VSP says house leveled after propane leak explosion

An Essex Junction mother and her son have been identified as the people that died in a weekend gas explosion in the remote town of Granville in Addison County.

Sarah O’Sullivan, 46, and her son, Liam O’Sullivan, 20, both of Essex Junction died from blast-related injuries, Vermont State Police said.  Autopsies were completed on Sunday.

Police had said earlier the man had died at the scene and the woman died at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.

Sarah O’Sullivan and her son, Liam, were featured on NBC5 in South Burlington in March for their participation in the Special Olympics Vermont Penguin Plunge in Lake Champlain.   

The cause of the explosion was a propane leak within the home on Connecticut Trail, off Post Office Hill Road, the Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit reported. 

Meanwhile, Shiela Hammond, 69, of Granville remains hospitalized in critical condition and is receiving care out of state, police said.

One other family member and a friend sustained minor injuries, according to State Police Detective Lt. Dan Hall, the Southern Watch Commander for the holiday weekend.

The single-story home was leveled by the blast, Hall said.
