Below $3 in southern VT and at scattered stations further north

Average gasoline prices in Vermont edged lower this week, falling 1.3 cents to $3.05 per gallon from last week’s average of $3.06, Vermont Business Magazine reports. Prices across the state showed wide variation, with the lowest reported price at $2.59 per gallon and the highest at $3.29, a difference of 70 cents per gallon.

According to Gas Buddy, the lowest price for a gallon of regular gas is $2.59 at Nido’s Citgo station at 77 Main St. in Wilmington. Remarkably this station is full-service, as noted by one September, 2025 appreciative customer on Gas Buddy: “Full service! They even washed the windshield! Friendly staff. Good price and worth the stop!”

The next cheapest prices are followed by stations in Bennington, Ludlow, Manchester and other southern Vermont towns. The lowest price in Northern Vermont is $2.79 at Jimmy Kwik in Newport, which is operated by Rep. Mike Marcotte (R-Coventry).

The cheapest price in Chittenden County is $2.99 at Costco in Colchester. Washington County: Maplewoods in East Barre ($3.09). Rutland County: Citgo in Fair Haven ($2.79).

Nationally, gas prices also continued to decline. The average price across the country dropped 4.0 cents over the past week to $2.75 per gallon. That figure is down 22.6 cents from a month ago and remains 22.4 cents lower than the national average at this time last year.

The gasoline tax in Vermont is currently about 30 cents per gallon when combining the excise and additional taxes. The diesel tax totals 32 cents per gallon. These taxes are primarily used to fund transportation infrastructure projects, including road and bridge maintenance. Vermont ranks about 20th nationally. California leads the nation with a 68.1 cent gasoline tax as of 2024, according to the Tax Foundation. Illinois and Pennsylvania rank second and third.

In Vermont, EVs are charged a consumption tax at the ‘pump’ charging station, however the funds are routed to building more charging infrastructure, not for caring for Vermont roads.

  1. Being we are getting discount sweet crude oil from Venezuela now, I suspect by mid summer 2026, it should hit 2 bucks…next… embargoed crude worldwide.

    Yup!

You can float/steam but you can’t hide.

Thank God we got a in your face NYC real estate guy running things.

By 3rd quarter 2026, the economy should take off, like one of Elon’s rocket ships… to the point any leftists remaining, who didn’t self deport, like George Clooney, will be outcasts from anything resembling political power, for decades to come…mark my words.

Buckle up, grab the popcorn ,it’s going to be the drive in movie viewing of a lifetime.

    Onward Team Trump and supporters!

    Happy New Years!

To those on the left…Happy Old Jeers!

    Onward!

  2. I think we all know why gas prices in Vermont have not decreased like many other states, but can someone explain there is such a discrepancy within the State?

    • Gail, not sure but I think it has to do with being at the end of the regional distribution system. Easier to deliver gasoline and diesel (always by truck, right?) from central distribution centers, presumably in southern NE/NY. Anyone else know?

    • There used to be bulk plants on the waterfront in Burlington, and petroleum products were brought in by the barge load. Forward to Tony Pomerleau, and the ever left marching Burlington City Council. The oil companies left, (were persuaded to leave?) and that means that all petroleum products are trucked in from Portland Maine. It takes a constant resupply effort to keep our area fuel and gas dealers in product when it is trucked in as opposed to being brought in by the barge load ! Yup, the waterfront is prettier, and probably safer from a disastrous fuel accident, but those things come at a premium .

    • While the distance from distribution centers might play into it, ironically the cheapest gas in the NEK is about as far from the distribution centers one can get. I believe it is price gouging as I’ve seen the price go up 6-cents one day while I was in the Cumby’s minimart and no delivery truck there. Several times I have seem the priced drop from Sunday evening to Monday morning. So tell me, how does the price of the gas in the tanks, in the ground, increase while sitting there?

  3. Somehow, somewhere, someway, Trump will get blamed and vilified for gas prices dropping, and the lower prices labeled as “political theatre.”

  4. @ Chris Cos the devaluing of the dollar goes back at least to FDR when he forcibly confiscated legally owned gold, then our own government killed JFK, then pulled the silver backed $5 note that he had introduced, Nixon put the finishing touches on the toilet paper value of our dollar when he ended ANY gold backing of our currency. It’s been a downward spiral since, but hey the precious metals market is amazing right now: last Friday gold topped out at $4540 oz and silver was knocking on the door of $80 oz when it closed at $79.20. Trump has made some noise about introducing gold backed currency, but I doubt it will happen. The Rothchilds would never allow it, they’ll kill to keep the status quo. Just ask Maummar Gadaffi, nobody really bothered with him, until he introduced an independent gold backed currency…then came the downfall, hmmm.🤔

  5. Nido’s in Wilmington also sells non ethanol high test which is great for small air cooled engines, ATV’s, snowmobiles, snowblowers, chainsaws and many others.
