Newport man dies in Barton crash

A 16-year-old boy died after being ejected in a single vehicle crash Sunday morning in Berkshire. 

Shortly before 1 AM, state police were dispatched to a single-car crash on Water Tower Road. First responders found a Toyota Tundra off the southbound shoulder near the Rte. 105 intersection. The operator and sole occupant of the vehicle was Carson Smith, 16, of Berkshire.

Police say Smith was traveling north on Water Tower Road. After cresting a slight hilltop, he began losing control, and overcorrected his steering. 

The truck began traveling nearly broadside, leaving the roadway and overturned several times. While overturning the operator became ejected.

Fatal truck crash in Barton – a utility truck crashed into the wooded median near mile marker 154 on I-91 in Barton 9:26 pm, Saturday, June 17, causing the death of the driver.

The operator and sole occupant of the truck was identified as Derick Ward, 39, of Newport. Ward was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck was found in the median.
