Regarding the article. Methane fire in a fishing shanty injures three . I think that it probably has to do with the fact that Harriman Res. was a reservoir that was built, but not fully cleared of stumps and other organic material. That material is (has been) rotting, and as it rots it gives off methane. I’d be willing to bet that this is happening on other reservoirs that were built at the same time in the same manner. Reservoirs like Marshfield Dam (Molly’s Falls) Wrightsville, Waterbury Dam Res. are probably cooking of methane like Harriman, but due to the fact that there are few if any shanties (other than the occasional pop up shanties) on these other lakes, this just has not happened with any frequency, so have not been documented .
