Who’s running for re-election, and who’s not?

11 senators will be doing something else next January

By Guy Page

92 of the 180 members of the Vermont General Assembly have confirmed they will run for re-election in November, according to an unofficial headcount conducted by Vermont Daily Chronicle

42 legislators are confirmed not seeking re-election to their current seats. 46 are undecided or unknown.

The attrition is highest in the Senate, where 11 of the 30 members – 37% – aren’t seeking another term.

31 House members – just over 20% – aren’t running. However, among them are nine current committee chairs: William Lippert (Health Care), Tim Briglin (Energy & Technology), Sarah Copeland-Hanzas (Government Operations), Maxine Grad (Judiciary), Mary Hooper (Appropriations), Kate Webb (Education), Janet Ancel (Ways & Means), Carolyn Partridge (Agriculture and Forestry), and Ann Pugh (Human Services).

Reasons given by lawmakers include a desire to spend time with young families, running for higher office (marked with an *), pandemic-related fatigue and concern, accomplishment of key goals, redistricting, and the desire to retire while still able to pursue other interests. A VDC report tomorrow will address their reasons why, as well as likely candidates to run for seats they now hold. Legislative candidates for the August party primaries have until next Thursday, May 26 to gather 50 signatures on petitions.

The headcount below is based on personal communications with the lawmakers and/or (in a handful of instances) reliable media reports. This list is subject to announcements and corrections. Lawmakers are encouraged to direct information to news@vermontdailychronicle.com asap. The list will be updated on www.vermontdailychronicle.com as soon as information is received.

  1. Ya know I honestly wish I could say “dam that’s too bad!”, but I can’t. Most, if not all have “served” in Mount Peculiar entirely long enough ! Get a real job ! Of course unless mommy, and daddy happened to leave you a big enough trust fund that you don’t need the money.

    • My ‘take’ is our reps are running scared. The hand of justice is a ‘comin’ full speed ahead via the “Fauci Dossier” ala Dr David Martin, for one. In fact, my county prosecutor yelled at me on the phone–he gets off at doing this to women in particular–that there’s nothing illegal going on. Really?! The job of county prosecutor is to prosecute. Imagine if you were a ‘hired gun’ and shot a bunch of ‘blanks’.

  2. Great newsand extremely good riddance. This bunch has done enormous harm to Vermont, its people. Just hoping what we get next is not worse i.e. further woke, even more self-centered and clueless.
