Vermont Democratic Senator Peter Welch sparked online debate Monday night with a social media post advocating for gun control measures, declaring that preventable gun violence “doesn’t have to be this way.”
In the X post, which has garnered over 76,000 views and nearly 4,000 replies as of Tuesday morning, Welch writes:
“It doesn’t have to be this way. Ban assault weapons.Require background checks on all gun sales.Mandate secure gun storage. We can save so many lives if Republicans work with us.”
The post quickly drew criticism from conservative users, many of whom argued that the measures would infringe on Second Amendment rights or fail to address crime by terrorists and criminals.
Replies accused Democrats of politicizing tragedy and highlighted existing laws, with some users sharing memes and images mocking the proposals.
Prominent conservative accounts amplified the backlash, including comments suggesting gun laws would not deter determined attackers or referencing international examples like Australia’s gun restrictions.
@amuse a conservative account with 600K plus follows replied “The Australians did…” as a reference to a mass shooting in Australia over the weekend where father and son Muslim terrorists carried out a terrorist mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach, killing 15 people (aged 10 to 87) and injuring dozens more in Australia’s deadliest such incident since 1996.
In 1996, Australians banned automatic and semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, implemented strict licensing requiring a “genuine reason” (excluding self-defense), mandatory registration, and a large buyback program, while allowing regulated ownership of other firearms for purposes like farming or sport shooting.
“All weapons are assault weapons,” writes @rebelrancher in response to Welch. “You already have to do a background check through a licensed FFL. You people keep repeating the dumbest talking points that show you literally have zero knowledge of guns.”
Welch, a longtime advocate for gun safety reform, has previously co-sponsored legislation on universal background checks and assault weapons bans.
The post comes amid ongoing national debates over gun violence, though it did not reference a specific incident.
Also over the weekend, a gunman opened fire during a final exam review session at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, killing two students, Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, an 18-year-old freshman, and Ella Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore, and injuring nine others.
Rumors have emerged that Cook was targeted for being the Vice President of the Brown University College Republicans and actively promoting conservative views on the predominantly liberal campus.

And responsible gun owners do store there weapons, thieves and the mentally ill do not. Combat the real issue, mental illness and leave us law abiding gun owners alone. Welch, our congress critter from the gang-infested bleephole of Springfield Massachusetts is demanding more gun control after 2 horrific events took place where guns are already banned or highly restricted. Ask yourself, Peter…how was it possible that a gun crime took place on a campus that already bans guns? How would extending such a ban nationwide work to reduce gun violence? Both of these tragedies could have been averted or minimized by having more law-abiding citizens carrying.

So, Welch wants an “assault weapons ban? The shooter at Brown used a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and Rhode Island already has an “assault weapons” ban. The shooter in Australia used a bolt action rifle and Australia also has an “assault weapons” ban. All this from a U.S. Senator who doesn’t want to follow the immigration laws of our country already on the books. Sorry Senator we are not that stupid. Brown University was a “gun free zone” so how did the gun get in there? Didn’t the shooter see the little sign with the gun in the red circle with the slash thru it or did he just miss it? A more effective ban would be to prevent Democrats from owning guns. Gun crime would drop by 95% if Democrats would quit shooting everyone!! Almost every school shooter, every trans shooter, and most black gun violence is ALL perpetrated by Democrats.

Stop trying to ban guns. Stop trying to restrict ownership for guns. Guns are not the problem. It’s the people that have them that will use them against other people. You haven’t stopped making cars and people get killed from drunk drivers all the time. You don’t restrict drivers that I’ve had DUIs. We have the right to carry in bare arms by the second amendment. That will never change. Democrats will never be allowed to change that.

Guns are the problem? Maybe it’s the teachers, the news media, the parents, the internet! In France during a Bastille Day celebration 86 people were killed and over 400 injured by a terrorist attack, using a TRUCK, driving over them.
Once again Senator Welch doesn’t disappoint. He must be well connected to Obama and Hillary Clinton, and their hero Alinsky. “Never let a

We are at the close of the deer hunting season in the USA. A low estimate says over 9 million people were in the woods (with rifles) hunting for deer. Nobody was murdered / wounded with all those guns represented in many states.
Welch should spend more research on who these people who are murdering and wounding the Jews, and Christians in the U.S. and around the world. Their belief is following hard after their (so called) holy book called the Koran. The Brown University shooting involved hand guns. Welch is an embarrassment to Vermont and an affront to self reliance.
God bless those killed or injured at Brown and Bondi Beach. We can only hope our leaders come to understand violent acts are committed by violent people. We must protect ourselves from those people and not the tools they use to commit those acts.
Outlawing guns in Australia didn’t prevent this but it no doubt prevented the innocent from protecting themselves. Liberal Australia along with Britain and America have let tens of thousands of potential islamic terrorists into their countries. Now citizens of those countries are paying the deadly price. We hear so much about how many guns are legally owned here in the U.S. Most are owned by collectors who own numerous firearms. Rarely are these involved in crimes and virtually none in mass shootings.
