Woman dies in snowmobile crash

A 50-year-old Proctorsville woman was killed Friday afternoon in a snowmobile crash on a VAST trail in Brighton, Vermont State Police said.

Troopers responded at about 12:55 p.m. to VAST Trail 2001 near Meadow Street for a report of a serious crash. Police identified the operator as Laurie Jackson, 50, of Proctorsville.

Investigators said Jackson was traveling north on the trail when she failed to negotiate a left-hand turn, went off the right side of the trail and struck a group of trees. The 2021 Skidoo Renegade snowmobile sustained heavy front-end damage.

Jackson, who was wearing a helmet, was transported by Newport EMS to North Country Hospital in Newport, where she later died despite life-saving measures.
Brighton Fire Department and the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
