Maryann Manning, 63, of Wolcott, pleaded guilty Thursday, June 20 in United States District Court in Burlington to fraudulently converting tens of thousands of dollars in Social Security benefit payments. Chief U.S. District Judge Geoffrey W. Crawford released Manning on conditions pending sentencing.
On May 13, the U.S. Attorney filed a one-count information charging Manning with receiving stolen government money. Manning made her initial appearance in federal court today and pleaded guilty to that charge.
According to court records, Manning’s brother received disability insurance benefit payments from the Social Security Administration (SSA). Manning’s brother died in October 2015 at which time his SSA benefits should have terminated. Following his death, however, Manning collected her brother’s benefits from SSA by withdrawing the money from his accounts. The total loss to the Social Security Administration is more than $119,000.
Manning faces up to ten years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $250,000. The actual sentence, however, would be determined by the Court with guidance from the advisory United States Sentencing Guidelines and the statutory sentencing factors.
This case was investigated by the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General.

The government takes advantage of its people in every way shape and form This lady grabs money that was being put into an account that she had access to and it’s her fault? I can see having to pay it back but to be threatened with jail time. Ridiculous.
What about the person responsible for not terminating her brothers benefits? Does that person get 10 years in jail? I mean they were fraudulently distributing the peoples tax money…
Who can blame her? When the citizenry see how their elected officials help themselves with their noses in the public trough, they just assume that all public money is free for the taking.
The money IS free for the taking as long as you’re an illegal alien, criminal, or member of some leftist group. In this case, she must just be a somewhat average citizen suffering under this new banana republic & she must pay.
She did wrong, sorry, but just because democrats steal, does not make it right. Like the thieving politicians the democrats elect, she actually is stealing from me.
The question I’d ask her is “was he still on the voter lists?”..Remember — if the dead can vote then so should you..SM.
