrutiny but that doesn’t matter. The uninformed will accept them as fact and those who argue that, for instance, the felony case had all the hallmarks of law fare and appeals have yet to be heard, will be labeled “MAGAT’s”. They will be treated as naughty schoolboys, best ignored, by an exasperated schoolteacher.
OK the guy is a devout Liberal. With that credentials, the only place that would hire him is the Burlington school system, also being liberal. I don’t believe he’s a Vermonter. He’s educating the next generation of Government legislators, to keep VT Socialistic. Too bad people seeking Government jobs (teachers, legislators) don’t take a cognitive ,mental test to qualify for employment. Have to be middle of the road mentally. The response to John Bossange’s article further convinces me that the VDC is biased to conservative values. Not one published opinion was supportive of the opinion. That’s okay. We should always entertain diverse views. What astounds me is the number of people who deny what Mr. Trump is, his traitorous and criminal behavior and his treatment of women. It seems if one’s own pocketbook is flourishing a vote for a despicable narcissist is okay.
Yes, ‘fer sure…..Bill Clinton’s repugnant treatment of women under his desk in our Oval Office and JFK’s sociopathic & predatory, if not murderous treatment of women was MUCH better! And then there’s Hillary who was never prosecuted, thanks only to POTUS Trump, for having her staff physically pulverize her personal computers to hide state’s evidence of her mishandling of classified documents that implicated her in a massive national security violations scandal —– not to mention her role in the Benghazi embassy attack that left a US Ambassador killed & over a dozen other Americans dead & wounded as well.

In 1975, President Ford was left to manage the difficult ending of the Viet Nam War.
President Ford went to congress for a relief package to allow American personnel and our allies to evacuate. However, there was one US Senator who opposed any such support. The result was the embarrassing and hurried evacuation from the roof of the American Embassy in Saigon.

Despite the efforts of this senator, President Ford managed to rescue 1,500 South Viet Nam allies prior to the country’s fall. Had President Ford not acted quickly, these people would have been targeted and slaughtered for their support for America. When they arrived in America, President Ford asked Congress for a package to assist these refugees to integrate into American society.
That same troublesome Senator torpedoed any support for these shell shocked, anticommunist, Americans and our helpers, the refugees.
Instead, President Ford had to recruit Christian organizations to offer assistance on a voluntary basis. As he did so, the Senator belittled those efforts. What kind of person would oppose President Ford’s tireless work to do the right and humanitarian thing?
Who would want to play politics with the well-being of innocent people who stood by America in the tragic Viet Nam War?

At least the author avoiding mentioning Trump’s woeful opposition, the party that will “save democracy” by not holding primary debates, pushing a sitting president to quit his reelection campaign, installing a new nominee without a single primary vote cast for her (who has yet to have a press conference or real interview), trying to jail their political opponent by any means necessary (common in banana republics), and using lawfare to try to kick another opponent, RFK Jr., off the ballot in key states. All this from the party that also effectively rigged the 2016 and 2020 primaries against Bernie Sanders, who was positioned to win until suddenly he wasn’t.
