When reading about this Barre fire I am reminded how bothered I am at the expense my town, and surrounding towns, incur for “professional fire fighters”. I can’t THINK of a structure fire in Williston for the ten years I’ve been here. Millions upon millions have been spent on the building and equipment. Then, the “fire fighters”. A recent article in the BFP showed several Williston fire fighter salaries of well over 100k. Not to mention the use of the decked out Chevy Tahoe to get groceries and the like. These “fire fighters” retire after twenty years at full pension/benefits due to the hazardous job…..again, NO FIRES. Then we pay and provide for the rest of their lives while taking on new. All of Long Island is covered by VOLUNTEER fire fighters. But nope, here in VT, we spend many millions for the same. On top of that, when there is an actual fire, the crews are so desperate for action, all the surrounding towns go. You might have twenty trucks at a fire, with two actually doing the job and 18 parked down the road. If we must pay (which we shouldn’t) how about ONE or two for Chittenden County? Here is who attended the Barre fire, a total loss btw.
Barre City Fire Department
Barre Town EMS
Barre Town Fire Auxiliary
Berlin Fire Department
Chelsea Fire Department
East Montpelier Fire Department
East Randolph Fire Department
Montpelier Fire Department
Northfield Fire Department
Randolph Center Fire Department
Randolph Village Fire Department
Washington Fire Department
Waterbury Fire Department
But, but, but Long Island = “bad”, because ……well,……it’s not Vermont.
And btw, Nassau County, L.I. the densely populated county of the two extant counties on that island is primarily Republican. But, but, but it is still “bad” because it’s not VT. Nassau Coliseum? Trump and massive crowds? Ring a bell?
Looks like VT isn’t in fact the only place in the UNITED States where people hold conservative values and care enough about their community members enough to volunteer their expertise and services – yet know enough it’s not the “center of the universe”. Probably because it isn’t. And neither is here.
Yet a couple of specific “natives” on VDC loathe them. Maybe try learning from them instead? And learning from the founding fathers too while u r at it. Americans get to live wherever they choose to. Quit ‘ yet whining; grammy was wrong. Though her maple syrup on ice cream was a great idea.
