Senate Pro Tem Phil Baruth (D-Chittenden Central), perhaps the most gun-control minded Senate leader in the history of Vermont’s upper chamber, successfully asked the Senate Rules Committee to waive crossover rules and introduced a sweeping gun control bill today.
S.329, “criminal procedures involving firearms,” was introduced today, Wednesday April 15. Baruth, who is not running for re-election, is the sole sponsor. The bill needed permission from Senate Rules because it was not introduced and voted out of its original committee by the mid-March Crossover deadline.
The bill would (1) provide that stealing a firearm of any value constitutes grand larceny; (2) increase the penalties for second or subsequent offenses of firearms possession by prohibited persons; (3) prohibit the possession of firearms by persons who have been found by a court to pose a danger of harm to themselves or others as the result of a mental illness; (4) prohibit the possession of machine guns; and (5) prohibit the possession of firearms on premises licensed to serve alcohol.
The bill resembles H.606, an omnibus bill that passed the House. It’s now in Senate Judiciary, of which Baruth is a member. Crucially, H.606 did not include the prohibition of firearms on premises licensed to serve alcohol (bars and restaurants).
A Burlington charter change advanced by Baruth to ban guns in alcohol-serving restaurants and bars passed the Senate last year and since has been hanging on the wall in the House Government Operations and Military Affairs Committee.
Members of the Senate Rules Committee are: Baruth, Chair; Kesha Ram Hinsdale (D-Chittenden South); Virginia “Ginny” Lyons (D-Chittenden South); Scott Beck (R-Caledonia), and Brian Collamore (R-Rutland).

Baruth, babe. Go back to NY if you want NY gun laws. Don’t NY/NJ/CT/MA our beautiful VT. I understand that you’re not used to guns in bars, but in the world we live in where police are typically minutes away when seconds count making a lawful, intelligent gun owner a criminal when a knucklehead off their meds decides to shoot up a bar is forest thru the trees mentality. Considering all the imports we have of late, it’s inevitable that we suffer some kind of event. I personally do not eat out late in the larger areas of VT but if I do I am of sound mind and do not wish to be dragged thru court for stupid gun laws “just cuz”. There’s been enough hurting of VT’s business environment in the last 20 years, if you keep heading down this road many will see you’re in support of the theft/drug trade mentality that ruins most of the more populace states. VT is a haven, stop poking the bear. Progression is a necessity but there will almost always be a “bad guy” until many other factors involved in society are groomed out. So, that said, stop trying to wing your dingy around the state house and start cracking down on criminals that are obviously violent and proving themselves outstanding members of society. I personally feel a armed society is a polite society. We all know at this point that an arm can be traced enough for prosecution of broken laws, it’s time to be firm on criminals and not restrictive on the “good guys”.
Let the system actually work and filter things out, there are ENOUGH laws on the books, you and your fellow dems need to let them be ENFORCED. If you just need to wing your dingy GTFO of VT if you don’t like it. KK duder?
This is just mindless legislation making for a feel good scenario. It’s crazy. Guess he wants out before taking a mental competence test. Where he lives is a dangerous area, more so than a bar. Wonder if he carries.
Baruth is the sound you make when you puke.
…like…RALPH!
THAT is probably the best comment from you I’ve ever read! 😂
That gave me a visual
Little by little the communists want control, it has nothing to do with what Vermonters want, but everything to do with being the first colony of the United Nations, a Marxist world domination plan. We are the lab rats the training ground.
Cases in point Iran and China. How many people killed in Iran by the IRGC? and even with the U.S. doing the damage it has done to the Islamic regime the people cannot get their country back because they have no weapons. In China they were welded into their apartments during Covid, no weapons.
Kurt Schlichter: “You know if the Chinese could buy guns they wouldn’t be welded in their apartments. Because we can we aren’t”.
Yehuda Remer: “People with ARs don’t get in cattle cars”.
We are lab rats but this “lab rat” is armed to the teeth.
Armatissimie e liberissimi – Most armed and most free. MOLOM LABE!
Many people with low information would think you are out of your mind, but you are speaking truth here. This is the message that needs to get out. It is very difficult for people to understand this because the education system especially Universities are not teaching people how to think. They are teaching them how to be “woke” instead.

Great post Paul. Did you know that the Gun Owners of VT (GoVT) and the VT Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs (VTFSC) arranged for John Lott to come to VT to testify in the Senate Judiciary Committee. He was disrespected and in my opinion mistreated by some of the anti gun extremists on the committee. He’s one of, if not THE, top data analysts working in the 2A realm, a PhD, independent researcher and author with an enormous volume of data and understanding at his command, someone the Committee members could have learned from. Instead he was treated as the enemy for bringing information, data, facts and truth they just didn’t want anyone to hear.
The gun is not the only tool. Baruth is a tool.

For cryin’ out loud, just GO AWAY !
To quote the ending of Bridge On The River Kwai, “Madness, madness”.
Flamin’ out Phil! He cant go away with dignity. Typical of radicals. Remember his shining moment, speech to his democrat subjects in the state house, telling them to ‘take down the fossil fuel industry’. Ignore any contrary ideas. These people get elected in VT.
I find gun laws ridiculous. The only people gun laws restrict are law abiding citizens. Criminals don’t care about gun laws and they won’t follow them.
If everyone in this state were criminals, gun laws would not matter.
