The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced last week that the Ryegate (Caledonia County) Biomass Power Plant will use a $1 million federal energy grant to install a Waste Heat Recovery module, which will capture organic waste heat from wood biomass to generate new energy. This project is valued at $1,892,676, the Monday, October 7 Journal-Opinion reports.

The announcement came just a couple of days after the project received its Act 250, or land use, permit from the Vermont Natural Resources Board.

“This permit specifically authorizes recovery of heat from the Ryegate Biomass Power Station for wood chip drying, and wood pellet manufacture. The project includes construction of roads; a scale; truck dumper; moving floor sorters; wet milling line; drying island; storage; truck loading; two pellet boxes; a bagging line; and a stormwater treatment system. The project will support production of ± 90,000 tons of wood pellets annually by up to 5 employees and may include sale of dry wood chips.”

The facility will be developed adjacent to the biomass plant in East Ryegate.

The pellet project has been designed in response to a 2022 state law which requires the plant operators to increase efficiency by 50%.

Earlier this year, the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation issued an air pollution control permit (draft available at link) for the project.
