House Dems regain supermajority

By Guy Page

After the Red Wave, the Blue Undertow.

About half of the Republican House Red Wave Class of 2024 lost their bids for re-election yesterday, November 3.

The once-sturdy 57-vote caucus collapsed to (by VDC’s count) to 38 yesterday in what GOP Chair Paul Dame, in a late-night statement, called part of the nationwide response to dissatisfaction with President Trump. The Democrats and Democrat-Progressives now have a firm supermajority of at least 109 votes in the House of Representatives – enough to overcome a governor’s veto even if several caucus members defect.

Two of the three re-elected independents, Jed Lipsky of Stowe and Adam Howard of Cambridge, may likely vote with Republicans on some issues.

In the House, the following freshmen GOP reps were unseated: Rob North of Ferrisburgh, Jim Casey of Hubbardton, Sandy Pinsonault of Dorset, Debbie Powers of Waterford, Brenda Steady of Milton, Tony Micklus of Milton, Joe Luneau of St. Albans, Richard Bailey of Hyde Park, Kevin Winter of Ludlow, Michael Boutin of Barre City, VL Coffin of Cavendish, and Tom Charlton of Chester.

Freshmen Republicans who kept their seats were Michael Southworth of Walden, Deborah Dolgin of St. Johnsbury, Greg Burtt of Danville, Mike Tagliavia of Corinth, Ken Wells of Brownington, Dave Bosch of Clarendon, Chris Brown (who resigned after his 2024 re-election) of Castleton, Christopher Rowland of Rutland, Chris Keyser of Rutland, Alicia Malay of Pittsford, and Chris Pritchard of Pawlet.

Also, longtime Bennington incumbent Mary Morrissey was unseated; Republican Tom Otterman defeated his great-nephew Aiden in Orange County; and Franklin County is no longer solid red with losses to Democrats in several districts.

  1. Well, Vermonters unfortunately chose to follow the national Democrat bandwagon and voted for a supermajority that will only raise our taxes and make our lives worse. Vermont made a big mistake last night.

    • What did the republican house led by Scott accomplish in the last two years?

bash the dems all you want, but that approach clearly did help retain votes.

Praising accomplishments helps solidify an incumbent’s electoral success. But what are those accomplishments??????

    • Mr. Davis, The Vermont House AND Senate were D/P majority last biennium. They did not have a veto proof majority and did have to compromise with phil scott. If you paid property taxes in 2026, phil scott saw to it you paid less than the D/P majority wanted you to pay. Vermont will in this biennium have a veto-proof super-majority. As these legislators re-conviene in January, let’s see what they accomplish on what was allegedly the #1 voter concern- Affordability.

    • I should have said the republican house members led by Scott.

Regardless, when the coalition’s primary accomplishments over the last two years focused on rolling back or blocking major policies from previous session, I don’t see much of a compromise by any of the parties involved. It’s unfortunate.

Scott has floundered time and time again when it comes to preemptive bargaining and fails to offer reasonable compromise in any timely manor. Over and over it’s his way or the highway.

Scott is the elected leader of this state and its residents. Unfortunately he’s proven to be a real world race car driver that’s spending his time as governor in the passenger seat.

  2. This reminds me of the “six pack” – first-time, “common sense” Republican legislators who were elected following the passage of civil unions. Most of them were also voted out after one term. It turns out that legislating is hard – very few issues lend themselves to the simple-minded, knee-jerk responses often espoused in comments on this site. If Vermont voters were simply following the “national Democratic bandwagon” – they would have voted for Janoo.

  3. The only reason you paid less property taxes last year was they stole the money from other funds. Comment from Richard Day.

  4. There should have been a Reagan sweep of the country. The Reps didn’t get the word about about Socialism and how it would affect American life. Thy are constantly asleep at he wheel. Dems are a constant lie and had Liberal media to get their word out, Reps didn’t. Dems rejected Obama and Biden, now they want the same. Dems are organized, Reps are not and never have been. People have short memories.

As Ben Franklin quoted “America is a Republic, if You can keep it”

  5. Writer Andy Frisella summed elections up. If only Charlie Kirk’s crusade for individual critical thinking had prevailed before Nov 3.

“Because the strength of a country is ultimately a reflection of the character, discipline and standards of the people who make it up. That’s you. Politics is downstream of culture. We can keep changing the people in charge, passing new laws and arguing over which party has the answers … but until we change the culture fostering, producing and tolerating the problems we have as a society, nothing fundamentally changes.

“A population of weak, unhealthy, uninformed and dependent people is a hell of a lot easier to control than a population of strong, healthy, educated and self-reliant people. Your responsibility is to become the exact opposite of everything they want for you to the best of your abilities. Your REAL best. In my opinion that’s our obligation as Americans.

“A culture of personal excellence is the foundation of a great country. There is no election, politician, policy or law that can substitute for that … and the best thing about that is the same behaviors that make you a better American also make your own life better quickly. If we want a better America … It starts with better Americans. There is no other way. Personal excellence is the Ultimate Rebellion.”

    • You speak much truth! We used to educate our populace about America and what it means to be American, along with our form of governance.

Instead we now indoctrinate our children and bring up the youth to be Marxist, socialist and blame all your problems on somebody lease because they earn more money.

We teach envy and say that is healthy. We teach them lust and tell them it is love. We teach about power and money and how to be corrupt and wasteful in the name of self improvement and personal enrichment!

We teach people to believe propaganda and everything on their “smart phone” is true, we do not teach discernment, and like you state, it is our down fall.

The primary driver of subverting a country is to take over education and educate an entire generation on a new way of thinking.

      You speak the truth.
