Welch: DeJoy is failing rural communities

Folks across Vermont have told me about how frustrated they are with the national management of the U.S. Postal Service.

Slow mail is causing massive problems in rural communities. I hear stories of prescriptions that expire by the time they arrive, Social Security checks coming late, and concerns about getting legal documents like passports on time.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: national postal leadership is failing our rural communities. That’s why I’m calling on President Biden to swiftly nominate candidates to fill upcoming vacancies on the USPS Board of Governors who will fight for our rural communities and hold Postmaster Louis DeJoy accountable.

We need strong leadership at the highest level of the USPS, because our rural towns are getting the short end of the stick. Meanwhile, our postal workers are trying to keep up with more demand and more difficult working conditions.

Vermont’s capital city is a frustrating example of the mismanagement. Just a few weeks ago, I visited the mobile post office in Montpelier and saw the terrible conditions workers faced.

The temporary postal trucks they were using didn’t have enough space to store all the mail, there were no lights for when it gets dark, and no heating for when it gets cold. That’s unacceptable.

Now the temporary trucks are gone and the capital of our state doesn’t have a retail post office. The state of Vermont has even offered temporary space for a post office in Montpelier, but the USPS apparently “isn’t interested” in taking their help.

People need to get their mail on time, especially in rural areas where folks rely on it for the products they need. I’m going to keep pressing the USPS to make sure they’re giving both rural communities and postal workers a fair shake.

I’m hopeful the Biden Administration will prioritize nominees who will hold DeJoy accountable and meet the needs of rural America

  1. of course all the dems hate Dejoy, appointed by Trump I think, my neighbor, we’ll just call him Larry was the postmaster for my town for many years, he ran it all by himself. I asked him what the problem was today, his reply was, “lazy”. Reality hurts don’t it.

    • ??????? Doubtful, since the only native Vermonters are Indians with virtually no European ancestry in their DNA. Ask her what tribe she hails from.

  2. One post carrier (a republican who is not lazy) said she quit because she was tired of the long rural drives delivering Amazon packages. She was a postal worker for many years and with the Amazon contracts she found that she was over worked and under paid.

I leave a big tip $ for the letter carrier in my mailbox for Christmas… (don’t get any ideas, she already picked it up.) Remember your letter carrier for the Holidays!

  3. If someone’s prescription expired because of a delay at the post office, that would be about a year or more. So…. pull the other leg, it plays jingle bells.
Pharmacies are prohibited from giving medications that will expire in less time that the prescription is for….so since antibiotics are typically, the shortest duration of medications, that would be approximately 10 days. Highly likely that the portion of Mr. Welch’s examples that states prescriptions expired due to postal delay is partial truth and questionable. But we all know pharmacies are failing left and right. And it would have been the fault of the pharmacy not necessarily the post office.
But truly, of all the issues going on today, he focus’ on the post office? Oh, because it affects the capital. Because they were making do with what they had due to the flooding. That’s your biggest concern Welch? Well, I guess everyone has to find their passion….
(that was sarcasm for all the literal minded)
I’m not saying our post office isn’t struggling either. But seriously, that is what he wants to write an article about.

  4. Democrats had plenty of opportunity to remove him for contempt of Congress when he lied during hearings. But they (YOU!) chose to do nothing.

  5. Wait a minute while I put my waders on after reading this crock of bull. I don’t beleive for a minute that anyone is getting prescriptions late….that would be a delay of a year or more. The original RX would have been replaced long before then….and as for SS checks? LOL Thats a great joke Sqwelch. LOL “If you are applying for Social Security or Supplemental Security Income benefits, you must elect to receive your benefit payment electronically when you enroll.” IF anyone is getting a live check from SS its not for their monthly benefits. This writeup is just full of lies. And BTW, Welch Montpeculiar isn’t RURAL VERMONT.

  6. My son is a rural carrier with no backup; working 6 days a week. He gets home on average about 6:30. The USPS provides a Mercedes Metris van two wheel drive; useless up in the hills with ice and snow so he still keeps his own 4WD van for winter conditions. They can not get any help. Working for the USPS used to be a sought after job. What has changed? Will Welch be any help? What will getting rid of DeJoy do for the USPS?

  7. More and more, people ship on line or by phone. We us Our logistic systems have not kept upped. WE USED to shop in a store and bring the product home ourselves. Now, somebody’s got to do it and it damn well ain’t you.
UPS and FedEx rely on the USPS to finish deliveries they can’t.
Meanwhile, Louis DeJoy, USPM General, has sabotaged sorting systems, destroying millions of dollars worth of the latest tech. He also has a big stake in XPO, a private carrier.
