Vermont Republican Party Chair Paul Dame is urging Sen. Bernie Sanders to explain or retract his endorsement of Maine U.S. Senate candidate Graham Planter after reports surfaced about Planter’s Nazi tattoo.

Planter is running in the Democratic primary in the 2026 United States Senate election in Maine, seeking to unseat Republican Susan Collins. Gov. Janet Mills is the frontrunner for the Democrat nomination.

Axios reported Tuesday that Planter, already under scrutiny for controversial Reddit comments offensive to blacks and sexual assault victims, has faced new criticism after acknowledging the tattoo, which he said dates back nearly two decades. While some Democrats have withdrawn their support, Sanders has reportedly continued to back Planter’s campaign.

“Senator Sanders owes his followers an apology, an explanation or a retraction of his public endorsement of Graham Planter for U.S. Senate in Maine,” Dame said in a statement released Tuesday. “While Mr. Planter claims that he is ‘not a secret Nazi,’ many questions remain about why Planter did not remove the Nazi tattoo that he has worn for 19 years.”

Online sources say that Platner recently disclosed that he has a skull-and-crossbones ‘totenkopf’ tattoo associated with Nazi symbolism, which he, while serving in the U.S. Marines, got while drunk on leave in Croatia in 2007. The tattoo on his chest appears in several photos seen on the internet. He claims he was unaware of its meaning at the time and has faced scrutiny over this revelation during his campaign.

Dame cited EMILY’s List President Jessica Mackler’s characterization of Planter’s comments as “unacceptable and disqualifying,” and called on Sanders to clarify his stance.

“Senator Sanders must address these several issues and state publicly whether he will continue to support the problematic Planter, or whether he will join other Democrats in calling for him to step out of the race,” Dame said.

  1. Bernie spends more time working for Democrats and communists in other States than he does working for Vermonters. He is definitely a King wannabe! Plus he has no idea of the United States history, repeatedly calling our form of Government a ‘Democracy’ when we are Republic, and over the weekend commended President Abraham Lincoln was a Democrat, when in fact he was the very first Republican President elected from the newly formed anti Slavery Republican Party.

  2. SKULL AND BONES. Now name the former presidents that were members of this group????? Comment from Richard Day. Did Bernie ever join the left eye black eye club????

    • Wait, Bernie who? Does he still have something to do with VT? Isn’t he that NYer who is “fighting the man” with AOC on their private jet adventures?

  3. This shows you how far down the tubes this country has gone. Comment from Richard Day. Try doing some research on my other post on this site.

  4. While I draw the line at advocating for any democrat (besides John Fetterman) these days, how is a skull and crossbones tat supposed to be definitive evidence of being a nazi? The entire country delights in displaying skeletal symbols around our homes and retail storefronts for at least 2 months prior to the end of October every year. There can’t be that many nazis in America, can there? On the other hand, a republican displaying an American Flag or a coiled up snake is considered by leftists to be a nazi, fascist, hitler etc. Anything that takes up Bernie’s time and puts his sensibilities and hypocrisies in the spotlight is entertaining.

  5. Since the Nazi’s were Socialists and Bernie is a Socialist does this mean that Bernie is a Jewish Nazi?

    • Bernie would insist that we all learn the difference between a “democratic socialist” which he claims to be and a “national socialist” (nazi). Also, somehow we are led to believe by the radical left that our President is a nazi, even though he just got back from arranging relative peace in Israel/Gaza and has a daughter who converted to Judaism and gave him a Jewish granddaughter.

    • Rich, what we have learned is that Democratic Socialists, Progressives, National Socialists, they can call themselves what they want they are all COMMUNISTS to me.

  6. Now remember, after you study the SKULL AND BONES CLUB go and find the members of the LEFT EYE BLACK EYE CLUB and many of the same people are listed. Comment from Richard Day.

  7. Now I want to see all of the people who said that Sam Douglass was assumed guilty too quickly to chime in. The Dems are good at supporting their members regardless of what they do. Is the Right going to fall into the same trap? If we are to maintain even the smallest semblance of integrity, we have to apply the same standard to everyone.
