Senators from four New England states, including Vermont Sen. Peter Welch, want to increase funding for the Silvio O. Conte National Wildlife Refuge to conserve new lands in the Connecticut River watershed.
“U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Refuge staff, in partnership with the Connecticut River Watershed Partnership, have identified approximately 24,000 acres of priority land conservation project opportunities in fiscal years 2025 and 2026 within the Conte Refuge, valued at more than $51 million,” wrote the senators. “This unmet need underscores our call for robust funding to support critical projects in this region,” the Senators wrote.”
Earlier this year, the refuge purchased its first property as part of the new Ompompanoosuc Division near Lake Fairlee. The Journal Opinion had a story in our Oct. 9 edition about the planned local expansion in Fairlee, Vershire, West Fairlee, and, possibly, in Bradford and Thetford as well.
The northern Vermont Nulhegan Basin section of the multi-state Conte Wildlife Refuge allows hunting, but subject to these state and federal conditions.

Typical for Leftist Welch of Vermont to proceed “as usual” looking for Federal Monies as Trump’s aim is to reduce Federal Spending and Waste.
It’s very embarrassing to listen those who are Elected in Vermont always looking to Federal Monies to pay for their actions. They also measure the success of our Senate and Congress Representatives by how much Federal Monies they can get and bring to the State of Vermont.
How about if Vermont learns to live within the State of Vermont’s Means? Of course this would mean any changes to invite businesses to exist in Vermont.
Are they economically illiterate or just living in fantasy while ignoring that ALL the monies governments spend come from tax monies paid by “The People?”
You would think with the size of the Federal Deficit they would STOP SPENDING! I know ………… TOO MUCH COMMON SENSE!
One can Hope for change ………..
No more increase in the Conte Refuge as this is a massive misuse of money.
This has become a large land holding operation. Agenda 2030.
Is this the thing were they build random man made wooden structures throughout what was previously a perfectly good natural habitat, give lands to the federal government where you can’t carry your firearm “legally”, poison the water supply so certain plants don’t grow, release experimental bill gates GMO mosquitos, and put up lots of expensive signage? Shouldn’t conserving cost nothing, you just leave it alone, maybe make some fire breaks?
Conn serving…
Removing 24,000 acres from the Vermont Property Tax base will most certainly have taxation consequences for the involved towns (not named in article) . So, the FEDs will spend 51 million of taxpayers money to certain landowners (not named in article). Most of the subject land may be remote timberland and probably not subject to development pressure. I’ll bet there are better places to spend the 51 million or, better yet, apply it to the education tax bill or return it to Vermont taxpayers. How much annual property tax revenue will be lost by having the FEDs own it?
Another Massachusetts intellectual midget who wasn’t tall enough to ride the ride, wants to assist three other governors in helping to perform more regulatory extortion
If it is to be preserved, let the states decide, and do the preserving, and keep the jobs, and tax base, in state, where it will do the most good, for the taxpayer, and Mr.Welch, is it your intent to make a lifetime venture, to lord over us, the people ,who the likes of, the progressives in elective office, tend to look at, as their servants?
How about you step aside for some new and fresh blood, look at the mess you guys have left the country, and state…shame on you, enough is enough, make room for young ideas, and a younger crowd, as we are not the House of Lords ,political office for life!!!
We fought the Brits twice to throw off that yoke and the likes of you are trying to yoke us up again.
Step down and let citizens take their turn to govern, and not some so called progressive, ruling over us all ,for life, until their teeth fall out and leaving they who they lord over, a broken mess.
Go…please go, if you have any self respect left…do the right thing and hit to road Jack, and don’t you come back no more, no more.
We had enough!
The electric companies are also looking for homeowners to share their electric back to the grid and for renters and such (who cannot install solar panels) to invest into 10 and 20 year plans (for which the electric company also offers loans to those consumers while kicking back their “trickle-down” windfall — if there is any).
Vermont doesn’t even know how to sell a snow shovel in January if it weren’t for Walmart muscling their way into a couple towns.
I came here to hide from commies behind enemy lines. I picked the biggest enemy line in America. It’s definitely quite a show. Everything my grandparents told me about the Soviet Bloc states. Every sofa king thing they told me!!
Sorry, but I just don’t trust the Feds when it comes to managing lands. They are apt to say one thing, and then after acquiring the land they want to bend, or give in to lefty fruitcakes. The Nulhegan section of the Conti is a prime example. The Feds bought it from Champion Paper Co. and stated that the hunting regs. would be determined by the regs. that the rest of the state are determined to be. A couple of years ago, after extensive negotiations, and sportsmen thought that their agreement was settled, they walked away from the table, and changed language to give concessions to antis, and changed hunting and trapping regs on the Conti. Don’t trust them !
The million dollar woodcock breeding area on the Stone Dam Road was a massive waist of money as no woodcocks showed up to breed.
Mr. Welch. STOP SPENDING MONEY!
Vermont’s DC delegation all they know is we need more Money, Money Money !!
But they’ll support funding the Ukraine Slush Fund @ $180 Billion…………
