Bartley: Carbon tax goes to House floor this afternoon

by Rep. Ashley Bartley

On average it takes nine hundred gallons of propane to heat a home, in our great state of Vermont. This legislation will add at least $630 dollars to the heating bills of Vermonters every year.

Rebranding this bill as the “Affordable Heat Act” is disingenuous. Vermonters deserve better, they deserve transparency.

Let’s call a spade a spade, S.5 is a carbon tax.

A tax that is both harmful and regressive, adding 70 cents per gallon at a minimum to the cost of home heating fuels and will likely be more in the future. We know that the the provisions of S.5 will have detrimental effects on our low-income and rural Vermonters. For a majority of the State, this is not only the most affordable option but the ONLY viable option to heat homes in our frigid winters.

Vermonters are already facing volatile markets, effecting unsustainable increases in the prices of food, housing affordability and our most basic human needs.

I have heard from what feels like each and every one of my constituents who feel hopeless as Montpelier throws more obstacles in their path. They have pleaded with me to oppose this bill and I will.

Today, I will be voting no on S.5 and I urge all of you to contact your Legislator and tell them to vote no!

  1. Thank you Ashley, and thank you acting on behalf of your constituents. I wish I was one of them. I hate to admit it, but I haven’t even bothered to contact my Rep. He informed us at Town Meeting how he was going to vote on the Bill, with which at least 90% of the people in the room agreed. Yes- I live in “one of those” towns.

  2. We do not support or need this bill this does not help seniors or low income Vermonters during this time of high inflation This bill needs to be buried

  3. The Vermont Legislature has seen and heard ample testimony, constituent blow back, and many op-eds pointing out the obvious. They don’t care if people have to choose between food or fuel. Above all, they don’t care if you don’t like a drag queen shaking their booty in your kid’s face. They don’t care if you don’t like sexually explicit books in your elementary school library. They don’t care if you don’t like scrambling your kid’s brain into mush with fear the world is coming to an end because their white or want a plastic straw for their juice box. Is it not obvious by now? They don’t care and they will do whatever they damn well please. They are drunk of power, they are paid to destroy our country, and they will continue, with impunity, until the country, our State, and our lives are destroyed. They want to see us all dead and they will happily assist with that one way or another – you just can’t do it with your own firearm.
