Rutland County State Senator Terry Williams was charged with domestic assault yesterday, state police say.

Williams, first elected to the Senate in 2022, is a Republican seeking re-election along with incumbent Republicans David Weeks and Brian Collamore. The three Republicans now holding all three Rutland County senate seats are challenged in the November 3 general election by independent David Wolk, a former Democrat state senator.

At about 5:40 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, troopers from the Vermont State Police Rutland Barracks received a report that a domestic assault had taken place in Poultney.

VSP’s investigation developed probable cause to conclude that Williams, 74, of Poultney had caused pain and injury to a household member one day earlier, Monday, Oct. 26.

Williams, who is listed as divorced in his legislative biography, was taken into custody and transported to the Rutland Barracks for processing. At the conclusion of processing, Williams was jailed at Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility on $500 bail.

He is scheduled to be arraigned at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in Rutland.

The arrest was flagged by Senate Republican Leader Scott Beck in a press release this morning: “Vermont Senate Republicans are aware of the Vermont State Police Incident Report that was released this morning regarding Senator Terry Williams.
We are not aware of any details beyond the VSP report and will make no comment at this time. Expect an additional press statement later this afternoon, after the arraignment hearing.”
