Campaigning legislator narrowly avoided traffic accident

Rep. Mike Morgan campaigns on roadside of Rte. 2

 By Michael Bielawski

A member of the Vermont House of Legislature says that his truck wheels came unbolted after being tampered with.

This message was posted October 24 on Facebook by Rep. Michael Morgan, R- West Milton/Grand Isle.

“As most of you know I travel the area a lot. Sadly, it is apparent that someone ‘tampered’ with my truck in those travels. As a result, last night, I experienced a catastrophic failure with my vehicle,” he wrote.

He asks if someone saw or heard anything.

“If anyone has seen any suspicious activity involving my truck I would appreciate you reaching out to me. I have notified local authorities. I am glad that my wife, children or grandchildren were not with me in the vehicle as greater harm could have occurred.”

In a phone interview with VDC on Mondayhe elaborated that at least four mechanics having heard the story generally told him “That’s just a little bit more than suspicious.”

He dismissed any possibility that the tires weren’t put on right. “That would have presented itself a long time ago,” he said. “I had those replaced back in May or April, then drove a camper to Tenessee about 1,100 miles.” He added that altogether he drove six or seven thousand miles since they were put on.

Eight heavy-duty lug nuts simultaneously came off. Morgan said it’s not uncommon for an occasional single bolt to loosen, but for all eight at once is unusual.

“It just doesn’t add up,” he said.

He spoke with state and local police in Milton. He campaigns over a large area – his district is about 60 miles long – so that’s a lot of stops in rural settings with opportunities for someone to be alone with the truck.

He noted the costs for a new wheel and other parts and labor have totaled almost $2,800.

When the wheel did come off, he heard a large screeching noise and was able to pull off the road just in time. He said just a small piece of one remaining bolt was the difference between it coming off completely while still in traffic.

He said he hadn’t heard back from police and it may be unlikely at this point that they learn more.

After two assassination attempts against Trump this year, there is more discussion in the media about political violence. The National Review wrote about a week ago, “House Speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) released a statement Friday denouncing Harris for calling Trump a “fascist” during her CNN town hall Wednesday night and suggesting her rhetoric could encourage political violence.”

Regarding the potential penalties for tampering with a vehicle, Cornell Law School summarizes 18 U.S. Code § 1365 – “Tampering with consumer products.”

It states, “Whoever, with reckless disregard for the risk that another person will be placed in danger of death or bodily injury and under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to such risk, tampers with any consumer product that affects interstate or foreign commerce, or the labeling of, or container for, any such product, or attempts to do so, shall—” It continues that an offender can spend up to 10 years in prison.”

  1. A dangerous prank by a very low IQ savage that should not be allowed to walk freely among us.

    • Just look for someone walking on his nuckles and wearing a Harris-Walz T-shirt.

  2. still trying to figure out how they allowed a sniper on a roof 140 yards from Donald Trump.

  3. We must remember that if this act of very consequential sabotage was politically motivated against a Republican, then the perpetrator was likely a creature of the left. It is therefore completely justified by their rules of who holds the moral high ground.
If a conservative utters a verbal statement that makes a liberal feel bad, that is an assault, equivalent to a 2 by 4 to the head. If a liberal removes the lug nuts of a conservative’s truck, that is an acceptable act of free expression.

  4. I would say that I hope the person is caught, but we all know how that would turn out. The cops will spend time investigating, make an arrest and the suspect is sent through the judicial revolving door after promising to behave. I am thankful that Mr. Morgan wasn’t hurt (or worse) and that none of his family members were in the vehicle. It is just so very sad to see what Vermont is becoming.

  5. Let us all pray for the safety of our Republican candidates and in particular Representative Michael Morgan! It is unbelieveable this act was done to him but sadly it does not suprise me knowing how the other side operates.

  6. Every state has a law on the books allowing for the use of deadly force if you catch someone in the act of arson to an occupied structure. I would put catching someone loosening your lugnuts in the same category, but that’s just my opinion, and I didn’t learn that by watching Perry Mason…

    • That is not a proper use of deadly force in and of itself, but if you confronted them while they had a heavy breaker bar in their hand capable of causing great bodily harm, and they proceeded to threaten you with that tool, deadly force would likely be justified. My opinion, not legal advise.

    • Well, if it’s not OK to actually shoot the guy, you could rough him up a bit and make him wish you had.

  7. If former President Trump is elected to a new term, there will likely be more examples of monkey wrenching, even more overt terrorist action, by Leftists. How will our elected officials, law enforcement authorities, and the judiciary respond?

  8. If I’m not mistaken, loosening the lug nuts on Mr Morgan’s vehicle can rightly be considered attempted murder. It will be interesting, and telling, what the charge against this cretin will be, when caught, from a Vermont District Attorney. We’ll see if they take this seriously. Glad you weren’t injured, Mike. You’re not in Skopje any more…
    The Right Mark

    • I’m guessing Sarah George might go as far as Practicing Vehicle Maintenance Without a Permit,” and then drop the charges if the sabateur pays for a permit.

    • @Mark
      I agree, attempted murder.
      >>>”It will be interesting, and telling, what the charge against this cretin…”<<<
Yes, again I agree. However, what I find MORE interesting is why this candidate gets all kinds of news coverage yet an Independent candidate for Vt Governor was brushed aside.
No news coverage, no police investigation, nothing. As if HE were nothing. On SEPARATE
occasions he had his break lines cut, tires slashed, and other dangerous and threatening measures. WHY? Sounds odd, no?

  9. Do you think they are boarding up the businesses in New York and Washington or anywhere else for that matter to stop the rioting MAGA Trump supporters if we lose?
Violence is what communists are trained to do.

    • It’s what they did after the 2016 election, and you never see
that brought up by the commiecrat media…

  10. Part and parcel of the mind control tactics manifesting violent acts without provocation. Many, many decades ago, my grandfather was run off the road driving late one night – he was targetted for being one of two vocal Democrats in a Republican town during selection season. I wonder what he would say now seeing the gnashing of teeth and MSM inciting political violence? I’m sure it would be full of expletives and condemnation. My mother always warned “the blood will run in the streets.” She wasn’t incorrect seeing the violence unfolding across the nation, let alone our own State. She saw the rot and the pure evil on both sides of the political aisles – the puppets dance for their Master while the sheep follow false prophets and worship false idols – all by design.

  11. Well here we go again on the VDC comment section there are TWO Tom’s that VDC has allowed. I emailed Guy Page about it and got a response, but no correction. Tom’s ,not me wrote comments that were responded to negatively, I don’t get negatives, mostly agreements. This younger Tom is from Burlington, I’m from So. Vermont. I’m changing my title to Tom C as herein noted. Apparently there’s no other way to separate the two Toms. Hope it doesn’t happen to others and trust my title TOM C is legit to the web site. Our email addresses should NOT be the same.

  12. Back before I came to my senses, and was tight with the commies, I knew a few psychopaths who would feel perfectly justified doing that. It could have been done with the intent to kill or maim Mr. Morgan, or to scare him into getting in line. Yes, the Petite Khmer Rouge here in VT are a deranged lot, and the dims and faux-gressives are happy to give them free rein.
    I’m glad that you’re okay.
Side note: I remember a time when the Italian toughs who ran Brooklyn all had bumper stickers that said, “You toucha my car, I breaka you face.” They could leave their cars unlocked.

  13. It’s worse than a prank – it’s reckless disregard for human life – but why not get some more information before you start making wild accusations – this is a good time to take a deep breath and keep the knee-jerk reactions in check – both parties.
