A 43-year-old man from Newport has died due to injuries sustained during a motorcycle crash in Derby July 3, state police say.

The crash took place on Beebe Road at around 1 AM. Police identified the driver as Brian Mercer. Mercer had driven off the road when traveling north. He was transported by helicopter to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center to be treated for his injuries.

Mercer passed away on July 19 at Dartmouth Medical Center’s Intensive Care Unit.

State police say Mercer is the seventh motorcyclist to die in a crash on Vermont roads this year. In 2021, there were 13 motorcyclist fatalities; in 2020, there were 10; in 2019 & ’18, there were 5 each year; in 2017, there were 11.
