TROY – At least three people have been arrested on drug-related charges in connection with the investigation into the fatal shooting of an Orleans County woman, whose body was found in Troy on Tuesday, officials said.
Investigation showed Kayla Wright, 29, of Derby, was shot multiple times, and at least one shot struck her in the head, killing her.
The death was ruled a homicide by the office of the Vermont’s Chief Medical Examiner on Wednesday afternoon, Vermont State Police said.
Jakiy Tramaine-Corey Keith, 24, will appear in U.S. District Court in Burlington for an initial hearing at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, records show.
He was lodged at the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans about 6:45 a.m. Wednesday.
Thomas P. Rooney, 34, of Troy, was lodged at the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans about 2:50 p.m., but it was unclear when he would appear in court.
Bryanna F. Rooney, 29, of Troy, was lodged at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington about 3:30 p.m., but no record indicated when she would appear in court.
Wright, who comes from a well-known local family, had last been seen in Troy early Friday, state police said.
State police received a call about 1 p.m. Tuesday from a member of the public who reported having discovered a possible human body inside a large container on a sand bar in the Missisquoi River. It was in the area of Big Falls of Missisquoi State Park on River Road, police said.
The investigation into the suspicious death continued through the night after the body was found. Investigators conducted interviews with people who might have relevant information.
Multiple law enforcement agencies later executed a court-ordered search warrant on Wednesday at a home on Vermont 100 in Troy, where the Rooneys have been living.
State police said they were looking for evidence that could be connected to the homicide.
VSP said Wednesday evening it did not have anybody in custody on homicide charges, but the Department of Corrections reported at least three were jailed from Troy on Wednesday.
U.S. Homeland Security Investigations is the lead investigative agency in the drug case with primary assistance from the Vermont Drug Task Force and Vermont State Police.
The Orleans County Sheriff’s Department and Newport City Police also have been providing help.

another day at the vermont zoo/// population reduction moving ahead at a faster pace///
One has to ask themselves when the last time something like this happened in VT?
In my recollection (which may be wrong) not that I can recall. Certainly not before the gun restrictions have been put in place… So how are those working Gov Scott, Baruth, LaLonde? Let me guess you will now use this to justify taking more rights away?
RIP Kayla.
Good Lord, help us.
Who could have ever seen this coming to Vermont of all places??
Why your overlords in Montpelier did! That’s who!!
You chose a socialist & atheist for your US Senator, completely disregarding the world’s warning that socialism is but just another name for Communism.
You allowed your children’s soccer games & your vacations to ME to thoroughly interfere with your civic duty to engage with & carefully scrutinize the public servants you sent to Montpelier.
You chose to “party-line” vote despite knowing the dangerous & deadly consequences such folly can give rise to – having been taught all about the Third Reich and the former USSR, & the calamities Communism still spawns in modern-day Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea and Communist China!
You refuse to see or simply don’t care enough to know that your free press has been replaced by government-sponsored propagandized mass media as you continue completely unaware & uninformed about the nefarious traitors to the flag whom you have seated in your Capital.
Despite all the secular & worldly values you submit to, you likely still retain familiarity with the Biblical verse “You reap what you sow”. And indeed, you have.
Good Lord, help us. They know not what they do.
I am in total agreement.
Well said Kathleen. The work these thugs are doing is but a tip of the iceberg if we do not get a grip on reality and put the legislators who by default are supporting these thugs, out of office and get common sense and good judgement people in charge, including the governor, we are doomed. Many of the people who we would be relying on to help with these policies and actions, have moved out of state? Can anyone blame them?
You are absolutely correct. This drug trafficking we are seeing is just the tip of the iceberg. What is most upsetting is when citizens call and report to law enforcement information about drug trafficking and they do nothing about it but give lip service.
RIP young lady and condolances to the family,in all due respect
As to the progressives (Regressives!) and the left, in the State of Vermont, I lay this murder right at your door, due to naive woke policies.
This would have never have happened if the left did not tie law enforcement hands long ago.
I think we can predict more of this if the two state financed “drive up opium dens” open. Instead of recovery, it will enable more self destructive behavior and provide an easy to find, ready made clientele for the pushers. Build it and they will come. And the police will have their hands tied. How can anyone think promoting drug abuse will save lives?
Young women getting shot in the head in small young Vermont, is the new normal unless leaders start doing their jobs.
Small town Vermont sorry.
The Governor was quick & decisive about closing the Gym in Rutland during “covid”
How about all this? Every two weeks it seems another Vermonter is killed in a drug deal gone bad, what gives?
Anyone want to bet, we don’t see this on Vermont Digger, 7 days or open discussion on Front Porch Forum?
This is an incredibly terrible event that one might expect in a TV show like the Sopranos. Shooting a young woman in the head, forcing her body into a barrel, and setting her adrift in a river is impossible for me to imagine, but it happened in Vermont. Horrendous events usually limited to big city gangs are moving into our, at one time considered, safest state in the country, must be addressed by our legislature, states attorneys, and judges
Soft on crime, pay the penalty!
To all the self-hating white, middle-class, liberal flatlanders who have always felt that Vermont needs to grow up and experience the woes and burdens of the real world and of course to celebrate diversity, you wanted it…you got it. Your leftist policies have brought Holyoke, Hartford and Brooklyn to small town Vermont. Are you proud of yourselves for ruining this once-beautiful corner of New England. Saw a good bumper sticker in Maine recently: “Go back to the state you ruined”…
I’m originally from NY myself, and I couldn’t agree more and would love to sport a bumper sticker like that myself! I really don’t like the “us against them” mentality as we should all be citizens of this once beautiful & enviable Union, nevertheless in cases like this state’s pathetic voting record since the 1980’s, it is deserved. Needless to say, the naivety of all the college kids’ voting here doesn’t help the cause either.
Of course, not all people who relocate from state-to-state (including many Vermonters who themselves leave this once safe, gorgeous state for what they think are greener pastures) are bad apples, but obviously many are.
They love their liberal politics, can’t stand what they eventually yield, and then they move & begin to build the same path to perdition elsewhere.
What would likely help is somehow not permitting anyone who hasn’t resided in VT full time for a period of minimally five years to run for elective office. Of course, that’s likely unconstitutional, but it would keep true carpetbaggers & troublemakers out.
There is a website where you can have your own bumper stickers made:
stickermule.com
This is very sad and very disheartening. I wish I could make more comments but there would be to much foul language used…..
Our refreshing green mountain air now permeated with the stench of death all around. As our elected officials conspire to steal every last dime in our pockets, the dead bodies are stacking like wood. Had enough yet?
But few are aware. The DNC-sponsored news media in VT largely refuses to report it & when they very occasionally do, they omit and/or misrepresent the facts & the populace remain ignorant & unaware.
The GOP SHOULD be mailing out fliers statewide using photos & easy to read captions that capture the vile goings-on created & supported by democrat/”progressive”/”democrat-socialist lawmakers in this state. BANNERS, HEADLINERS, PICS, CAPTIONS and FACTS!
But they never shall. They continue to attempt to “play nice” with a highly organized gang of ruthless enemy combatants. Great job as always, VT GOP!!!!!!!!!
So sad. To not give a damn about another human beings LIFE over drug money. Paper. Useless paper, chosen over a beating heart of another and pain brought to innocent others.
RIP Young lady. My condolences to her family.
When was the last time all critics of the GOP donated to them? We need people to stop complaining and step up and run for office. And they don’t “play nice.” They mostly vote against all of the cockamamie bs the dem and progs come up with. There just aren’t enough of them and when they do run they could use some support.
What’s gov Scott have to say to Massachusetts right now? I’d hope he asks them how’d they enjoy Vermont residents terrorizing MA residents the way they’re here in Vermont.
Bullet holes in the head over drug money. Tossed in a toolbox. Down river.
